  1. It is probably wise to close Breydon in very thick mist. I have crossed in thick mist that came down when I was half way across it can be a bit hairy up the Burgh Castle end as all the posts seem the same colour in the mist and the channel does wander somewhat there. Also it is very easy in thick mist to wander off the fairway elsware and once you do that, you are lost, with no posts to guide you. What I will say whilst we are on the subject is, if you do go aground on Breydon, reverse immediately and go backwards, the reverse way you went on the mud. I have seen it so many times when boats have gone aground and tried to power straight through the mud only to push further aground.
  2. I always treat myself to the lovely Cromer crabs when I visit there too.
  3. I feel very honoured today. Whilst going downstream on the Bure about a mile upstream of Thurne Mouth something flew over the top of the boat. Yes, it was the elusive Bittern. I would have possibly expected it around the Hickling area but there it was in large life. To make the afternoon complete I had a couple of pints of Lacons Falcon in the Lion at Thurne and they were superb.
  4. AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH! STOP IT NOW!........ Jingly jangly music on my radio, Bing Crosby with his nuts on the fire. I can't remember the last time I saw a reindeer pulling a sleigh past my house. Bah! Humbug! :)
  5. Fifteen quid! You got a really good deal there. Good luck to you mate!
  6. I can't see how that would change the polarity. Best of luck mate, let us al know how you get on. I take it that you tested the voltage at the battery terminals. If it is ok there then follow the wiring through. You should have a main fuse and then on to a distribution box as in house wiring. Test the input there and see what happens. Check if all outgoing circuits give the correct reading.
  7. If you had a short a sub fuse or the main fuse would have blown, provided you have the proper fuses in place. Otherwise, no idea. Has anybody other than you been working on your electrics?
  8. I have just cooked some Roys' "Top Quality Pork Sausages" £6.25 per kilo and £1.25 per pack of four. I am a bit of a connoisseur of a decent banger and was quite impressed by the flavour, quality and spicing of this product. There was very little fat exuded into the pan from the sausages and the texture was great.
  9. Helen: Its not so much that I am worried about being bitten by the little blighters as I rarely get bitten by mozzies, it is more that they wake me up at night when they attack my ears. The horse flies are a different matter but they do not like being swiped with a towel, however, they do not get into my cabin at night.
  10. Dunno about hot but I had hailstones as big as peas in Wroxham this morning. I was having a post breakfast nap and when it woke me I thought somebody was throwing stones at the boat.
  11. Mozzies are one of my pet hates on the Broads. Why do the bu****s head for your ears? I have lost count of the times I have been awoken from a lovely sleep by these little blighters landing on my ears in the middle of the night. I daren't use insect spray in my cabin as it tends to affect my chest so I have to go on a mozzie hunt with a torch and a handful of towel to squash the little blighters. Otherwise the Broads is ok.
  12. My condolences to the dead and injured people and their families. The thing is that the idiot that perpetrated this attack did not hit the people who were responsible for all the other attacks. He maimed and possibly killed perfectly innocent people. His actions have diverted police recourses away from looking for the real perpetrators of the atrocities. In effect he has helped IS.
  13. Called in there yesterday and the beer was great, the service was great. Keep it up Rick! Thingy.
  14. Deep thankymost for the warnylode. Thingy.
  15. OMG! We are back on the subject of sheep! You lot really do worry me, especially as I like to wear a white fleecy jacket occasionally. Could be dangerous around closing time.
  16. I wonder what an insurance company would make of a claim caused by to a beaver chewing a hole in a woodie?
  17. Wives: I bear no responsibility for any comments on this thread regarding women. I think I may be in trouble here. Help!
  18. That is quite understandable. After all, and I could stand to be corrected by anybody who knows better, No other pubs away from rivers have showers. Keep your eye on the ball Rick, a shower does not make much money and that is what you are in business for. See you soon. Thingy.
  19. Thanks for that, the adverts gave the impression that it was not so. I will bear that in mind when using the glue in future.
  20. Nice one Viking. Yes, I have had the same experience myself. Grendel: it is interesting that you have found that the expanded stuff is not as strong, thanks for the information. This is the first time that I have used Gorilla so all comments, plus or minus are welcome.
  21. I came home a couple of days ago from a night out with the other old fossils and looked at my pride and joy (boat) on my driveway. Damn it! The curtains had fallen down. On inspection the block of hardwood I had stuck with Araldite many years ago on the cabin side to screw my curtain hooks into had fallen off. On a recommendation of a friend of mine I bought some Gorilla Glue and stuck it back on again. It is quite the strangest glue I have ever used. It expands with curing and squidges out of the joint and into any voids in the joint. It would probably have many uses in a marine environment when sticking rough surfaces together. The manufacturers claim it is waterproof. I would envisage that if a neat job is needed then masking tape covering the squidge area around the joint. Hope this information is useful to any other destroy it yourself bods on this website
  22. The prices are quite comparable to The Dog just across the fields. If people want sit down food that is what you pay. When comparisons are made with Burger King just think before comparing, you can't get a beer in Burger King. It is possible to pay much more than these prices on the Broads as we all know well.
  23. Ideal to deal with a load of yobbos who spend the night keeping everybody awake. Just think what that could do for a hangover.
  24. I really do not know where the recommendation came from. When I built my trailer from Indispension parts the shop staff that supplied the parts told me that I could not get a braked suspension for that weight of suspension as it was not recommended to have brakes on that weight of trailer. The trailer is well within my car's towing capacity and the car has big wide tyres and as I said it has ABS. I consider myself a very experienced trailer driver and I don't push my luck and drive according to road conditions and as I said, I keep well back from the vehicle in front. With regards to trailer maintenance I check my bearings and indeed, the whole trailer, at the end of the season for play and adjust when necessary. I replaced them last Autumn as a couple of times the previous year water got into the bearings due to accidental dunking and they were sounding a bit rough when I spun the wheels. My trailer is a break back design so usually the bearings are not wetted but accidents do happen. Even if bearings are regularly wetted they are so cheap nowadays on fleabay they can be changed at the end of each season for peanuts if you do the job yourself. Just tap the old ones out with a punch and push the new ones in with a vice. Make sure you push the outer rings in right to the shoulder in the hub. Whatever you do, do not try to wind the bearings in with the retaining nut as the new bearing will be damaged. Being a bit of a belt and braces bod I would much rather do a couple of hours maintenance each Autumn on my driveway than be a hazard parked on the side of a motorway with a sick or dead trailer. Thingy.
