  1. Just across the yard? How did I miss that? Yes it will be nice to lose that vertical' 2 joins is much more reassuring!
  2. Yes I think I saw an episode about Holland a while back, will set to record thanks.
  3. So...about that varnish........
  4. I would say that the form of the boat reflects the original intentions of the builders and therefore remains even when much, or even all, of the structure is renewed.
  5. Very sad news about a brave and lovely man.
  6. Ok try this line of enquiry: in what does the essence of the boat lie, it's constituent, and replaceable parts, or in the whole? Are we in fact relating our perception of 'boat' to some shadow we saw last time we were chained in a cave?
  7. None of it's eco friendly when you get right down to it. The best option is to use the freshwater stuff I guess but I have always ended up persuaded to go for the red antifoul as being better. None would be lovely but impractical.
  8. Can I bring my own knicker elastic? I know where that has been.
  9. Yes Briiliant is frame and rib, which I think is a good thing. For me Danboline is a definite inside hull treatment.
  10. Ohhh that is a relief, I thought you mentioned the keel!
  11. I now have a temporary varnishing shelter on the patio. £29 from Roy’s
  12. Yes it's there, it just got joined on to the last line. You are 31 which I feel sure will be no problem. I mailed the ranger today asking him how far we can extend our reservation. Job for tomorrow is to put us all on a spreadsheet because it's only really Saturday that is 'peak occupancy' so I can reduce our request for the other two nights accordingly.
  13. And the baby Blake is mostly original.
  14. Well it’s nowhere near 100% despite the scary numbers in lengths of larch. There must be upwards of 1000ft in the whole boat. 390ft per side + transom + all decks + bulkheads + fit out
  15. No not Rex that’s Latin, however I have no idea what king is in Greek so no doubt we will soon have a post that sets it straight
  16. Plastic indeed, next thing they will be moulding hulls in GRP! Er....hang on a minute.....?

Ok guys that's 30 Boats (31) actually, so I will check about extending our numbers tomorrow, then reopen bookings as I am advised by Salhouse Warden. Feel free to book as a 'reserve list' in the meantime, but please understand that I have to get confirmation.
  18. Wash your keyboard out with soap and water JM, it's not like you don't care for a Press cruiser even older than Brilliant!
  19. Briliant is tucked up in the dry and out of the wind. She has a nice new set of port side ribs in oak and next, Doug is going for the port side planking in larch, restoring much of her original oak and larch structure. Next will come the starboard side ribs and more planking. Once this is all settled there is a hole in the hog to repair, which will necessitate dropping the keel to access the planks. Next it's caulk and fill, then over to the boatyard for painting. As Doug said, we could have patched her up for several more seasons, but this way she will be right, and as a bit of Broads History, I think it's what ought to happen. We spent this afternoon removing locker tops, bunk sides and doors to take home for stripping and varnishing so the car is pretty full. Sorry, I forgot to take pics but Doug has some I believe.
  20. Perfect pace I think, keep it coming, please.

    My Day

Over to Norfolk today. We stopped for an early lunch at Elveden Estate Courtyard and then headed to Upton. Doug met us there and we spent a busy afternoon crawling around Brilliant's bilges, as you do , and removing anything portable that could come home for varnishing, loo door, cupboard doors, locker tops and bunk sides. This was all most satisfactory. We headed for our mooring and I got my wellies out to paddle through to our shed, which is above the water level, just, I checked that out to see all was well , it was. It was then time for the obligatory pilgrimage to Roy's for scones and a browse for bargains. Now, most unfortunately, I had left my bank cards at home, so Phill paid up. We had booked into The Swan in Horning for overnight, the rooms are newly refurbished and ours looked really lovely. Dinner was a chance to meet up with Steve and Nik, and Doug, so we convened at The New Inn for a delicious meal and enjoyable chat, thanks guys for the excellent company. We are back at The Swan now so nighty night!
  22. Welcome from me too, the Spring and Summer Gathering sign up threads are the place to go if you are interested in either. It's a great way to get to know folks.
