  1. Quoting myself? Sorry I was a bit hasty when I wrote this. I'm thinking places like Ranworth. There seems to be parking looking at google, but not much. Before now I have driven down long, narrow roads only to find "private parking" signs. Repps is one such place.
  2. I found this old thread and thought I'd give it a poke in the ribs. We were aboard over the weekend as usual we like to take the time to explore in between my glueing or fibreglass operations. Saturday found us trying out the walk alongside the Bure Valley Railway from Wroxham. We found it to be a bit narrow, a high hedge one side and not much of a view the other, and there were bikes. We went for a mile before turning back. Is this walk any better further along? Also, is there any free or reasonably charged parking near to the Broads favourite places? I know, the answer is to get the boat finished and get out there on the rivers! All in good time....
  3. Unfortunately we weren't able to get over last weekend so my Brother in law Paul, posted the memory stick which arrived this morning. It's interesting......... Firstly a note about the Norfolk Records Office: I had email correspondence with Chloe, a very pleasant and helpful lady back in December after which I decided due to Covid, to wait until it was a lot safer to visit. Paul tried to ring the office but their phone system seemed faulty so I replied to the correspondence again. This time a Vaughan answered, asking me to give him Paul's number so that he could ring him to arrange things. This happened and I now have photos of all the documents. Excellent service I think, well done NRO! Anyway briefly until I've done more research: Hull built by Aqua-Fibre Limited in 1969, Moulding No.76 at Rackheath. I was distracted when I went looking for Rackheath and found it to be an old airfield. The hull was built for L.J. Eastwood and finished at Brundall according to surveys etc. No mention of it being built anywhere else, by sub-contractors as suggested to me. I have full names and addresses of owners but I'll not be showing documents. First owner as we already knew was Sam Hornor but documents show that it was Sam who registered the "Gipsy III Horning" to give her full name, as a small ship, registered at Gt Yarmouth as still seen on the stern. Odd that, as Sam's son Peter told me the boat never went to sea under his ownership. Next owner in May 1975 was Len Frampton, a hotelier of Brighton and it was Len who changed the name to Denham Owl in August 1975. At the time of the name change she was recorded as lying at Gt Yarmouth. But Len only owned her until September 1976 when ownership changed to Edward Woodward and she moved to the Thames. Mr Callan sold her on to a TV producer in June 1978. After that there are a series of changes until records run out in the late eighties. So one question is answered: who registered her as a small ship? But not, who fitted the "auto-pilot" steeering gear and why? And why the name change? Research goes on. Lastly: although not on the register I am still on the list of owners of this boat. Via the register I can see the occupations of some of the previous owners. The trend is definitely downwards socially, and it can't go any lower!
  4. Very doubtful I would think. Unless someone bought up the other yards and developed the whole place, I wouldn't think residential just there would have much appeal. Please save us from rows of cabins with very amusing plastic, pink flamingos and pot plants. My money would be on moorings and maintenance for a start.
  5. Looks like quite a few molds and bits of old boat included, and nice big crane to play with. I buy stuff from live, online auctions but it's usually old lawn mowers or engineering bits. I think this one may be beyond my means unfortunately. And as there's no premium bond draw before this auction, I'm definitely out. But if anyone wants a Project Manager.....
  6. Now if the TV cameras had been there, I would have tuned in!
  7. Wards picture is the two part 200g. This is Force4's version: https://www.force4.co.uk/item/Osculati/Gelcoat-Filler-1-Part-100g-White/YB8
  8. There are but they won't be epoxy or polyester I think, both of which cure by chemical reaction and would be the best way to go with grp. Try Big Boy at Toolstation (ooh er, missus ).
  9. I think the best you can hope for is a development sympathetic to the areas history, which could happen. There are plenty of new houses going up, with retro styling. Near to me they are about to complete a small, upmarket development of houses with external chimney breasts, retro style rainwater guttering (stainless steel!) and even imitation bricked up windows!
  10. Where ever people shop, they will have already paid rates/rent into the local economy. The people who make the decisions will balance up the potential between industry and residential. An old, dying boat yard has little chance in an economy where people want luxury apartments overlooking water. However, if they changed business to manufacturing batteries for electric cars, with all the subsidies that would bring, things could go the other way.
  11. But at least you know what you are getting with venture capitalist. Directors who sell out exploit ordinary working people for years then cast them to the wolves. One you know what to expect, the other you thought you knew what to expect.
  12. Houses contain people who pay rates, eat and shop in the area. Cram in more people and more goes into the local economy.
  13. It doesn't have to be all bad. The holiday view "cottages" at Brundall Gardens don't look like eyesores to my eyes. While a bunch of industrial buildings may be said to have character, for me they would have to be the attractive, Victorian kind before I would argue to keep them. I can't see them getting rid of the refuelling anytime soon; it would give the people in the fancy apartments some amusement as they sip G&T on the varanda. There is a photo somewhere, probably on the wall of the Yare pub, of the road beyond the level crossing, accross fields.... I think they call it progress.
  14. I've used just about all the selling platforms and could probably write another book about all the silly replies I've had. If you take the view that getting someone to come and collect it is cheaper and less hassle than going to the tip, then Gumtree or Facebook marketplace with a price tag of around a tenner should see it go fast. That said, you are still likely to get someone asking if can deliver it, or "can I send a courier?". Aagh!
  15. I think the idea may be that you hire a lodge and a day boat at the same time. As has been pointed out, there is a limited view so without a dayboat it would be hard to see the appeal.
  16. ...and electric car charging points, and a solar panel or two, and how a school that never seems to get built? That gets them every time!
  17. Great news: My Brother in law has just been to the Norfolk Record Office on my behalf and photographed all the documents relating to Gipsy 3/Denham Owl. As a teaser he has sent me one showing that ownership transfered to one Edward Woodward in September 1976. I need to get over to Dereham with a memory stick to see the rest....
  18. We have one on board, next to the pump out one. Use the pump out one and you have to move the boat and pay somewhere around £20 to have it pumped out. Use the marina toilets and the p/p is for emergency No1s in the night. It's an age thing y'know. I would: Clean the outside of it. Pick it up and see how full it is. It'll never fall over in the car unless you put it on something uneven or corner like L. Hamilton. It splits in two via a lever at the back - the top half contains flush. Have a look on Youtube and you'll see how easy it is to empty them.
  19. These do a lot of caravan/motorhome stuff: https://www.leisureshopdirect.com/
  20. I keep buying interesting stuff at auction when maybe I shouldn't. A while ago I acquired a quantity of these magazines simply because I had never heard of them before and I was fascinated. However, I seem to have found something for which there is very little information available, even through this interweb thingy. Reading them makes me think they were aimed at the Merchant Navy? This issue has adverts for shipbuilders (Vickers Armstrongs), ship's engineers and shipping companies. And Dewars whisky! I wondered if anyone here has ever heard of it?

And going back to somewhere near the original subject: one reason for today's catering problems could be to do with the way we have come to expect higher standards when we dine out. I'll bet the places we hear praised on this forum and elsewhere all use the best available fresh ingredients and staff to prepare it? Remember Little Chefs? Happy Eaters? I was Distribution Manager in a Puritan Maid depot. They were a wholly owned distribution subsidiary of Trusthouse Forte who owned the afore mentioned as well the hotels. We supplied the hotels with fresh stuff while the roadsiders got frozen and tinned. The idea being that during slack periods very little food was wasted. Sounds awful now but August Bank Holidays were hysterically busy!

Cor blimey it's all Lorry Drivers round here! You can't seem to get away from them.. I was a Distribution Manager around 1988 and when the big warehouses opened up around here (Magna Park) it was like a magnet for all logistics staff, me included; I could earn more as a class 1 driver with no responsibility. However: 1994 - time and a half for Saturdays, double time Sundays. the rota said we work one in eight Saturdays. Then the big supermarkets started opening on Sundays and over Christmas. Saturdays and Sundays became normal time. So now it's anti social hours, weekends and Bank Holidays and every year you have to have a day's CPC training (thanks Europe, have we binned that yet?). I may be out of date?? How much is medical now? Was about £120. I couldn't wait to get out as soon as my mortgage was paid off. Thankfully for me, all the planets lined up nicely thank you.

It can't be easy trying to get staff in the catering trade at the moment. What future could they offer anybody? The threat of another change to the rules is always there for now. People have had over 12 months now to look around for more permanent jobs or a different career.
  24. Thanks for the heads up, not been in mine either. Risky business being a thief; there's a lot of stealth cameras around these days, and some have alarms. Not noisey alarms, silent ones that alert the owner and start recording. That Ronald Reagan mask won't save yer.
