  1. There must be something very specific behind this. To me, hiring to a solo hirer is a safer bet, because it is less likely that they have not done some sort of boating before, unlike many multiple member crews, many of whom have no regard for the risks involved, as seen in the number who don’t even use the lifejackets that have been provided free of charge. In fact; let’s consider an extreme; if a solo hirer actually had some sort of RYA certification, proving their experience, would they still not be able to hire the same boat that could be hired to a completely novice crew?
  2. I’m happy harvesting free energy.
  3. Got the wrong kind of lever that won’t fit a shiny new knob.
  4. Guys worthy of respect! Just hope I never need them!
  5. Welcome Simon. Look forward to seeing you out and about on your new boat.
  6. Scotland deserved that win because England simply didn’t turn up until the last 10 minutes. It looks like this will be Ireland’s tournament!
  7. Even if they take all these preventative measures, you know what the excuse will be when they still can’t open the bridges; like the leaves in the autumn, or the snow in winter, it will be ‘the wrong kind of heat’ in the summer!
  8. I was so pleased when I got my first mobile phone 20 odd years ago, and realised what a bad decision it was soon after when it rang for the first time, as I realised my ability to escape from the world and his wife was now gone forever. One of the reasons I enjoy the Broads so much, is that 90% of it seems to have no phone coverage. The ability to escape restored!
  9. Fun! But also somewhat disappointing! From your title I was honestly expecting to see someone having attached wings to a Bounty 37!
  10. PastorsDayOff. Sovereign Grace. 2 plus dog. Fri/Sat
  11. Sorry I steered the topic off to road type stuff, which actually I try to avoid for health reasons. The point has been made already that every hobby has expense, and you pay as much as you can afford for your enjoyment and in this case your anticipated usage of the Broads. For me, buying a boat, knowing how expensive it would be, was a health investment, the need for relaxation. It could cost twice as much and I would still think it worth it. ,
  12. Automatic chewed up the other 12! I like my cogs shifted for me!
  13. I could argue that we slow them down, allowing them to use less fuel, and creating less wash, and thus making them more environmentally friendly.
  14. Forget the road tax! How much petrol do you get through? Sure I don’t argue green cridentials either, but I got rid of my diesel disco because I only got 20MPG out of it!
  15. If we keep with the DVLA arguement then sailboats with engines should pay no toll, because they’re hybrids. Can but hope!
  16. This is where I envy those with an enclosed wheelhouse!
  17. Already given the boat a jolly good jet wash. Sails go back on next month.
  18. Welcome Waterglade. The Broads is truly a restful and relaxing place for boating, but I’ve enjoyed plenty of boating off the Devon and Cornwall coast having originally come from Plymouth and spending many years back there before ending up near the Broads again. Boats never far away.
  19. Makes perfect sense. And thank you for the welcome.
  20. Thank you donnygeoff for being so honest. And sorry if my post upset you. I feel for you. In truth, I found the trip to Woodbridge that started my initial post off an emotional experience because I miss my perants who got me into boating, and the time I spent with them there. The memories however remain, and for that I am truly thankful.
  21. We’ve all changed from when we first stepped aboard a boat. I might think that I’m five, I might even act as if I’m five (my wife and first mate would agree), but my body soon reminds me, that many many years have passed since then! Still love the boats though!
  22. Don’t remember too many boats in the village with three corners. Oh it’s so sad that I know that!
  23. I haven’t read these books for years. I think I need to get some copies, especially now living in Coot Club country and having a boat on the Broads. Might help with the adventure.
