  1. I have to agree with Mark, the Yare gives value for money, good portion size and quality, their special the steak & ale pie is very popular, we have never had a bad meal there, in or out of the season. Regards Alan
  2. Hi Grace, Me too. but I have found this, Chicks fledge 42 to 46 days after hatching, and remain dependent on their parents for up to two months. Regards Alan
  3. Have any of you looked at the video or stills of the Norwich Peregrine Falcan's recently. The last time I had a look all four had not hatched. No longer small they taking up a lot of the rooftop on the Cathedral now. Regards Alan
  4. Hello David, Sorry but I have edited your post being as the picture that included the plane was on twice and neither of the pictures would load. It is now fine. Thank you again for the pictures. Regards Alan
  5. Hello David, Thank you for the pictures, we like pictures on this forum and anything regarding planes brings John out in a sweat Regards Alan
  6. Hi Matt, I was just coming onto the forum to list this after getting the notification from the BA this morning. I guess being as the sun is out the bridge will be getting its normal rail expansion problems as well. Regards Alan Somerleyton Swing Bridge We have just been advised by Network Rail that Somerleyton Swing Bridge has developed a fault and has become stuck in a partially opened position. We have been advised that boats are unable to pass and that train services are also suspended. Response teams now being mobilised. 10. Hi M, Thank you for posting the picture, this happens from time to time in locks, but in most cases can be avoided before before the boat sinks. If in a lock you have to be aware of the cill and make shure that you are far enough forward away from the cill, the person at the helm should be looking for any problems and hangups, these can be protruding bricks or stonework. Any issues the helmsmen should sound the horn to alert the crew to drop all the paddles on the bottom gate. Once the situation is evaluated the water should be let into the lock from the upper paddles slowly. We once were sharing a lock on the Leed & Liverpool Canal when the other boat got caught, we adopted the above and prevented the above picture happening. I have seen pictures of boats sharing locks where one boat is on top of the other one, where the only course of action is to refloat one of the boats and take it out of the lock to the upper side. The other boat then has to be recovered, not a great task if out in sticks. More instruction is given by most of the yards on the canals these days, which is better for any novices or people who have not been on the canals for several years. Regards Alan
  11. Hi M, I liked your post but sympathise with your accident. Yes a 20 ton plus boat is hard to stop and coming in to moor is using loads of reverse once you have a line ashore, the second time we went on the Leeds Liverpool Canal when the children were in their early teens I had spent most of the week constantly warning them about the ropes, bollards and mooring rings. Needless to say I was the one who ended up at the hospital with the dislocated finger. I put it back in place myself, but Tan said off to the hospital, we were in the middle of know where. So 4 hours plus later, we were back on the boat with my finger taped to the next one. Do you find the none feeling is worse when it is cold? I hope you manage to get on this canal and if you do can you please let us know what it was like and maybe a few pictures. Regards Alan
  12. Hi Hylander, The Nicholson's guide just shows normal bridges and pipe bridges, but there is a lot of them 138 according to the guide. If you go up the Glasson Branch (2 & 3/4 miles) there is 6 locks. We like a few locks and do not mind the swing and lift bridges, some of the swing bridges on the Leeds Liverpool Canal can be a bit tricky, jumping up and down on the end of the bridge does help, well sometimes. How did you find the electric bridge on the Llangollen? Regards Alan
  13. Hello Kadensa, I agree with Trevor that your best bet would be on the Southern Broads, Bramerton Common is ideal for side on mooring practice, the same can be said for Commissioners Cut, if this is empty you can practice stern, port & starboard mooring. Loddon is ideal for stern mooring at the staithe and the journey down whilst narrow is good practice and is among my favourite places on the Broads. Side mooring can be practiced at Somerleyton as Trevor suggests. You could go on the River Waveney, there are a number of 24 hour moorings (North Cave, Worlingham Staithe & Aldeby Hall Staithe) going towards Beccles to practice those side moorings and you can go into the Beccles Yacht Station for the stern mooring. Have a look at this site for all the 24 hour mooring locations:- http://www.enjoythebroads.com/boating/boating-facilities I tend to do all the mooring manoeuvres, but we both step off the boat to moor up, Tan usually is on the back and I step off of the side down the mooring ladders. At all other times; unless it is raining or there are unruly yachts (only happens occasionally) or we are going under the bridges at Yarmouth, Tan has the helm. Regards Alan
  14. Hi Keith, He are some links to boat hire companies on the Lancaster Canal, I have never been on this canal but have seen signs of it from the motorways . http://www.arlen-hireboats.co.uk/ http://www.lancastercanalboathire.com/ http://www.water-babies.co.uk/ http://www.waterfarmboathire.co.uk/ http://www.pintailboats.co.uk/lancaster-canal-holidays/ You may find other dayboat hire companies, but I suspect the above will be the main companies. Regards Alan
  15. Hi Lori, Here are some more pictures of wherries on the following link. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=norfolk+wherries&rlz=1C2BLWB_enGB520GB521&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=PhZxU9GbH6jN7AairIDAAw&sqi=2&ved=0CEkQsAQ&biw=1517&bih=741&dpr=0.9 Regards Alan
  16. Hello Keith, We have hired from Snaygill twice, once in the early 90's and again in 2011 in all we have been on the Leeds Liverpool canal four times over the years. It is well worth a visit, but for your first visit I would suggest the Trent & Mersey or the Llangollen canal due to the single width locks (7ft) rather than the double locks on some of the other canals. Regards Alan
  17. Hello Hylander, Please find the following link for Pennine Cruisers for information and prices on their day boats. http://www.penninecruisers.com/day_boat_hire.htm Also information on Snaygill Boats. http://www.snaygillboats.co.uk/day_boats.htm Regards Alan
  18. Hi Jon, Thank you for the pictures. You or should I say "the boys" have made that hardwood gleam. Keep up the hard work. Regards Alan
  19. Hi Siddy, We bit the bullet and joined the queue and walked through all of the five locks in the upper staircase (five rise) it was very interesting to see the condition of the stonework on these locks. We had our yearly canal holiday on the Leeds Liverpool Canal the previous year in 2011. It is a bit different being at the bottom of the lock and thinking of all the water that is above you. Here is a few pictures of us on the canal going through the locks. Regards Alan
  20. Hi Trevor, That looks a reasonable boat from the small picture, it might cost as much to transport from Devon to the Broads as the price of the boat. Even for a project £3000 seen a very low price. Regards Alan
  21. Hi Grace, Not a chance I am holding the fort until everyone gets back, but for a small fee who knows Regards Alan
  22. Hi Lori, At one time the parking used to be in the centre of the town, the last time we went there we parked in the Kay's Centre car park, looked around the shopping centre and then walked back into the town. So are you heading up to the Lakes? or was it just a day trip. Regards Alan
  23. I Lori, Skipton is a great place to visit and is perfect for an overnight stay. I hope you called into (well just outside Bingley) to have a look at the five and three rise locks. Here is a couple of pictures from the 2012 open days at the locks. Regards Alan
  24. A big thank you from me as well, I look forward for your next trip and another video. Regards Alan
  25. Hi Jon, I thought you were just being your loveable self. One of the joys of being self employed. It should be made compulsory for every one at some time in their lives so they can appreciate what it is like to run a small business. My first in line would be all politicians and people who work in tax offices and VAT departments, doubtful it would give them a sense of humour, but you never know. I bet you could tell us some tales Jon. Regards Alan
