  1. the best advice I have ever been given was aim to be about 15-30 minutes after the end of slack, if you hit the incoming tide around breydon bridge coming north, or the closed marina moorings headed south, you have pretty much nailed it, too early and you will fight the last of the ebb going out after you turn the corner, this assumes you are in a boat with suitable air draft of course, some boats still need to hit dead on low water to get under the bridges.
  2. last month i had a similar choice going the other way and decided to carry on the night before instead of trying the next morning, i punched the incoming tide across breydon, and got to the bridges 1 hour after slack, at this point there was only 8' on the gauges, but i did catch the flood up the bure. when I passed the upstream gauge at burgh castle it had read 9'
  3. actually clearance starts reducing as soon as low tide passes, the water may be rising yet the flow is still out, best bet is to phone the yacht station the day before and tell them your air draft, assure them you dont mind punching the tide in one direction, and they will advise the best times, i too would try and get down to stracey arms for overnight, as its a good 2 hours from acle.
  4. might be some good bargains for someone wanting a project boat
  5. yes please do, I think we do need to keep the other mast as it is also part of her history. and thank you very much for whoever donated it.
  6. so the proposal for day boats quotes 14 parking spaces, the proposal for houseboats quotes 14 parking spaces, etc, and each time the parking spaces are the same 14 spaces not cumulative like the planning department assume.
  7. Ah, so the broads number for Delight 1, though its not in the sequence as theoretically it should have been B71
  8. thanks, I think the model maker must have talked to people whose memories may not quite be as good as they could be. I will pass that and the other information on to him
  9. I have just heard back from a fellow modeller who is currently making a model of delight 1, he reports so it looks as though the mast was a parting gift to the new owner I wonder How many Yards would do the same when parting with a boat nowadays. this of course makes the mast we now have, to be part of the history of the boat and a HW original.
  10. Yes I am afraid I follow sport about as much as I would follow a skunk with halitosis
  11. its a perfect time to go shopping wen sport is on, the shops are lovely and quiet
  12. I dont believe so, there is a second ramp pointing the other way just a few hundred yars closer to the yacht station, there appears to be a gate leading to the grassed section before Bishops Bridge
  13. there is actually an opening and ramp down at the other end of the moorings
  14. it looks like it is the last bridge before new mills at the head of navigation.
  15. it didnt seem to be an exciting match, now remember I judge football matches by the amount of noise generated by my neighbours, and overall they were very quiet all the way through, with no big cheer at the end i assumed they hadnt won.(or even scored)
  16. it almost looks as if your dad nicked the plug out of hickling broad,to use as a mudweight
  17. I see from the first picture that in the 1970's she had a flat disc mudweight, I believe that is still down in the engine bay doing duty as trim ballast, I did use a small mudweight as a stern anchor that was down there during my last trip
  18. can we just strike it then and be done?
  19. Thanks for that wonderful bit of history Liz, the bracket I have made from aluminium is just to replace that bit of plastic, which I could not figure exactly how the mast stepped into, I doubt the mast will get regular use, but for trips such as the wooden boat show it will be a good place to tie the bunting, and as said, for navigating after dark it is essential, I am looking to replace the bulb with a low power LED version as it currently does not work. The choice really is Daves to make whether we keep a mast or not, I think its about options, with a bracket that works the option will be there for all who use her to make the choice., certainly it is a useful place for a navigation light, and to hang an NBN Burgee. If we do decide to make a new mast, I have a lovely piece of greenheart here that would do nicely, horrible stuff to work, but I have been using some outside for over 20 years with absolutely no preservative on it as a planter and it doesnt show a sign of decay.
  20. I do have some video, unfortunately wind noise has affected almost all of it, so I havent had a chance yet to post it. In other news, I did find Water Rails Mast, it was while looking at it that I noticed that the mast holding bracket was missing, its been replaced with what I can only guess is a bracket to indicate the high point of the boat, the mast isnt in that good a state, and I do intend building a new one sometime, but really before that we need a bracket to hold it, so over the last couple of days the measurements and ideas I had have been transforming into reality and a mast bracket has been fabricated from some aluminium sheet and angle. when I do look at making the new mast, I will be looking to re-use the old brasswork from the original, as that is just too pretty and would look nice cleaned up and on new timber.
  21. ooh dont remind me, I got 2 new front tyres last week, and totally forgot when I managed to power drift the car round a roundabout in the middle of canterbury, apparently the new front tyres are now scrubbed in, but didnt have the grip of the old near slicks, I just accelerated across the roundabout turning right and got squeal out of the tyres, normally I dont have enough power to break them loose, but that day I was in a bit of a hurry to take off from a standstill, and managed it. After rounding the roundabout the car behind overtook me and the two boy racers inside gave me a big thumbs up with a grin as wide as anything, apparently this old grandpa driving the volvo did good in their eyes.
  22. i am not going to wish you a good trip, you already had one of those.
  23. just thinking if you can get on the staithe section, the step down to the bank is less than if you moor further along which might be helpful for the pups.
