  1. Enough throttle will get it through..... In answer to the original question, moor up and walk under with a tape measure if not sure, if the gauge says 8'8" you will get through for sure, I have got under at 8'8" when the gauge has said 8'2" and had clearance, I can't be sure the BA have not changed the gauges since hence the tape measure suggestion but I doubt they have.
  2. Not if I go past! They only closed breydon because I opened the throttle too quickly, who needs fog!
  3. I've still not worked out how the intake of nicotine or the hand to mouth habit is supposed to help stop smoking, when I gave up the hardest bit was not rolling a fag as much as not smoking it. As for the contents of cheap ebay bought chinese sourced chemicals exactly how can anyone say they are safe? I'm glad I gave up 20 years ago and don't like the idea of vaping in pubs and such and find it as annoying as passive smoking, that said if a pub gets the ashtrays out when the door gets bolted I don't mind as long as I'm still getting served, it's their house then.....
  4. If there's nothing in the oil big enough to read a part number off it'll be fine.......
  5. I'm more interested where Lionel came from, bettyswollocks I can understand (although not this spring so far) but we don't need an emoticon for bettyswollocks! (could use the head scratching emoticon upside down I suppose).
  6. I don't see any reason to go for a fancy electric bog as a bit of pumping is even idiot proof enough for me and keeps you in mind to use it sparingly, no battery power needed either.
  7. I have an old rm69 and it works great, the handle broke so went to the local marina and saw them taking an older jabsco off a boat with knackered pump so managed to blag a handle, better seat, and better bowl for free. A crappy happy chappy I am!
  8. I guess you found the name change bit then Betty.
  9. If you click on your username in the top right corner and go to account settings and username you should be able to change it yourself.
  10. To register you need to look up environment agency anglian region as they are the nav authority for the gt.ouse, don't expect anything more than blind incompetence though as they make the BA look professional You will need a boat safety certificate for the boat ( they last 4 years), it's worth joining goba.org.uk for local info and advice and they have some good members only moorings, I would suggest a cruiser you can do a few nights on comfortably as you are on the ugliest part of the river where you are (no offence but it's just a big straight ditch), the best is from earith upstream through to barford, at least your end of the river rarely floods. Quite a few of the bits in the haynes book mentioned are done on the gt.ouse. Goba have a quiet but useful forum for members. (great ouse boating association)
  11. Don't let the gauge at ludham put you off, moor up and walk under with a tape measure on the lowest corner before turning back as you will likely still have about 5-6 inches extra, it's handy when there is a walkway both sides of the bridge.
  12. Watching people sitting quietly having a polite discussion is never anywhere near as entertaining as watching people get their knickers in a twist over something, you are right the statistics do speak for themselves.
  13. I think you will find that was a pub not a shop!
  14. Don't ask Robin about upgrades, that is not nearly enough!
  15. I'd agree with that, the main word being ourselves, I'm big enough and ugly enough to play with matches and pointy things without blaming someone else if I hurt myself doing it, as long as I don't hurt anyone else doing it what is the problem. We spend far too much time telling folk "you can't do that you might get hurt", just tell them "if you do that you might get hurt" and let them decide.

    Refit

If you just got the boat and it all works I would hold back on too many upgrades for the first season, boats can always throw unexpected expenses at you and they may be the ones that stop you using it till sorted, use the boat for a while first then you will prioritise where to spend first, you may get used to some bits and leave them as they are. It's so easy to get carried away with a new toy. And make sure you know if your gauges and senders are european or american resistances, the figures are in the asap catalogue for reference, looking at your avatar I'm guessing bmc engine and european gauges.
  17. The keys several times, 50 miles up the A11 and realise they are still at home! That's why it's good to have a spare stashed somewhere on the boat accessable from outside.

    Rope Cuttet

I think it was pbo that did a rope cutter test with a prop in a tank and various different ropes and cables to see which performed best, it may save you a dunking sometime.
  19. Diesel heater! And a good check of the water system so you know what you are drinking.
  20. "A letter has been sent to the BA pointing out the dangers and I reproduce it below with permission. " Yeah yeah copied from 'another forum' but you get the jist, if I was to do the same I would leave the name off too, can you confirm permission or not please JM before this becomes an inter forum squabble. I too am of the view when something is posted on open forum it becomes open knowledge and fair game as long as no one else's credit is taken.
  21. It's even easier if you are heading up the bure, check the calendar and if the schools are out turn back it's not worth it, half the pubs put the prices up for summer and you won't get a mooring.
  22. Spring tides will give best clearance at LW as well as least clearance at HW, average HW means sod all and should never really be used and isn't on proper charts, they use LAT which is lowest astronomical tide as chart datum, the weather can make it lower than this but only on exceptional circumstances. A northerly or easterly wind will generally give higher levels as it pushes the tidal bump around the coast quicker, low pressure also lifts the water, a southerly wind can hold the tide back and give lower than predicted tides. Also factor in BA shows fixed bridges at yarmouth the same as haven bridge the same where ordanance survey show haven as higher at MHWS so they do not all sing from the same sheet, I trust OS more than BA, BA never even got close to helping us win a major world war. BA tide tables do not use chart datum as zero as normal rational people do so be aware of the differences. I'm not about to give any actual figures to any of the above as I've been in the pub too long and not going to be liable to your roof damage..... P.S. I hope even a small percentage of this makes sense, even good spelling will be a bonus to me!
  23. I would rather read about it in the edp that anywhere else as it will be sooo much more exciting in the edp than it will in real life, it will be like most peoples facebook profile.
  24. I share the view of Donnygeoff, I'm all for taking risks if you choose to do so and accept the outcome as your own doing and take what fate deals you, I also enjoy reading the darwin awards. I don't see messing about on a medium we can't stand on, we can't breathe, and can't always survive the temperatures as being the safest of hobbies anyway but we still do it, I'm a poor swimmer but rarely wear a lifejacket even at sea, my choice/my risk/my loss when I make the wrong choice. And from an anglers point of view after the event the river may be well ground baited, doesn't help me as I don't fish.
