  1. First time we hired GA it wouldn't go under Wroxham bridge. That year Connoisseur were putting blue barrels of water on their boats to get them under the bridge and back to the yard. The next hire and we were lucky, not only Wroxham bridge, but Potter bridge as well. Don't suppose it goes under that often now. The real benefit for me of the dual steer over centre cockpit is when it rains. Put a waterproof coat on and stay outside steering. With centre cockpit you are forever putting the roof up and down when it drizzles.
  2. Thinking back now it may have been N742, It was Golden Anchor we hired. Certainly a very good yard.

  5. I noticed last week that she was sailing about an inch higher in the water than normal. Wasn't sure if it was the patina being cleaned off, or the bonded locker being emptied, or perhaps it was a combination of both!
  6. Was surprised and very disappointed to see that my local Sainsburys has removed the plastic screens between the self service tills!!!! I know legally they are no longer required, but having made the investment why not keep them until the infection rate falls?
  7. So far I'm treating "freedom day" as if it didn't exist. Still got my N95 masks distributed around various pockets and in the car always at the ready to be used. Hand sanitiser is now a permanent fixture. I quite like the fact I haven't had a cold or the flu in 15 months. But more importantly the reminders are still there of how this thing hasn't gone away. I have a friend who is self isolating after having been in contact with someone who has Covid, despite being double jabbed. His partners son is having a very bad time with Covid and he was single jabbed when he got it. My local pub is still asking people to sign in or use the app for contact tracing and all the staff are still wearing masks. Some of the customers aren't, but I feel it is the least you can do to show the staff some respect working in these hot conditions and still wearing masks. I hope I'm proved wrong, but I think that as one or two stop wearing masks, others will think why are they bothering and ditch the masks as well. I'll be one of the last to stop wearing a mask. Todays figures of nearly 100 deaths should be a warning to all.
  8. Worth bearing in mind if you can purchase of Amazon, they have Amazon lockers in a couple of places in Hoveton, I know there's some at Oulton Broad and I'm sure there would be others dotted around The Broads as well.
  9. Its a very strange effect to witness. Basically the incoming tide tries to hold back the outgoing tide which flows out over the top of the incoming tide, until it reaches a point where the incoming tide is high enough to start pushing the current back up stream. Once that happens the rate at which the tide rises tends to slow down dramatically.
  10. I don't think any mooring can be guaranteed beyond the 12 month annual mooring agreement unless you own the freehold. The marina where I moor is currently for sale. New owners may come in and spend a fortune and then increase the mooring fees, only time will tell. Clive's mooring sounds ideal for the right person, my only concern would be arriving late at night and settling in and disturbing the people above. I guess the issue with a whole boatshed is that you pay the going rate for the whole place, rather than by the foot. At 35ft long it becomes quite an expensive mooring for me, but if your boat is closer to 45ft then I think it is probably quite competative given the type pf mooring.
  11. Polkeys Mill mooring was installed by the BA about 10 or so years ago, maybe a little more. The high timbers were installed at that time and are there to stop boats riding over the edge on a high tide. Prior to that there was no mooring there. It's an interesting place to stop because you can explore the history of the various different types of water pumps that have been used over the years to drain the marshes from the wind pump, steam pump to the more modern electric pump.     Some of the many reasons why I'm more likely to slip through the bridge at first light or even late in the evening and then go and find a Broad to mud weight in for the night. Would much rather navigate the bridge in the dark with nav lights than a Summer lunchtime!!

    There seems to be some strange logic at play here. If there's only one pilot, he may be sure that there won't be another pilot coming the other way, but won't he still be checking anyway for any boats coming the other way? Might as well check for another pilot whilst he's at it, and likewise whilst only one boat can pass at one time, that passage is a small part of the overall journey from one side to the other for the pilot. I have known there to be two pilots on duty at very busy times. If most of the boats are going in one direction, there may not be a return boat to bring back through which means walking back from the opposite side. On such occasions from the pilot stepping onboard, to walking back and stepping on board the next boat can easily be 7-8 minutes. This can lead to queues of boats forming and milling around waiting to get on the pilot moorings. On such occasion two or even three pilots would be useful, but I guess the number is actually dictated by what else needs to be done in the boat yard. None of the pilots are dedicated solely to pilotage duties.
  14. I would assume if it is an AST that there is a months deposit paid and at least a months rent paid up front. Sadly not normally as easy as just walking away, not without losing money anyway. I think irrespective of whether they would have taken the flat if they'd seen it, your now beyond that, so they need to work out a solution with the landlord or take it to environmental health.
  15. It's not so much about whether it was misrepresented, but more about whether it is fit for human habitation. I'm assuming you have taken the flat on an AST? If so you can only end it early if you surrender the lease with agreement of your landlord otherwise you remain liable for the rent and other bills, however under the terms of the AST the landlord should keep the flat in a suitable condition and fit for habitation. Your first course of action is surrendering the lease if your landlord is agreeable. If they are not then the second course of action is to report it to the environmental health department, mentioning that is your planned course of action might change your landlords mind if he refuses to allow you to surrender the lease. Be aware however that due to Covid environmental health are not making visits in person and everything is taking a lot longer than normal.

  18. Seems most people are more interested in the video, than reading the editorial that accompanied it. To be fair you don't even need to click on the see more link to be able to read the first line as highlighted, Hemsby Broads Rescue was paged at 20:58 last night by Humber Coastguard to assist with the evacuation of a family of six who were in harm’s way due their hire vessel running aground just east of Reedham. Due to tidal conditions and the position of the vessel it was not possible to either recover the vessel or leave the family on board. Three crew members were put onboard the casualty vessel to provide care and safety advice to the family. The remaining crew manned the rescue boat and ferried the family, three at a time, back to the Reedham RV point. The family were met by a member of Gorleston Coastguard who were also on scene at the RV and monitoring the casualty vessel. The family once reunited arranged transport to Acle where they were to spend the remainder of the night. Once all six members of the family were safely evacuated the crew on board the vessel secured it ready for recovery by the hire firm at high tide and were picked up by the rescue boat and stood down. Our thanks to Gorleston Coastguard for their assistance and the crew both on the boat and at the RV point for a well-executed operation. Hemsby Broads Rescue returned to base in the early hours and prepared the equipment for the next call. See less
  19. It might help to look at some useful facts first. The Facebook page says that they were paged at 20:58 which is when it was still light. Since it takes them some time to scramble and get the rescue services there it would have been dark by the time they arrived. Low water was also at 23:44 in Reedham last night, so given that they had a problem some time before 20:58 when the rescue service was paged they probably got stranded 3 to 4 hrs before low water. There is a big rise and fall in that area. Anything else at this stage will be mere speculation and best left to the inane comments section on Faceache.

  22. My experience is that about 65% of the flow goes straight down the Waveney with the rest going into the Cut. It is less noticeable when the tide is flooding. If you look at The BA depth chart for the Cut, the layout of the rivers and Cut helps to explain why. When the Waveney is ebbing there is less resistance for the water to enter the Cut as it is virtually straight ahead, but the width and depth of the main river encourages the lions share to go that way. When the rivers are flooding the water has more of a turn to enter the Cut at the Reedham end and there is also a bit of a bar that can be seen across the entrance. The deeper water section I think is caused by the opposing currents that are seen at this end as the Cut drains into the Yare when it is ebbing. As you turn out or into the Cut at the Reedham end you will often see a whirlpool effect of opposing currents, whereas at the Haddiscoe end all you see if a merging, or diverging of the current depending on the tide direction. https://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0035/199457/DEPTH__Haddiscoe-Cut.pdf
  23. Not strictly true. The New Cut from the Haddiscoe end to Reedham will always follow the current on the Lower Waveney and Lower Yare. The rivers do not equalise along the Cut. So if you are approaching Haddiscoe on a falling tide you can either go straight down The Lower Waveney with the tide under you, or you can go down The Cut with the tide under you and turn right at the end and keep the tide under you all the way down to Breydon. Put simply if the lower Waveney and Yare are ebbing the flow along the Cut will be from Haddiscoe towards the Reedham end. If the lower Waveney and Yare are flooding then the flow will be from the Reedham end towards Haddiscoe.

    I think it's worth pointing out that in many places social distancing doesn't just occur at the front of house, but in the kitchen as well. For some places it is not possible to bring the full staff back yet, and therefore reduced kitchen capacity means longer wait times and slower service. Bear with them, it is far from ideal for anyone.
