  1. Andy, am sure that you'll find canoeing through Bungay absolutely fascinating, passing under the private bridges from people's gardens for example.
  2. Google is a useful thing! https://www.flickr.com/photos/ryandavies1990/7760680524/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/ryandavies1990/7760628700/in/photostream/
  3. The River Waveney at Ellingham, when a wherry could use the lock at Geldeston and could sail up to Bungay, pre WW1. Today, with a spot of portage perfectly possible in a canoe, and well worth the effort too.
  4. Norwich is the place for hen-parties etc., wha-hey! http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/norwich_pub_bends_rules_to_sell_32pc_beer_1_3829074
  5. 'Foreigners' have long been welcome in Broadland but they can hardly complain about change for they are part and parcel of it. I recently met a lady from London who tells me her family have now all moved up here, sixteen of them in total! Incomers do create impact, it's inevitable. My Mum's family moved up here before 1460, maintaining a reasonably straight family tree until the 1930's. Dad's a bit of a foreigner though, his family moved up here from Halesworth in 1911.
  6. That wouldn't surprise me in the least. Boatwise, at least, you don't need to look far before finding whatever it was that you wanted hidden under a layer of cobwebs and sawdust! So if it's a Heinkel bomber you want I suspect Martham's sheds are as likely a place as any to find one! Actually I did notice a bi-plane in a barn on Cess Road.
  7. Exactly and probably why a number of us joined NBN.
  8. A very real reason for holidaying on the Broads: http://www.rte.ie/news/2014/1101/656215-islamic-state/
  9. I know that it is, but in fairness to the user, it is a comparatively recent phenomenon. I agree, its use is misleading, shouldn't be used. Perhaps I worded my previous comment badly.

  11. Andy, I'm pleased that you are suggesting change over on the NBO. Even council elections give voting numbers, I think that only right and proper. A previous release of statistics showed a low vote to some winners, possibly the owner & his wife, their son . . . . . . . . . well, I'm sure that you get my drift. 50% of 6 is only 3, hardly convincing. Your certificate hardly highlights NBO in comparison to Broads Awards! Nothing is ever perfect so I hope that your advice is heeded. Re that 'Official' tag, just for the record it hasn't been in use for ten years & I did question the forum owner and made my feelings known, I agree that his use of that term is unwarranted. Can't think of any criticisms that I can aim at the NBN though!! Had the NBN been organising said awards then I doubt that I would be here now. The awards are well intended but for me they are tacky.
  12. The other place with WWII hangers is Martham Boats at Cess Road, would you believe, Martham.
  13. So this annual topic trundles on and on, so I shall add to it! Let's be clear, I have no objection to the NBO hosting and promoting the NBO Awards, for that is what they really are. For the NBO to call their awards the Broads Awards is both misleading and overly pretentious. Were they called the NBO Awards then I doubt very much that there would be this annual shrill of indignation on other forums, indeed they could then have some credibility and might even become more relevant. Like some I well remember when the stats were either hacked or inadvertently released, that made for interesting and amusing reading! Andy, I have no interest in the NBO, for personal reasons, nor am I really that bothered whether they wish improve their image or not so I won't be posting my thoughts over there but thanks for the suggestion. However, should they wisely take heed of comments on here & NBF then good luck to them, some wise counsel out here in the real world!
  14. At the end of the day, in the scale of things, it is an incredibly small vote that is deciding whether a business is 'best' or not. The title, Broads Awards, suggests something rather more grand and of far greater significance than it really is. The long and the short of it is that I think Joe Public is being mislead, albeit with the best of intentions.
  15. Sure are! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_museums_in_Norfolk Suffolk do a long list too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_museums_in_Suffolk
  16. It does and there is a boardwalk between the two. Only problems are the sluices at Homersfield, Ellingham, Bungay and probably one or two other places too. So long as your bathtub has wheels and folding roof you should have no problem. Very pretty part of the Waveney, worth a canoe or kayak trip.
  17. http://www.rainair.co.uk/history.html The Flixton Air Museum is well worth searching out, in my opinion. http://www.aviationmuseum.net/
  18. Perhaps such awards are outside the scope of forums and best left to the experts.
  19. Helicopters are very good for lifting folk off mudflats! That aside I often wonder why folk can't simply stay aboard until the tide returns. Can always scrub the boat's bottom whilst waiting.
  20. Although NWT have been less than helpful over mud disposal on Heigham Sound I do think that, on balance, they do a good job for the Broads. The Broads Authority do receive a hefty grant from DEFRA, e.g. the taxpayer, to pay for conservation work. Although I wear my captain's hat with pride I do also have an olive drab coloured hat in the background because just behind sailing boats, nature and conservation come pretty high in my priorities. As much as I mob the Authority, apart from the dosh and vanity, I reckon they get the balance about right.
  21. Andy, please re-read the above. The Pub of the Year Awards were originally conceived to encourage folk to visit more, if not all the pubs in Broadland. The problem came when customers simply visited the winners, and then just voted for them without visiting other pubs. In hindsight we had an advantage over other pubs in that we had over fifty moorings associated with the pub and thirty plus caravans so we always had a large, captive customer base. Effectively the losers ended up promoting the winners thus the competition died, understandably. The Broads Awards is not played on a level playing field. Voters have to be forum members, businesses have to support and promote a forum. I don't doubt that Andy offers his customers an award level experience but then so do other small yards, I could name a few, but quite possibly they don't promote themselves on forums and probably don't canvas votes or even promote the Awards.
  22. Romane, Scots Annie, hard working girls, so I'm told, back in the sixties when ten bob used to pay for a good night out! 2/6p to see the Rolling Stones, 2/6p for a cod & chips, 1/2p for a pint, yes, it was possible to go home with change, or a . . . . . . . . . .
  23. Chicken breast-hooks and rare, transom steaks take some beating!
  24. Sex shop gone, now it's an E-F*g shop. Says a lot about the good folk of Lowestoft!!
