  1. Hello Martin, Welcome to the forum from Tan & myself. I wish you well for the forth coming season and if tides are favourable will moor at Womak Staithe which is one of my favourite Northern Broads locations. I hope you get involved in the discussions on the forum and have fun. If you wish to advertise we do have a number of options available to meet your needs from very cheap sponsorship to banners. Regards Alan
  2. I watched the progamme and endured the two presenters waffle. The houses in some cases were ok but somewhat over priced but may have been ok for Norfolk, but where do they find these people. The older couple paying £362K and then getting an architect to draw up plans for changing it all. Regards Alan
  3. Additional update on this post by the BA. Somerleyton Bridge – Wednesday 29 January Please note that Network Rail has just informed us that the bridge will not be able to operate on Wednesday 29 January between 08:00 and 17:00 due to necessary emergency works being undertaken to the power supply. Exposed damaged posts – Breydon Water, River Yare – 5 Mile bends Breydon Water starboard hand navigation post no. 49, just before the Dickey Works, has been broken off. There is about 1 metre still exposed at average calm water high tide. A replacement Starboard hand buoy has been placed in front of it and a yellow buoy will be placed as close as possible. Further, in the River yare at 5 Mile Bends (the first bends with channel markers upstream of the Berney Mill moorings the fourth and fifth starboard hand marker posts have also been damaged. The fourth has been broken below the water line and is marked with a post and yellow light behind it. The fifth is damaged but still intact – a buoy will be placed in front of it on Thursday 19th Dec. Oulton Broad - Mutford Lock Due to flood damage Mutford Lock will be closed until further notice. For further information please contact the Harbour Master Office at Oulton Broad on 01502 574946. Regards Alan
  4. Hi Sue, We should be lucky to get to the dizzy heights of 20 mph around the suburbs of Sheffield, we have so many speed humps and flow systems, in a small village called Beighton near to where I work there must be between 150 and 200 speed humps. To be honest the only thing that seems to work is the flashing signs with the sad & happy faces, of course these only work with people who were going to slow down any way. I have seen some roads in Norfolk that are down to 15 mph, next it will be back to a man walking in front of all cars with a red flag. One of the main problems in our location is that all town planning and highways departments are run by cyclists. Regards Alan
  5. I have only moored there twice in over 12 years and one of those times was to take on fuel from Sanderson's (so not at the quay as such). I tend to moor up at Reedham Ferry so pay their mooring fee. For the protection of the Rangers at Reedham you should insist on a receipt, any cash business is open to accusations and abuse. It is your right to demand a receipt for any payment made and because it is a service it should be a VAT receipt. Regards Alan
  6. Mr Pooley has been granted retrospective planning permission with minor conditions. For the full story please read:- http://www.angliaafloat.co.uk/news/south_walsham_villager_wins_his_battle_of_the_broad_1_3209488 Regards Alan
  7. It is now a little over 9 months since there were reports that there could be a charge for overnight mooring at Reedham quay in the local press. There are more rumours that this may be charged at the start of the season. I have searched the local press and searched the Broads Authority website but can not find any up to date information regarding this matter. It is apparent that the village do not wish to see a downturn in any visitors. Additional electric posts were installed in the mid to later half of last season, but other than water points there are no other facilities such as public toilets or showers. Can anyone confirm the situation for the start of the season. Regards Alan
  8. Hello Mike, I am glad to hear that both shops are still trading. The Broads needs all these facilities to remain open. Regards Alan
  9. Hello Howard, I fully agree with everthing you mention, it is a great time to be on the water almost alone with all the additional wild life on the Broads. It is a must to make sure you have a hose pipe on board, a lot of water points have the hoses removed over winter. Carry a range of comfort foods for any meals you have to make on board. Make hot water bottles, throws and warm outdoor clothing part of your boat kit. If the boat you are going on has a shore power hook up, have a number of BA shore power cards in hand, you can order direct from the BA and there is a number of outlet such as the larger boat yards that stock them. The latest we have been on the water is the second week in December and the earliest the third week in February. Regards Alan
  10. The NBO forum home page is now working again. As already said these hackers are a pain for everyone. Regards Alan
  11. Hello BB, I have seen a few water side plots over the years, a number of them with part built sheds/buildings no doubt these owners have run out of money, patience or just run foul of the planners. The fact that there is a riverside mooring on the land that was purchased and could not be used; in the topic above. is a complete red tape nightmare. Sadly common sense is rarely used! Regards Alan
  12. It is with regret that I have to report that the NBO has been hacked. Some of our forum members are members on all of the Broads Forums, this message is posted as a means of information. It is sad that any forum is treated in this way and I wish the moderators of the NBO a speedy recovery from this attack. Regards Alan
  13. Hello JTF, That sounds a very good idea, I wish you luck with your endeavour. I hope there will be room for a visitors shack? Regards Alan
  14. Roger Lloyd Pack sadly died on the 16th January. Please see the tributes in "Fairwell to Trigger" in the following link:- http://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/news/farewell_trigger_a_very_norfolk_tribute_to_roger_lloyd_pack_1944_2014_1_3215307 Regards Alan
  15. I have seen this clip before as well. I am not to sure about the style of the front of the boat and the rig looks nothing but trouble in the making. More money than sense springs to mind. Regards Alan
  16. Hi Jon, I like the looks of the old pump and the marine ply interior. Do the blue hulls fair any better on newer plastic hulls? Regards Alan
  17. Update on bridges - 17 January 2014 Trowse Bridge - Not operational (but can be opened at very restricted times, see below) Network Rail have informed us that the current testing has been exhausted without achieving reliable operations of the bridge. Outside contractors are now being sought to rectify the reliability problems. Due to the fact that the bridge has been out of action for some time Network Rail have agreed that they are willing to swing the bridge manually by bringing in plant staff when required. Due to the frequency of London trains and the time it takes to operate a swing manually the bridge can be opened on a Sunday at 09:05 and any night between 02:00 and 04:00 provided seven days' notice has been given to allow for plant staff to be on site. Openings within these times can be arranged by contacting Network Rail through their Area Incident Control Centre. This is staffed 24/7 and they will then pass on the request to the Ipswich Distribution & Plant team for a response. tel 02079 793609 email CO-ANG-EAH-11A@networkrail.co.uk Please find below opening times for the bridge once it becomes operational. If you require a swing you will need to contact Oulton Broad Yacht Station on 01502 574946 and give at least 24hrs notice. We will update this information as soon as we are informed of any progress by Network Rail in regards to the required repair. Oulton Broad Roadbridge This bridge is currently unable to operate. 18. I came out of the trade at 25 because my boss would not pay the extra 2p per hour from £1.23 to £1.25 per hour for the approved electrician rate, the JIB sold everyone down the river before that of course prior to that. Most of other apprentices I ran into at college were fearful of their jobs, at the time in Sheffield it was common practice for some firms to fire apprentices after serving their time rather than making them up. 4 years working in the amusement industry, it could have been worse I could have accepted the job as works engineer for a kitchen manufacture company. In 1981 I became self employed and have been working unpaid for the government ever since. As you say happy days, still working, just! and everyone seems to be retiring but they won't let me join the club. Regards Alan
