  1. It could have been as early as the late 40s as I was very young but certainly early fifties I'd imagine. In the same programme there were stories about a cowboy called Hank which were told in a somewhat crude aniimated form. Carole
  2. If you want to go back a really long way TV wise who remembers Humphrey Lestock and Mr. Turnip? My father refused to get a TV until 1955 when commercial T.V. first started but my Nan had one as soon as TV began back in the thirties ( not that I was around then!!) Carole
  3. I' m missing Strictly too. Don't fancy the greatest dancer programme, but do enjoy Dancing on ice, having grown up within 10 mins walk of an ice rink I spent a lot of my growing up years faffing about on the ice and my entire social life collapsed when it closed. I used to be fairly proficient at ice dancing - going at least 5 days each week I should have been! Todd Carty heading helplessly down the exit tunnel a few years ago on Dancing on Ice remains the funniest thing I have ever seen on T.V. Carole
  4. My husband has gone down the town to get papers at the moment, however he was crowing about the result of the recent Spurs match ( I'm a Spurs supporter he an Arsenal)c I take very little interest in football and so did not know about this stuffing the Arsenal got - just wait till he returns!!! Carole
  5. According to my husband Christmas isn't Christmas unless he's had at least one meal of cold turkey, pickles and mashed potato. Carole
  6. Spent Christmas Day at my daughter's in North London, it was superb, Turkey crown and all the trimmings. It made a change for us as I usually have the family come to us on Christmas Day - I really enjoy the cooking side of things and it's lovely to have the house full. I also like to give my daughter a break as she runs an internet retail Company that is horse and pony related and is aimed at little girls aged between about 4 and 16 years old and it is manic for several weeks leading up to Christmas ( one day last week she personalised, packed and posted 120 assorted garments So by Christmas Eve, having had about 6 weeks with a similar schedule she was well and truly exhausted. I couldn't do it this year because I had a hip replacement op' in the Autumn and although I have made a good recovery and am walking unaided and without a limp for the first time in years my stamina is not back to full strength and she wouldn't let me do it. Glad to see how many of you enjoyed the holiday too. My very best wishes to everyone for a very happy, healthy New Year. Carole
  7. Received a text last night purporting to be from NHBC telling me my account had been frozen and | needed to click on the link to reactivate it, as I haven't got a NHBC account I don't think I'll worry too much! Carole
  8. Very best wishes to everyone for Christmas and the New Year, I'll be raising a Glass in memory of Iain our dear Broadscot on Christmas Day, still very much missed by us all . Carole
  9. I couldn't agree more Jean, you're spot on. The music quality is superb. Strictly gives me a feeling of regret in that my mum never got to enjoy it. She would have adored it. In her youth she was passionate about ballroom dancing and enjoyed some success in competitive dancing - giving it up to marry my dad who although good wasn't competition standard and was much happier stripping down a car engine than tripping the light fantastic. They used to go to a dance each weekend and I remember when the band struck up a tango my mum and my father-in-law would get up and as they danced the other dancers would gradually go back to their seats to watch leaving them the floor to themselves. they danced so well together which was odd really because they didn't actually like each other very much. My dad's dancing forte was the slow foxtrot which was my mum's favourite dance fortunately! Carole
  10. I'm a huge fan of Strictly and would have been very disappointed if Stacey and Kevin hadn't won. As has been said what that girl achieved was amazing and although clearly she wasn't the best dancer she to me epitomised what the programme is all about. and therefore was the clear winner. Carole
  11. I imagine she's "dumb"founded! Carole
  12. I think we could hazard a guess! Carole
  13. Totally shocked to read this morning ,Can't begin to imagine the pain you are feeling, Like everyone else , I send my sincere condolences and sympathy for your appalling loss. Carole
  14. Had a Zephyr 6 once - back in the 70's I loved it, it was very fast away from a standstill, I personally loved the steering column gear change not everyone's cup of tea I know - and yes it did rust a bit and was inclined to be bit skittish in the snow but nothing a bag of wet sand in the boot couldn't fix! I loved it's roominess you could chuck all the kids in together with the dog plenty of room for everyone and the hardwearing vinyl upholstery showed no signs of stress from all that either. Happy memories! Carole

Just tried to ring again as you suggested - success! apparently the number on the website is not the number to leave him a message on as it goes elsewhere to another part of the company. Anyway it seems to be sorted, so thanks again all. Carole

Thanks to everyone for their input. For the record we've been commissioning canopies for boats for in excess of 40 years and subsequently are pretty clued up on how to make our requirements known. .Looking for cheapness was never on the agenda. Our preferred company in this instance would be Snugtopz but we have had no luck in contacting them. Not living in the area makes calling in to the workshop a bit tricky during the winter months when we' re at home rather than on the boat and we would like to get this new cover made as soon as possible rather than wait for the season to start. Once again thanks to everyone. Carole

Thanks to everyone who was kind enough to respond to my request, unfortunately, one of those most recommended we have pervious experience of and although the canopy was o.k,. our boat was damaged and the other is the company that made the existing one. I have come to the conclusion that any Company is probably only as good as the last job they did! Prior to our present situation I would have had no hesitation in recommending the company that made the one we already have, it's been superb but is now coming up for 11 years old and clearly won't go on forever and we thought to replace it before it became urgent - as the saying goes the best laid plans of mice and men!! Along with, I suspect, lots of other boat owners our dealings with canopy makers over the years has often been fraught with difficulties. Last year we ordered a new canopy wanting exactly the same as we already had. When it arrived it was very different in many respects and not a good fit either, although that was not insurmountable, however the fact that it leaked like a sieve was! they took it away and came back to us a few days later saying that they were unable to make a canopy like we already had - despite the fact that was them who made the existing one!! so we are still using the original. .A recent visit to the boat to check it over revealed that the cover over our saloon roof light had fallen victim to the recent high winds and had disappeared so we find ourselves in need of a company that can make a replacement. Can anyone recommend someone. We've phoned Snugtopz but there's never anyone to answer the phone and left messages have thus far elicited no response. Carole
  20. Wth a philosophy like that, I'm amazed you've lasted long enough to go "Mouldy"! Carole
  21. My husband is the worst back seat driver ever! I refuse to drive with him as a passenger as it is positively dangerous! The down side of this is that I don't get to drive as often as I should, but in all honesty driving isn't half as enjoyable these days as it once was anyway, so I don't feel I'm missing out on much. Carole
  22. Hold ups have a nasty tendency to move south just when you least expect it. they're no substitute for suspenders! Carole
  23. My mother used to tell the story of how her father who had been very badly wounded in the 1st world war was out one day after the war had ended when walking round a corner he bumped in to an old friend who promptly dropped down in a dead faint, he later explained to granddad that he was on his way home having just attended a ceremony for rhe erection of a war Memorial and among the names on it was that of my granddad together with those of both his brothers! In fact both his brothers had been killed and granddad died of his injuries some 15 years later, so it was somewhat prophetic. Carole
  24. We would have found the new bypass very useful when we lived on that side of Ely but now we rarely go through that part of the town so it came too late for us sadly. Carole
  25. When we moved to the Ely area like you do now Jean we felt as if we were already partially living there because of having the boat moored there for so many years. In particular I would advise you to be very careful not to under estimate what your home requirements will be when retired. We did, bought a brand new bungalow and finished up making a further move 3 years later because although very large it simply wasn't enough. Carole
