  1. The reason I gave that example is that service manuals, such as the one I presume Wayne is using, usually give a point at which to start adjustment and it is usually with Piston 1 at TDC. In a petrol engine, it is very easy to whip a spark plug out and check when the piston reaches this point, not so easy on a diesel. I may have misunderstood his question all together, but as long as he checks the adjustment when the cylinder is at TDC of the compression strokes, he wont go far wrong.
  2. Hmm! This is getting lost in the fog now The point I was trying to make is..............You can adjust both inlet and exhaust on the same cylinder at the top of the compression stroke! It is possible to adjust them at other points in the cycle, but why make life difficult? As far as the term 'Rocking' is concerned, a valve is either opening, closing or 'rocking'.
  3. I see the point you are trying to make but, the only time you can adjust the valve clearances is when the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. This is when the rockers are 'rocking' ie both cam lobes are at their lowest point, both valves shut
  4. No, when a cylinder is rocking, both valves are shut and no pressure is on the rockers, hence they rock backwards and forwards
  5. Well! It will probably tell you to adjust 4 when 1 is at TDC etc. Basically they give you a list something like that. It's to make sure you are adjusting the right set of rockers, at the right point in the 4 stroke cycle. With a diesel engine you will have to look for timing marks on the bottom pulley to achieve this. Cylinder 1 will be the one closest to the bottom pulley end of the engine. So if it says adjust 4 when 1 is at TDC. Rotate the engine untill the timing marks line up.Looks at the rockers on 4 they should both be closed and will rattle back and forth a little. If a valve on 4 is open, then rotate the engine 360 degrees till the marks line up again and look at the rockers on 4 again.
  6. When the piston is at TDC (Top dead centre) the point at which the valves are neither opening or closing. The rockers will then have a little free play in them.
  7. I don't think Col struggles with that concept Roy!!!
  8. Now that is the type of repair we all like coming across

    Crayfish

That reminds me of the logic used by our local fishing club! A huge amount of Rainbow trout escaped from one of the local fish farms into the river, threatening the Brown population. Members were asked to remove any they hooked, but were still told they were only allowed to remove 3 as was the same rule for Brown Muppetry on a grand scale!
  10. iana is quite right. What you have drawn a ring round there is actually the bulb holder. If you pull it out, there should be a 5w bulb in it
  11. Thanks for that Wayne, but being Nanni main dealers, I think they would get a thrashing with the Nanni stick if they were to do such a thing
  12. If anyone knows the Crossland numbers for Nanni oil and fuel filters, I would be very gratefull for them
  13. Yes you do I'm afraid, as the information is displayed for people like Firefighters etc should you not be on the boat when a fire occurs!
  14. I think it's as well the barrels are missing David It would make an awful mess of an aged Horizon
  15. He's a bit of an 'old Trout' these days Perrance It has to be tapping him on the nose before he will strike
  16. I suppose the side screens will be good for keeping the chilly crosswinds off your neck when on the upper decking. Is that Lens own interpretation of the Hoseason's Blue bird on the front there?
  17. I should fit one of those into my system really, as you could melt tarmac with my hot water
  18. Just to make it clear, I'm sure Trev means the top pipe of the heater coil IN the Calorifier, as the top pipe on the Calorifier it's self should be where the domestic hot water pipe is connected. And yes, only disconnect the pipe from the engine when it is relatively cold! This might actually clear your airlock whilst doing this.....Fingers crossed!

There's a cobweb over the lens which doesn't help much either
  20. It might just be airlocked. Try removing the highest of the two pipe carefully while the engine is running to see if water is flowing round the calorifier.
  21. They are both clearly listed in my 'Beccles boaters guide to fish' Perrance
  22. Oh well the big one is clearly a Skate and the little one is a Thorn Back Ray
