When a potential breach is being monitored thay may close the section and install stop planks, in the situation of the canal in question they will install stop planks at locks or at the narrows or bridges to isolate the breached section. Quite a few years ago there was an incident on the Chesterfield Canal where someone managed to pull out a plug out of the bed of the canal. I was servicing a machine in a local canal side pub at the time and saw the empty canal. https://www.worksopguardian.co.uk/news/memories-of-pulling-the-plug-on-canal-1-624620 Regards Alan 1 Quote
Simondo Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 I dont live too far from that breach and we had another one a couple of years ago even closer where we dog walk at Dutton. The T&M Canal all along this stretch has some really dodgy sides I wouldnt be surprised fi there a few more in the coming years hopefully nobody will be caught up in them! 1 Quote
loribear Posted March 22, 2018 Author Posted March 22, 2018 It really needed dredging by the looks of things , it was very shallow . Lori Quote
Guest Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 I'm pretty certain there were 2 Breach's on the Rochdale canal and turned out to be a farmer with a problem with what was then British waterway's . Quote
grendel Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 I just feel sorry for the boat owners who now have to live with the floor at an angle. until the water comes back, I wonder how continuous cruisers are treated in situations like this - after all without water they cannot move. Quote
LizG Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 Wasn't there a situation similar in the Horsey area a few years ago when a hole appeared in a drainage dyke and a lot of water disappeared? Quote
TheQ Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 I believe it was in the last couple of years a pipe collapsed under a dyke. There was a canal drain on the Forth and Clyde some years ago when someone found a chain and pulled it draining a section of canal.. Quote
Hylander Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 This brings back memories of our holiday on the Lancaster Canal. Almost arrived at the canal when the mobile rang and the owner of the canal boat we had hired (who thought it was hilarious, I wont tell you what I thought) announced that the canal was leaking in 3 places and we were unable to pick our boat up from the place we had thought and we had to pick up half way down the canal. This shortened our distance on the canal somewhat. The owner had known about this leak for over 4 days and conveniently left it to inform us when we were almost there. Quote

When it was British waterway's before becoming CRT I'm pretty sure continuous cruisers who couldn't move were given an exception I certainly was at Stanley ferry in Wakefield when I and half a dozen others got caught up with the rivers in full flood at both ends of the marina and canal , that wasn't a problem as all services were available ie water , pump out , diesel etc , if your caught up in breach of the canal those services may not be in handy reach anymore so making life extremely difficult and that could be and often is for months especially with something as big as the one in the video . ranworthbreeze Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 Many Years ago we had booked a holiday on the Caladonian Canal, we were informed that we could only go so far on the canal because the locks at Laggan had collapsed. Basically we could go on the canal sections between and including Loch Oich and Loch Ness but no further. It was a great holiday but the 12 hours plus journey to get there was somewhat tiring 4 adults and a baby in an Escort Van, the 25 foot steel hulled cruiser was also a bit cramped.
