  1. Where can you find accommodation twix The City and Canary Wharf for £13K? pa! Actually it is a bl*/$dy bargain! Deduct an annual season ticket from Princes Risborough, live on the boat Monday to Friday and it stars to make a lot of sense.
  2. I like Hull, Both my sons went to Hull University but @ £11K that beats St Katherines by Tower Bridge who's fees ranged from £700 to £800 per metre the last time I looked. Electricity was about £1000 on top. Short term is quite a lot more however.
  3. You will pay £4 to 5K for a 30 footer along the South Coast if you can find availability, most have waiting lists. And not all will be "any state of the tide" which can mean some weekends you will not sail.

    Big Tide Today

Full moon yesterday nearest to equinox and a strong North Wester overnight. Entirely predicable. Winds are settling down now.
  5. Our bungalow is 250 metres from the village church. It, along with our rather not remember the final figure, German conservatory is so well insulated we cannot her bell ringing practice on a Friday night. That is however a god send as my seriously ill wife goes to sleep in the early evening.
  6. Not surprising, get above 20hp and many cruisers have their bottom outboard mounting below the waterline!!! Remove those bolts and you have a big problem. Which is all a bit stupid as the main reason I like outboard power is total hull integrity
  7. Better look outside if you want to see a near full harvest moon an the nearest to the Autumnal Equinox. It is actually full at about 3pm tomorrow but we may not see the harvest moon for a few days in Norfolk after tonight as the weather is breaking with it! "Beginnin to sound like my farmin grand parents who did everythin by moon"
  8. Which is why when the shout comes the guys have to respond. If the morons can't be trusted to look after themselves, god knows what would happen if they were left to their own efforts. I think you have to accept that a section of society are pretty incapable of, really doing very much. If that is so then the rest of us have to look after them, that is what a civilised society does. Just hope we are not being duped by those too lazy to put in a reasonable effort.
  9. The John Pye website now says sale suspended.
  10. Yes they are, like estate agents they over value to get the business, then tell you it is overpriced. The danger is spending a lot of money on restoration and then not keeping the boat for a considerable time for enjoyment. You can say the boat has had much replanking, but a buyer does not want rot in the planks. You can say the decks have been recanvased or epoxied, but the buyer does not expect decks to leak. The classic must be Ondina cost 75k spent 250K realised on sale 75K Some marques are known for deep inbuilt quality and will be desirable. But many so called classics of The Broads were built to capitalise in the shortest possible time and last a hire life of not too long in the case of wood and hence were not of the finest construction or materials. PS @ 200K they are having a laugh!
  11. Looked closely at the BoatShed pics. I think that all over winter cover may have suffered some condensation. The brightwork needs some work, around the helm it needs considerable work. It is a lovely looking boat but to convert her to a comfortable cruiser will require work and money. However you would end up with a very nice craft well capable of taking you round to Wells, Southwold, Orford etc. I would certainly want to know more about the engines and work done on them as the pictures do not reflect an indepth restoration.
  12. Maybe the Northern River System is fast approaching saturation in August.
  13. Not the best time of year to be selling but I bet Gillian Nahum would find her a home on The Thames. http://www.hscboats.co.uk/
  14. Much could revolve around the leases of the boatyard, sailing club etc. Depending on the length of such agreements the sale might go through in Lots with various buyers taking what is desirable to them. Brown's appear to be pushing the commercial aspect which I can not see going down well in certain quarters
  15. Being of an age when they were known as Radio Spares, I still use RS components when I need something fast, next day delivery, aways in stock not the cheapest but when you are in a hurry! The Hayter needed a new starter battery. Hayter dealer North Walsham about forty quid. Ebay twelve! I used to use these 12v 4 amp/ hr VRLA so that I could side mount them for system backup. In those days I bought direct from Fiaam for about five pounds 50p.
  16. The Broad, Sailing Club, Boatyard, Nature reserve. This makes interesting reading :- http://www.costar.co.uk/en/assets/news/2016/September-2016/Hickling-Broad-Estate-put-up-for-sale/ The last paragraph in particular
  17. With over one million members and income around £100 million it would be easy to raise that cash. I think it was 2005 they spent 2.8 million on aquisition of land at Arne (Dorset) Halvergate (suffolk) and Hesketh (Lancs) so £2.5 is not without precedence. And yet with all their income they still rattle their tin with some success at the door of the Lottery Heritage Fund. If you want to look at sinister governance, look no further.
  18. I will not go into detail but I will have nothing to do with facebook.
  19. Naturally there will always be people who try something and are hooked for life. You can say the same for golf, flying, skiing, almost anything but 50 years ago disposable income was less and there was not the choice of vacations and indeed hobbies that there is today. Times change and so does fashion and perceived desirability of activity and destination. There were loads of boat hire holidays not just the Broads but The Thames, Grt Ouse, Yorkshire Ouse all have seen decline. A night out was the local, look what has happened to pubs. Once the continental holiday fired up the grey drab British persona there was no going back, the sangria, paella, calamari and flowing wine under a blue sky is one hell of a team to beat.
  20. Not forgetting many many young people are absolutely strapped for cash if they attend University and leave with enormous dept. The other problem with the young is they will do a holiday once and move on to the next destination. Many have been all over the world by the time they are in their early thirties. This was something previous generations could not do unless extremely wealthy. My late father would rant how cheap flights for the masses had ruined "his" favourite parts of the Med.
  21. I am sure the investigation will take into account the time of night, what they were doing in the preceeding hours, where the witness was, even the fact that it was boaty carnival week. Let us let them get on with it and let the dogs lie until we get the official verdict because we don't know.
  22. If you are talking about the Archant publication that was sponsored by and had a forward by and history of Richardsons then the cover photo/artistic bit is looking East. Therefore it must be a Sunrise. I have a copy but cant find a "cover photo explanation"
  23. The original idea would be great but you know what would happen especially along the overcrowded South Coast. Some fly-by-nights would start blanket booking marina berths then putting them on the market for the summer and make a business out of it and chaos would probably be the result.
