  1. Totally brilliant. Class answer. You win the forum
  2. Sometimes I think it’s the lack of information on the capacity of the boats battery bank. when I was sailing, I had an instrument that told me state of charge, how many hours left in the bank as well as current draw and how long to recharge. Batteries last a lot longer than most think and a good run to next mooring sorts that out. same with hot water, just go easy and you shouldn’t run out
  3. Good point. What ever happened to the wooden dipstick?
  4. Hi, Is there any problem inserting an inline silencer on a BMC 1.8? just noticed mine has not got one but just a downhill run to a small flat then out.
  5. Very good answers all and I now have a better understanding of the situation. And here’s my but. The newbie hirers two away from us wasn’t impressed and later while walking the dog decided Acle would be a better bet. Now I love the tea rooms there and the line for Lathams was silly so there really was not much to keep me there and spend. Potter is a bit bleak at times and as someone once said it was a destination once now you just pass through. The Broads are going to need all the friends it can get in the coming months as the downturn hits and government funds dry. I live and work a 150 miles away and yet hardly anyone I work with knows the Broads exists. Ask about the Lake District however. Cut backs and law changes are worked on by popular consent so a few million shaved off the EA budget for flood defence, a few mill off the BA budget or maybe allow Railtrak to keep those swing bridges closed to improve journey times of thousands who’s going to argue our case? A bit of an off topic rant but we have got to open the Broads arms wide but not just to bird watchers and anglers but to boaters in the form of better and more moorings and facilities because the other interest groups will. Sorry 😐
  6. I must admit to starting the engine and letting it warm up to operating temp only because if the engine thermostat fails closed then it’s going to over heat very fast and that could cause very expensive damage. on the other hand, if it fails open then the engine never heats up but I can still motor on. But I must insist boat safety comes before residents comfort as long as one does not take the mick out of it
  7. Hi all, First of all, not a moan. I just can't. Still got that glow from being part of the picture but.. I was taught never to turn off the engine until your fully moored. So, a nice cruise down to Potter ( caring about diesel usage for the first time) figuring that the massed ranks would use the BA moorings so i decided to stop in the first set of quiet moorings. All good. Pulled up at the end, The Enemy jumps out with the lines and I note that there are no mooring posts so i get the ronds. (spelling?) and jump out to join her. I take the lines, she jumps back on board and i start setting out the mooring. No sooner I start I hear a whistling from the opposite bank, ignoring this I set the bow rope. Mrs Cheesey then draws my attention to a geezer on the other bank waving and making cutting actions across his throat and shouting "Engine" I saw the sign on the bank and I was fully aware of my responsibilities but I was not moored properly and I'd only been stopped less than five minutes. But the mrs complied to keep the peace leaving me pondering. Next time do I ignore him and finish the job? Stop the engine as soon as? Tell him come and have a go if he thinks his hard enough? or my favorite, just go around in circles in front of his shack until he goes mad. over to you.
  8. If staying on the broads and not going to sea then a holding tank a must. Stern mooring is a thing so is hard landings, worth thinking about the bits that stick out. Shore power helps in lots of ways and I would have it installed. And I have done for both my sea vessel and my new inland boat. Expect around 500 to get it fitted. This is why I picked an ex hire. The basics are there already.
  9. The bits! Had a wild time on my beta marine Engine cleaning the heat exchanger and more importantly keeping it water tight due to really rubbish access. Now I change the impeller every season
  10. As a side note, I also switchEd off the 12volts at the main switch so nothing was drawing power (had no bilge pump, manual) and connected a multi meter to the terminals. Found a high reading in micro volts. Turns out the alternator was allowing power to back flow which would energise the engine at rest and to those anodes. New alternator stopped that
  11. Had my sail boat on the Medway in a marina that dried out between tides. The boat hulls made a sort of lake in the mud in which our boats sat. it seem a boat nearby or even the pontoons earth return was faulty or corroded but my prop and anodes just vanished in 6 months. So I boughta galvanic isolator that went in line with shore power cable and never had a problem again
  12. ....and one can only hope for a mooring space. Had great food there once but a bit like wroxham, Just passing
  13. Thanks all. You never let me down. Yet😀
  14. Hi all. Pretty soon me and the Enemy are going to head towards Acle for the first time as a privateer. Way back when there was plenty of mooring spaces both sides of the river. I know BA are working on the area that was the shop but how is the other bank for mooring non hire tub? yours peeringly at the map. Cheesey
  15. Excuse me for butting in but back in the day I was a 360 excavator driver and I was tasked to clear a drainage ditch by a popular footpath. said ditch was large, full of weed and tons of wild life. And full of sediment. so much so that the water table was rising in the farmers field and the area was in danger of reverting back to marsh. no matter how I explained to joe public that this feature was in no way natural, served a function the grief I got was bad. point is over time people have been conditioned to believe all things living good any changes bad and if something around long enough then it’s natural. Just a thought towards those authorities who control such spending may have a greater weight of numbers than us boaters behind them. Just a thought
  16. How many would you need and how to transport them around the country. hell of a cost item that last one.
  17. Had same talk to a boatyard owner here in the Medway. there is just no money in it. Sailing vessels have money in fittings but the plastic hull needs to go through a shredder and, I think there is a scheme for a certain kind of plastic but I bet it’s cheaper to make new. I guess even less money for cruisers because by then every thing has gone thats worth it. At least wooden boats had a natural life span
  18. If they got the magic three. Tolls, insurance and BSS and not on a 24hour what can they do? The mess needs to be proved but the rest?
  19. Trust me I wish it was different. My other half works in this sector and I will fight as hard as I can. But it’s getting harder. As pensions dry up unless you can put 50% of your wages and final salaries schemes have gone, houses getting out of reach for the average Joe, unemployment rising fast, rent 3/4 of your monthly income eyes are going to look for shared pain. Boris has said the triple lock needs looking at its going to be a tough sell for those on universal perks like the tv and winter allowance and even tougher to ask the general public to pay even more for care homes. sad times
  20. Selective reading. I said if you can afford it, pay it. As everything in life I want to support those that can’t. And yes you are asking the generation’s below to foot the bill but that is what society is about. No but you must be expected to pay for it as well. It’s very possible you can now be retired longEr than you work. I'm not being harsh but future retirees are going to have it much harder than any recent generation and I fear the public will need to raid the nest eggs of those that have retired. After all just one visit and continued medication for a heart condition could entirely wipe any contribution made in the form of tax made. Times that many times. Social care for Dementia and other age related disease is cost that will outstrip this country ability to fund is a topic that various party’s have sidestepped only to be shown be this COVID. Trust me. Unfortunately this and many other schemes will be brought forward in the years to come and this will be the least of them. I’m fearing the days of sitting in a house worth thousands and then asking the public to pay for care while the house gets left as inheritance will slowly get gaslighted into the mainstream
  21. All the poor pensioners? very subjective that one. My neighbour sits in a house worth over 300,000 car under 2 years old, private final salary pension and enjoys sailing in the Medway. Means test the TV license because not every pensioner are poor nor every pensioner rich
  22. The stinker is the deposit for the mortgage. If you can pay rent on most of these buy to let properties then you can afford to pay the mortgage. Then how much profit does the landlord take? 10% above costs? we need rent control and fixed term rents to stop profiteering it’s a bit Wild West out there. And finally pay has failed to keep pace with rent and house prices
  23. I find leading a mooring rope from the center cleats (if you got them) as well as the stern ones, helps keep the boat even more steady if you can adjust them to work against each other. Even better if you have no one either side of you is use their dock cleats for a better angle. Had problems once when I met an owner who was doing just that and I needed his space....
  24. Don’t forget you could night fish legally. All they had to say we was night fishing

And there is the problem. Difference between guidelines and laws. Social distancing is a guide line not law
