  1. I am a draughtsman, technically all my drawings get done in a shouty voice as we always use caps. its seen as quite normal when chatting on teams when someone types ther message in caps.
  2. last time i hired from Marthams, fogging happened after the boat arrived back and before staff went aboard, and again after the staff had finished before the customer went on board..
  3. I think water levels must be low, I saw 8 foot mentioned at beccles old bridge the other day
  4. I used to go to a wonderful chinese takeaway whose rating was suddenly dropped due to an invasion of cockroaches from a neighbouring premisis on the day of the inspectors visit, they were actually shut down over this occurrence, while the next door kebab shop remained open. needless to say the two businesses did not get on well with each other after that.
  5. what was the weed like down there, last year when I went through, it wasnt great and I got tangled a few times
  6. I can remember driving in Wales, one trip we had to do a 15 mile detour to get up the hill opposite harlech castle, it later transpired we would not have got through with my parcel van (converted to camper) as a standard transit got stuck between the walls half way up.
  7. and this is another reason for our name and shame policy, shame on the EDP for not fact checking their content
  8. hows Chloe Jane, Afloat yet Dave, I suppose if Travels with Geordie can replace a couple of Garboard planks in a couple of days, a chine plank is no problem.
  9. best I can offer from water rail is a kettle full.
  10. to get back to the original topic, I have had no issues with cooking aboard any boats, hire or private, I have always managed to cook cheese and bacon turnovers, and even home made bread aboard, sometimes things can take a little longer, or need turning half way through, but the end result has always been good
  11. agreed but, by reporting it you allow the BA to ask that it be mentioned as a foolish act to do during the handover by the boatyards, even as an anecdotal example, eg along with the warnings about not reversing toward a swimmer to pick them up.
  12. Thats also where I met john Ryan, Author of Captain Pugwash, who lived at the top by the castle.
  13. I dunno, it seemed to attract the wasps no end, my most vivid memory was at the pub halfway down the steps from rye castle as we always had a ploughmans there, and there were always hordes of wasps.
  14. run it along the deck like water rail, I give the pulleys on WR drop of oil every trip out to keep them happy, mounted there its easy to see any issues, and as easy to fix them
  15. the pleasure boat inn has announced a pop up bar outside starting today (refurbishment inside has taken longer than planned)
  16. You Might even be lucky with PH bridge Repps at low water yesterday evening was at 0.26m by my reckoning, thats nearly 6'6", at 5.49am today it was at .29, which might be a shade over 6'4" might be worth a looksee even if its under and straight back just to prove you can.
  17. Lol I can remember being sat outside pubs with that rare treat fizzy lemonade, and those pubs that did serve food it was always a ploughmans, dry bread, cheese and limp lettuce
  18. perhaps the boat jumble at Beccles during the wooden boat show in a couple of weekend
  19. sounds like you need someone who has some lying around, Marthams maybe? or do you want new
  20. and the majority of the sailboat for hire can get above there too, its a great place to sail.
  21. Ah, Name not showing on google earth streetview- Ah - I see it now - Smoggy, you are a very naughty boy.
  22. Not sure I get that, a random shell garage on the A491 near Birmingham?
  23. at best on lads week we have had 3 jewel of lights line abreast on the bure (while BA was taking the photos), at just a couple of foot apart, but the only thing passing between boats would have been a selection of sweets being shared, and though it may have shocked an oncoming boat, we had left them plenty of river to pass. I think aside from Breydon, the only other time was when Griff wanted to borrow a sharp knife from BA to prepare his evening meal for the crew. Certainly no crew transfers while under way.
  24. I have experienced this at Marthams, though the circumstances were slightly different, Marthams yard staff do all the cleaning and preparation, and as they only have a small fleet and stagger the turnovers they manage well. One trip I was asked to wait while they did an extra deep clean as the previous hirer had had a dog and left wet doggy smells behind, - not a problem, they kept me well informed. the other time it was a case of they had rushed to get the boat launched for my arrival, as I was the first to hire out Jayne 2, Jayne 1 had been taken out of service and they had completely rebuilt the topsides of the spare Jayne hull they had, to get her in service, All I had to do was wait until thy had fitted minor essentials like the front windows, curtain wires, toilet roll holders etc, the catalogue photos were taken just moments before I boardedthe boat went in 2 hours before I took her out, I had a short snagging list on my return, simple things, like a nut falling off the alternator mounting bolt (temporarily replaced with a cable tie by me), but I had communicated the gist of the list to their bridge pilot and when I arrived at the yard the team were waiting ready to leap into action. on another occasion a cupboard door decided to part company with the strip inside the hinges mounted to, this was once again reported as I came back under potter heigham bridge, upon arrival at the yard, within 10 minutes the door and hinges had been removed and whisked back to the workshops for repair (regluing) a very slick operation indeed.
  25. Griff, If all the hard work, sweat and tears you put in were done by a boatyard, I am sure the additional costs would easily exceed the budgets the syndicate boats have, its a matter of choice, hard graft or pay someone else. As part of another type of share scheme - the buddy share of Water Rail, where running costs are apportioned among the buddies, I would expect to be asked to set aside some time to assist in general maintenance and be happy to do so. in fact, After The Wooden Boat weekend, I have a mast to take home and strip down and revarnish, I currently have some more cupboard catches to bring with me that I have produced on the lathe, which will be fitted once i arrive, little jobs but its the little jobs that pop the cherry on the icing of the cake so to speak. plus in addition I am happy to tackle some of the maintenance tasks while actually aboard. for me its one of the fun parts of boat sharing.
