  1. As to the number of locks I know of three: Honing at the side of Dilham Broad Briggate & Ebridge Mill It is the stretch either side of River Mount that appears to have come to a full stop.
  2. Very interesting the difference between de-silting and dredging. The canal is about half a mile over the field at the back of my house and they have had diggers working around Swafield for weeks this summer. In fact it has been de-silted above Swayfield Bridge. I wonder if the EA did not want it disturbed because of the inpact on fish, amphibians, larvae etc. Or were afraid of distubed agricultural and septic tank run off entering the upper Ant at Wayford. As has been said many times the big problem was always water supply. In summer you could only open the locks once or twice a day. Nowadays given greater extraction coupled with the fact Antingham Ponds are private ornate lakes I can not see that problem being resolved.
  3. I have booked an appointment at Lings in North Walsham. In the meantime my only defence is poor eyesight. I most humbly appologise and beg forgiveness.
  4. Roys, excellent, Lathams ((QD) Not if you want anything decent. But if you want a case of coke, a case of beer, four sirloins for a BBQ etc in other words a family weekly shop Tesco makes sense. People know Tesco ( Tessy Cohen, the founder Jack's wife ) and it is in, out, one stop. I see boats come up the Ant of a morning and down the Ant of an afternoon. They have shopped and "Done" Barton, maybe lunch at Wayford or Neatishead. Been so for the ten years I have lived here. And I see the crews carrying Tesco bags across the 149.

  6. No, the vast number of boats and all hire boats do not and there is no requirement to do so. I shall however set a light whenever I do because 1. I can be seen on even a moonless night 2. I feel safer 3. It makes going on deck at night much safer should you drag 4. And it makes common sense. One of my best friends died 49 years ago last month, the day after we left school. He had a place at Oxford to study biochemistry. He was riding home on a rainy night on his Honda 125, the Police said he was well instide the 30mph limit. Someone could not be bothered to put proper lighting on a skip in the road.

Up here on the coast it has clouded over and the wind strength has increased considerably. If it is the same on Barton conditions could be testing.
  8. I appologise profusely. My glasses are coming up for replacement after two years in December.
  9. Strewth Griff, I just looked quick and thought the gentleman seated left was Jeremy Corbyn!
  10. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are Ant busy days as people run out of food and drink brought from home and make for Tesco in Stalham.
  11. I just hang mine in an appropriate manner. Tied on top of the canopy's highest point when weighted. Out on the river side when wild on a bank. Yachts have no problem on the forestay or a crosstree. Come morning it goes back in it's box.
  12. I meant to add that it has a photoelectric cell so turns itself on and off so is very useful when returning to your boat after dark. Had mine nine years and would recommend.
  13. I don't want to put this on the other thread and I am certainly not saying that one could have prevented the tragic events of Thursday evening Perhaps it is coming back only in the last ten years to the Broads after a gap of 40 years and the time between being on the sea but I have always set an anchor light when weighted. in fact I set it if wild moored along the river and certainly in Fleet Dyke that sees a lot of after dark movement. The beauty of this one is it's very small current draw. http://www.force4.co.uk/force-4-utility-anchor-light.html#.V8FnWpgrJP4

Nice breeze setting in now, should be good for both crews and spectators. I would love to be anchored out there watching today. But circumstance will keep the boat tied up in Stalham.
  15. Not good news Peter, but from what you say not as serious as reported in the press and on line for the mother. So good from that stand point.
  16. In all honesty Sutton is so popular as a last night for Stalham, with the pub on hand for a last meal, 5pm is too late any day of the week in the hiring season. In high season I have seen boats circling in the broad like sharks at 11am waiting for leavers.
  17. My understanding is as a distributor road linking mass urban development there will eventually be so many roundabouts on it into housing that the speed will be such that noise should not be a problem. Air pollution, maybe, but not noise.
  18. Totally agree Peter, there is no point in chewing the fat on this one and who knows it could cause distress. The relevant authorities have matters in hand and as you say all will be revealed in the fullness of time. As has been said, I am sure we all hope for a speedy but more importantly full recovery for those involved.
  19. What a very sad end to what should have been a fun evening out. http://www.ybw.com/news-from-yachting-boating-world/two-hospitalised-speedboat-crash-oulton-broad-41291 Other reports say the vessel was not a conventional speedboat but in fact a RIB. Let us wish those involved a speedy recovery.
  20. It has stood since circa 1385. If you are unable to pass through get a boat that can. Marthams Jubilee and Judiths are not exactly small and they go through. If it were not for the bridge the Upper Thurne would be like the rest of the Northern Broads overcrowded and not peaceful during the summer.

A deck chair on Ludham Bridge. Best free show in Norfolk. Especially if a decent breeze gets going!
  22. I was looking earlier at UK coastguard regarding The Camber Sands incident ( an area I know well) The Oulton incident in on there also Speedboat with two adults and two children collided with a moored craft occupants taken to hospital by ambulance. There were no further details.
  23. They would look to entertain, inform and amuse. One can not expect an Andrew Marr confrontational interview on a local station talking about their back yard. Give the fellow a break, he has said it is for marketing purposes on a worldwide stage. If he or the organisation renege on that promise then hold them to account.
  24. Seems it made the BBC news. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-37168678
