Hi Neil, I understand your logic, as we all know the current through yarmouth is quite great so it wouldn't take much even for an underpowered boat to hit 10kts through there. And I personally believe the "speed by engine rev's" on hireboats can make this an issue, it's visible on the southern rivers quite a bit, "even though the tides behind me, I'm on 2200 revs so I'm doing 6mph", I believe there should a be a note on there "Consider the current" as a newbie can get unstuck. Although I do believe, given the sight of that bowwave that boat was going a bit over 6mph We do need strowager to explain hull speed, he does it really well! But I guess this is a 40 footer so even with a small engine due to the hull length I suspect is displacement hull speed is probably about 8 - 10 kts which is fast enough for the broads. I've not seen regulators on boats, I've seen where they limit the range of the actual throttle control though, I suspect the yards typically fit them out with smaller engines, although as above I guess as they get longer this isn't enough.. Personally I don't think they should limit them as they should be able to hit the current through yarmouth if needed, I've seen boats struggle to beat the tide through yarmouth before and it's a bit alarming certainly when you see them drifting backwards towards the bridge.. Obviously that does rely on the boat being helmed sensibly and if not then they shouldn't be helmed at all. IMHO
  2. I'm sure that's Iain.. The lights still aren't on so they are all still in the pub drinking.. Proper scots! If it is you Iain check on Orca for us
  3. Here here Paul. Do we need to give Dave a few warning points for advertising the southern broads..? I'll let my parents know though you are referring to them as Sea monsters.. (Probably spot on though!).. David. Keep going mate, this is brilliant.. Pictures are stunning. The southern broads is lovely and you are clearly capturing them really well
  4. Hi Pete, Yup sorry about Grace.. I'm surprised she's not been pestering you for free magnums yet?? (Perhaps she doesn't like Ice cream.. ever thought about selling shoes?)...
  5. Hoping to catch you one day guys. I like a bit of live music.. Although not sure when though.
  6. Lol we certainly couldn't David.. Thankfully too the drive is getting shorter each time (or feels it). We have 5 day trip next so looking forward to that. Glad to hear you booked the same boat for next year it looked stunning and Silverline are very good The priory is well worth a wander around, I'm surprised it not advertised much as it's better than some of English heritages paid places (although theres not a lot there but is still worth a wonder)

Geez I just saw this, this is unacceptable.. Looking at the comments it appears it will be followed up. There's no excuse for racing through there like that. I'd say certainly report them to the BA.
  8. Hope you are feeling better Iain. Perhaps best to just stay off the whiskey for a bit.. Hope it doesn't spoil your trip though
  9. Day Trip.. "Can't stay away" Saturday 9th May Ok so we really couldn't stay away. Wondering what to do today because rain was forecast which isn't perfect weather for resealing windows which we had planned on the other boat we thought a little day trip would be good. So left home at 9am headed to the local motor factors for bits. Arrived at the boat at about lunch time. Dave quickly got on fixing the fuel leak which he managed! With this fixed he was able to turn the idle down. Mooring lines undone, Orca started a bit easier and once in gear it was clear that she handles a hell of a lot better, no crunching and very smooth on the throttle. All seemed good so we headed downstream to St Olaves. Despite the strong wind she handled well! Mooring up at the bell inns mooring against the current aided by the wind was all nice and easy Into the Bell Inn for lunch. Burgers and Bure Gold Shandy. It was the first time for us in the bell inn, it was OK... Food wasn't brilliant but it's hit and miss with burgers, but service was good so we will be back in. We've not been to St Olaves for many many years and the last time we was there we stumbled across the Priory and it's vaulted ceiling, so as we had time we found it again... Well worth a look around. It's just up the road from the pub. The liamas in the farm next door was a bit afraid of us and stayed away. Back to the boat and back to the marina without any problems. It was a nice couple of hours in norfolk, good to know the boats fixed and she's starting to feel trustworthy, so all ready for the next trip up which is a nice 5 day trip so hopefully we will make it into norwich Few pics attached.
  10. She looks a lovely lady, I can't wait to see her one day
  11. I'd say goodchild although they only appear to have a 32 ton crane... at 90 tons you may struggle to get a lift without hiring some seriously big crane which will be more than paying for a dry dock (considering you will probably need to hire a 200 ton crane for the extra safety margin). There are (probably) cheaper dry docks down here on the medway as we have a few (big) liveboards, but it's a bit of a trek obviously. You can get an ultrasound done in the water if required?
  12. Lol Whys that Steve? Fishing?...
  13. LOL! Sorry Jill I mean the Otter of course!! I'm sure you (Jill) didn't see it and certainly didn't aim for it!! If you did don't tell my mum as she's a serious otter fan!
  14. lol sorry.. but that made me giggle... stupid creature
  15. Iain! You can't say that and stop short! Hope you are OK and it's not affecting your holiday too much
  16. Thanks for the advice Stuart. It's good to have you on the forum! I'm hoping you can find the time to share more details of your tasks on the broads. We are all very nosy If you and your colleagues can keep a close eye on my boat down south I'd be very grateful!! Grace lol what are you like!
  17. Aww a cool (dare I say little ) narrow boat, there's not many on the broads but perfect for the northern broads. Looking forward to reading more about your trips
  18. Good to hear you are still with us Juli! Dilham is lovely.. I've been there once.. another low bridge town To upload a picture, on a computer/laptop, click the "More reply options" button. You will then see an "Attach files" button, which upon clicking will give you an uploads screen. On a mobile using taptalk app, click the "+" button beside the comments box to upload a picture from your phone memory. Any problems though just drop us a message
  19. I think we've scared Juli off (again).. Perhaps we shouldn't mention pictures until post 10?
  20. All the boats I hired I never ran the engine unless moving off, although we've always done lots of motoring. So showers are done as and when there's hot water. If there's no hot water then there's no hot water I wouldn't dream of running the engine to get hot water?! (do people really do that?!) If the batteries run out then there's a problem there so call the yard and get them to come and look. The batteries should last overnight really. I've always found the heating fires up with no problems again without the need to run the engine. On Orca the same is true we only have tiny batteries but so far they have been brilliant and lasted ages, even when ashore with the heating being used and the engine never run. We do see a power drain when the heater is started but it still copes. My parents for some reason do run their engine to get the heater going but because the former mechanic told them to (instead of fixing the problem) and they won't listen to me! When I use it I don't run the engine and it's fine! I noticed on one of the hire induction videos on the internet it tells people to start the engine in the morning to get water etc if the boat doesn't do much of a run so perhaps as others have said this is just a misunderstanding/holiday mode!, as others have mentioned I doubt people are knowingly being rude as people generally really aren't like that? Perhaps there is a problem with too much electrical bits on boats these days but I can't comment as I've not been near one for ages (Geez I'm sounding old..!) Personally for me, I've not noticed the running of engines as a problem, only a couple of times maybe but I don't moor near people really and if you do then perhaps this is, rightly or wrongly something to be expected.. aboard too Bryan (if I've not welcomed you before .. Nice post so please step in more often too
  21. Stunning pictures David! Loving the tale please keep going! I do hope Steve and Debs didn't force you into drinking too much that evening!!
  22. Thats not too bad Mark, I think they were £18 in jeckles which isn't overly steep but it's not going to be used that much as a tree normally works well but it's good to have! If MM or Andy doesn't have some we will have a wonder up to wroxham
  23. @vanillaice99 - When looking for a single one I noticed a few doubles on ebay. Some looked in good condition.. (Can I have a free flake now?)
