clearly in the past the northern waters would have dropped just as fast as the southern ones are, so this clearly highlights the fact that something is slowing down the natural drainage from the northern side I do wonder about the depths on the lower Bure at low tide, its a shame as if it had been high season with the normal numbers of boats, then dozen of boats running aground would have bolstered the argument that it was due to a lack of dredging, but since we are in the winter season, not many will be travelling the lower bure. boats running aground would have highlighted the lack of dredging by the Broads Authority (enough to maintain the navigation) it would be interesting to note the speed of the ebb at Great Yarmouth. this does however tend to point the finger away from the new bridge at Great Yarmouth as if that was holding the water back then the southern side would not have seen such low tides.

in places this lack of trimming back is affecting the boaters too, a large portion of the quay heading along rockland dyke wasnt trimmed last year rendering a few hundred yards of mooring as unavailable because of nettles right to the quay heading making it impossible to get off to attach the ropes - some people are taking measures such as carrying cheap cordless strimmers and clearing sections for themselves which benefits both fishermen and boaters.

I have seen both the anglers with a huge trolley full of gear dragging them great distances along the banks of the Yare, and similarly I have seen fishermen walking along a river with just a rod and a bag, occasionally flicking a line into the water, then moving on. I did wonder at the sheer quantity of gear that some anglers seem to need (ok one time there must have been a match on as there were dozens of anglers with the trolleys of gear), but as a non fisher I dont really understand I guess. also the one that seems strange to me are those that turn up with huge long poles that seem to reach almost to the opposite bank, who then when a boat comes along have to retract the poles to allow passage- its really amusing though when there are fishermen both sides seeming preferring the opposite side to where they are seated. My only ask as a boater is that fishermen make themselves visible more, I try and move more to the middle when there are fishermen, but some seem to delight in wearing camoflage and using rods that are invisible against the bank, so my apologies if I havent moved to the centre of the river in every instance as its more than probable I didnt see you.

not really as while it would hold the tides out, it would also restrict water leaving the system during times of flood even worse than we have already recently seen, and there are concerns that the water would just make its way under the spit of land containing a large portion of Great Yarmouth and wash out under there causing the land to erode into the sea.

I am sure that on top of all the recent flooding certain questions are surely bound to be asked whether the flood alleviation program is working?

my newest car was the lada riva, and that was 5 years old when I got it motorbikes, now lets see if I can remember, peugeot 103 moped, kawasaki z250c, yamaha 100cc, honda c90, honda 400 superdream, cx 500, BMW r80RS. I think thats all the bikes though maybe not in that order.

surely the problem with the salt surges is that if the incoming salt surge cant properly drain away, the next incoming tide pushes it further upriver, then the next and the next, if the bure freely drained, then the salt would get to a point, then be flushed out, and the next incoming tide it would get to the same point and be flushed out, rather than the current salt surge being pushed further upstream with every incoming tide. Just my thoughts I know, the BA are using your theory as a reason not to dredge, but (and I dont know this for a fact) were the salt surges as bad or worse when the bure was dredged?

my first car was a vw variant (air cooled estate with the engine under the loor in the back) my second was a mk1, and 2 1300/1600 escort (a bitsa gar, bitsa this one and bits a that one cobbled together from 3 cars. then we had the v4 transit parcel van, followed by a lada riva, then a bedford camper, a vw jetta, and then a string of volvos- 340's 440's 850's 940, v70, v40 and finally my current v50- along the way I also had quite a few motorbikes.

my transit parcel van had the blue plastic sun visor- half way up the windscreen (just the right spot to keep the sun out of the drivers eyes - I remember it vividly, as when a lorry flicked a stone up into the windscreen shattering it, the sun visor held enough glass together to wrap around my head when it hit me.

lovely carvings, I used to do celtic knotwork on wooden bowls.

It was a most enjoyable evening- noisy, and hot, but enjoyable.

The plan is being able to scan a part of the boat, bring it into cad and design a part that perfectly fits.

The really good scanners are over £1000, but this was a sub £300 model. This is a printout of the scanned carved duck, at 25% full size.
