Regattas 2022 To Watch, Avoid Or Just Pass Through.

Hello All,

We are coming up to Regatta season, so for the non sailers among us I thought I’d let you know what’s going on where, and how to avoid / pass through / watch…

There is normal sailing going on at some club on the broads every day, but the numbers aren’t like a full regatta..

Should you get involved with an incident at any of the events, you need to make a note of the sail Number or broads registration number or boat name, preferably all three, plus date and time.

Any clubs officials can’t do anything, without knowing who to contact. Getting a message some weeks after the event, talking of a white coloured boat with white coloured sails is impossible to resolve..

You either then have to go to the club Immediately or Email / phone an address on their website. As soon as possible. (Clubs display a Secretary’s club Email address / phone number or Commodores details normally).

First Regatta of the main Season Is Wroxham held by NBYC. From Sunday 24th July to Sunday 31st July.

This one is easy to avoid, just don’t go on Wroxham Broad,

If you wish to pass through and have a look at the broad while sailing is going on. Please keep to the edges, But be aware some courses sail close to the edges and you may have to stop or take avoiding action..

Also be aware of the Start line which runs from the Box on top of the club house to a lettered board the other side, the letter is shown prominently by the starters box. Being on that line during a start is not a good idea, you could see a huge bunch of boats bearing down on you..

If you wish to mudweight during racing then the only “ safe places” are at the Wroxham end of the broad beyond the racing buoys and near the trees at the Salhouse end of the broad.

You can moor on the “Island” on the river side, but how much you can see from there I have no idea..

The Broad is Private, NBYC pay a lot of money to rent the broad, theoretically they could charge for mud weighting but I’ve never heard of anyone being charged.

The second regatta of the season is Horning from 30th July to the 5th of August.

This is the one most likely to cause consternation to non sailors as it’s very busy 100-150 Competitors is not unknown.

Advice , Not orders, below…

Saturday it starts around 12:00 with the boats sailing down to Black Horse / Little Hoveton Broad, for a 14:00 start.. Should be finished by 17:00

If you wish to avoid, just don’t go on the broad,

If you wish to look at the broad / sailing just go round the edges,

If you wish to mud weight then either the left hand end as you go in or the right hand end as you go in are the best places, you’ll likely see some of our motorboats mud weighted there during racing.

Sunday,  also on Black Horse Broad, same advice , but the boats will be going up there from 09:00 coming back for lunch from 12:00 going back up again from 13:00 and finish around 17:00.

Monday to Friday, the chaos begins…

On the river from the clubhouse / Swan inn Corner, up river to Dydlers Mill, however the big boats could go all the way up to the end of the next straight, if the wind conditions are good.

The first boats are on the water from around 09:15, the last boats finish around 18:00. There is a lull with reduced numbers 12:30 to 14:00

Be particularly careful 09:15- 10:30, as the junior Beginners are out sailing, but they’ll be kept within sight of the clubhouse…

Advice for getting through.

Please keep slowly to the right hand bank, that’s less than 6ft away from it, the competitors are then told to treat you as the bank, if you motor through more than that, you’re likely to get boats both side of you…

This does not mean you may not have to stop or go even slower, as boats may have no choice due to other boats, but to tack in front of you.

If the sailing boat in front tacks away from your bank then go forward…

Don’t worry if there is a boat heading for your side, sailing boats are much more fragile than a motorboat, they don’t wish to damage their pride and joy by hitting you. Even though they maybe tacking just 6 inches from your boats side.

Visitors really interested in sailing, are welcome to visit the club, if you want information please ask, someone will point you to the right person, otherwise you’ll be ignored as everyone is involved with their own part in the event.

Also Monday to Friday it’s an open event so if you are a sailor you can bring your boat and enter..

If you wish to watch there is only Ashore on the Swan Green.

The Next regatta is Hickling Broad SC’s Summer Regatta, it actually overlaps Horning’s this year.

Wednesday 3rd, Thursday, 4th Friday 5th, evenings only 19:30 onwards,

Saturday 6th Sunday 7th 10:00-17:00

Shouldn’t bother many people, since in a motorboat unless you Really Know the broad, you need to keep to the deep water channels, All you can do is slow to let boats cross or pass you.

Just be careful as you approach the club / Pleasure Boat Inn,  next door as this will be the busiest area.

Viewing..

The Pleasure Boat quay heading,

You could mud weight just outside the deep water channel somewhere, but the broads is very weedy..

Ok the next one shouldn’t get in anyone’s way it’s the Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Clubs Sea week. 6th Aug to the 11th Aug.

If you have a problem with passing sailing boats in the North Sea, then you should have stayed on the broads.:default_biggrin:

If you want to watch there various places along the shore if you’ve got binoculars, or you’ll need an anchor, a mud weight won’t do..

This is rapidly followed By Hickling Broad Village Regatta dating from the days where the villages ran Water Frolics before sailing clubs were invented. 13th - 14th August

Starts around 10:00 ish finishes when they feel like it..

Did you know one of the earliest recorded water Frolics was in Great Yarmouth in 1577?

Some bad news, there is excessive weed on Black Horse Broad, causing sailing boats to lose steerage, and rescue boats getting weed clogged propellers. Temporarily sailing has been suspended on the Broad by Horning Sailing club, it's highly likely the traditional club broads regatta weekend on the broad will not take place, but we'll have to race on the river. The times shown above for regatta weekend will remain the same.

Sunday 21st to Friday 26th August,

Oulton Broad regatta, I know it's a big one, but I don't know a lot about it. And I guess they like you to keep to round the edges if you are going through or to the Broad..

27th -29th of August, Barton Broad Regatta, held by the Norfolk Punt Club, a busy regatta, and  it's a lot more than punts.

Races start around 10:00 and last boats around about 17:00,

Again please keep to round the edges of the broad for going through, and mud weighting.

Thanks for the heads up especially for newcomers but surely if there is an incident!! Both craft are required to stop and the skippers exchange details, the fact one is competing in a race should be irrelevent.

We've had people claim there has been an incident, when nobody knew anything about it.

In one claim the club got a message almost a month after the event, claiming one of our boats had torn off their flag pole. The boat information we were given, was it was a white boat with white sails.. On closer inspection of the claim it turned out to be a day after the regatta and therefore it probably wasn't one of ours.. Our lot would have been at home having a rest after 7 days sailing.

We've also had a hire boat sink one of our boats and then drive off... In that case a ranger was actually in sight and stopped them.

I have to ask for clarification on this. Are you asking for boat's to leave the marked channel and stay near the edge??

NO, in the deep water channel, but near  markers and posts, so not straight down the middle of a Broad or River, with hoards of sailing boats heading at them from all directions and the motorboat driver not knowing where to go..

OK just a three days till Wroxham Regatta starts and 6 days after that Horning regatta starts so it's time for a bump up of this thread so people can be reminded of the chaos us sailors can cause..:default_biggrin:

Ok folks there has been an amber warning put out for road traffic this weekend,

So I'm putting out an amber warning for river traffic on the River Bure in Horning / Hoveton from tomorrow Saturday. Hoveton? Yep once we are past the dyke into Black Horse broad we are sailing in the waters of the parish of Hoveton.

Yep Horning Regatta starts tomorrow, I'll be dropping the keep right buoy in the water between the Swan Inn and the parish staithe. Repaired for the second year running having been run over again.

First boats out 14:00 Saturday,

The forecast for the first few days of the regatta are light winds with heavy rain on Sunday. This combined with spring tides means sailing will be a struggle , boats will not be moving fast, and there's not a lot we can do about that..

Apologies for getting in your way..

If you see a white keel boat with the number 96 on it and a pointed thing in the front - it might be me going backwards!

What Q didn't mention in the last post but discussed earlier in the thread - boats will be sailing on the river on Saturday and Sunday which isn't usually the case - so be warned!

Sorry that there will not be a fair wind blowing for the boats.    Just lately it has been really windy.   Typical when you need it,   just the opposite happens.    Have lots of fun and please tell us any interesting tales when it is all over.

I realise your Amber Warning is slightly tongue in cheek.    If people are careful and considerate it will be fine.

Thank you for the warning of heavy rain,  oh boy we could do with it.

Passed through Horning regatta today and followed the advice given to stay hard right and slow.  Not moaning but we spotted several sailors doing the exact same thing forcing us into the middle of the river on 2 occasions.

Only managed the one photo as it was a tad busy on the river!  Most of the skippers seemed happy with how we passed and we received several waves of thanks…

There is a C-in-C (well three actually) taking place this coming week. All three will be consisting of woody classic Dyno juice consumers

You do not need to keep clear or hug any banks as we like to think we know what we’re doing and also know where we are going!

1) Wednesday 10th - afternoon a loosely timed cruise from Salhouse to Stracey a dozen or so craft

2) Thursday 11th  0500-ish from Stracey to OBYS maybe 18-ish craft

3) Friday 12th The Main event, craft dressed overall - midday- all of us, up to Thirty craft?  From OBYS to Beccles. The Annual Woody Boat show to Sunday afternoon
