  1. I suspect if you asked Deks Olje themselves they would say it would not, but its worth a try! Personally I would not bother about a gloss finish as whatever product you use, it will build up in time and ultimately start to crack off and peel requiring more attention. I personally don't like Danish oil but as you see others swear by it - its all a matter of opinion! The best thing about D O is that you apply it wet on wet - leaving it to dry between coats defeats the object. On a brand new mast, I managed in one day to put on around 25 coats before it started to literally run off - it still looks good today and can easily be touched up annually with a VERY light rub down and reapplying one or two coats. Adding a shiny coat IMHO adds to the complications - it may look nice in the eyes of some but getting used to a matt but highly durable finish requiring little work is far better for the amount of time spent on annual maintenance!!!! Use your boat - not work on it !!!
  2. This episode draws attention to the fact that we have totally and utterly lost the ability to assess risk - people seem to forget we do that all the time, every minute of the day, without thinking about it! Thats what life teaches you to do from a very early age!! Every time we get in a car there is risk attached to it - but do we stop and think about it? Previously when we got on a boat, there was even more risk, but did we stop and think - I suspect not! Every time we open the fridge door looking for a snack, there is a risk we will become obese, (with the exception of those who already are! ) but again who sees any risk? Every time we go on holiday abroad we have to fly, and worse still we quite happily go to areas in the world intrinsically less safe than here - does it stop us? No of course not , we subconsciously make a decision that its safe to do so. Teachers Unions want everyone deloused before going in to school, but science will show you that young children rarely catch it, train drivers are frightened of getting in their cabs but who else is in the cabs with them, and people use every excuse they can find, where they cannot understand the risk. Take away the furlough payments and that might focus a few minds! A vaccine won't help this mentality - it is unlikely to be 100% reliable and perhaps even after vaccination perhaps one in 10000 will still catch it? There is living in Norfolk nearly 1 million people so will that eradicate the risk? No 'cos people will have assessed that the risk is modest and worth taking. And as for the BA looking at the situation again, don't forget they have already told us the rivers are open, simply because they cannot shut them. Observe the 2m distancing rule and just go out - I would like to see any virus transmitting to someone else outside today in this breeze!!!!
  3. Why? In essence it carries no more risk for people living in the area, than going for a walk!!
  4. But how can I infect anyone from my boat - half the reason he has done this, I suspect, is that transmission of the virus out in the open air, is pretty unlikely at a distance of 2 metres. We cannot live in a totally risk free environment - it has never been possible and that will not change!!
  5. If you know anyone who has some D1, I would just see what would happen if you tried to put D1 over what you have - it is very very thin and I would be quite surprised if you could not get more to soak in. The real issue is that D1 is messy to apply in situe and a rubbing strake is relatively small to put it on - it has to be applied wet on wet and unless you are very careful, it will make a mess and probably more than that of your topsides. Worth a go though, its good stuff although after a period of time D2 starts to peel a bit like varnish - I would try D1 and leave it matt as next season it will just require a light rub and another coat and it will be fine! Why have a shiny surface on a rubbing strake which will require constant renewal year on year!!
  6. If I can go and sit on a park bench and have a picnic, I can sit on my boat and clean it, no sorry eat a picnic. Someone explain the difference please, now that the "essential travel" bit seems to have gone? Why does doing that carry any risk to me or others? If they now have only 20 ICU beds at the NNUH, then things have changed as they had more than that I think you will find.
  7. Oh, a bailer of course! A fit man with a bucket will always empty a boat quicker than a bilge pump - or at least thats what a salty old sea dog told me!! Thats its other use....!
  8. PW - you know that bucket you use for washing up in? Is it multi functional??
  9. Being chased by Broads Beat waving penalty notices?
  10. I think last time I looked mine had gone up to £75?
  11. Green covers on a boat Paul - someone forgot to tell you that green on a boat ( other than growth! ) is bad luck ? P.S. Thanks for that Mods earlier - this afternoon did no favours to the Forum. Politics is best left to Facebook and the Daily Mail!!!
  12. Just checked - don't look much like Amanda Holden either but to be fair, there have been so many other rather silly comments being thrown around this afternoon, I thought I would add my stupid addition!!!
  13. Ok then - lets talk about Covid 19 being spread by 5G masts! Perfectly sensible comment and very relevant to the Broads!!
  14. This is ridiculous - we now have experts pretending they know how to run a care home, run a country, comment (wrongly) on the testing, and worst of all pronouncing on the availability of PPE and death rates as well!!! Oh and the economy!! Lets leave these patently ridiculous comments and observations coming out now to the real experts and concentrate on the Broads and just bashing the BA!
  15. The issue, with testing, that everyone cannot take on board, is that it is only of value if the person actually has it at that time - if they are merely incubating the disease it won't show! If they go home and self isolate, and only get tested if they show symptoms, then the test is of value!!! Unfortunately they get advice from so many different experts with differing views, they are left with the situation that they have to make up their own minds, which is no different! Now where was I? Back to masks (another stupid topic!! ) Oh no, back to the Broads where I might just have a clue!!
  16. I am so glad that that on this specialised Broads Forum how many experts exist on the issues surrounding immunology and the spread of infectious diseases, and the such like based on what they have read from other experts! And how many want to apportion blame for something or other and want to talk about accountability - when in reality they cannot have the facts about the issues they are discussing - not even the actual death rate will not be able to be assessed over and above the normal yearly average until about 5 years time at best! Lets concentrate on the Broads and talk about something we actually know a bit about with some accuracy than engage in speculation garnered straight from the pages of Facebook and the Press - oh and Donald Trump!!!!
  17. ECIPA - now I am going to be a little contentious as I reckon you could see the Broads reopening in bits? How about local people first so we don't put a strain on the emergency services? My 5 miles is less of a strain than someone driving 50 miles, and then next stage moving it out to say, 250 miles? Reduces the risk all round and at the same time begins to get things on the move again? Now no shouting and no capital letters please but comments welcomed!!
  18. Good - nonetheless I see they only altered the options to include a cash refund when reminded by the CMA last week that they had to!!!! Alls well that ends well..!!!
  19. I think that the real issue is that companies are still trying to fob people off with credit notes as an alternative to cash refunds, saying the rules have changed. Clearly lots of people want to rebook and they will, but it won't suit everyone, so where it doesn't I cannot see why cash refunds cannot be made less any appropriate fees. As has been pointed out, some companies are doing it, so why not others? I am sure it will be sorted somewhere along the line!
  20. I don't think I would go as far as to call it a scam - they just do not have permission to operate here in the UK. They get away with it elsewhere presumably as rules and regulations vary in different counties, even throughout Europe. Our protection here in the UK is that companies offering financial services have to be authorised by the FCA - they are not. It may be individuals working for them meet the formal requirements elsewhere - but not in the UK. That is not as Andy says the same as being fraudulent or working a scam. I very much doubt that they could still be going for as long as they have, being a total scam. Prudence suggests that to get the kind of quality needed to operate in the UK is probably different and in those circumstances sensible to avoid - rather than illegal! Which is slightly different!!
  21. Apparently Zoom is quite easy to hack into - several cases have been highlighted with "porn drop ins" appearing!! Should liven up a few conversations or dire business meetings!!
  22. Yeah but look at the lot off Rotterdam and Antwerp - mostly full! Interesting to note a lot of big cruise ships laid up off the Isle of Wight and the various Cunard ships scattered around in Dover and off Weymouth - well they are not quite laid up as they do seem to like taking them out for a run up and down the Channel!!!! No little pointy hatted man running after them and going " Hoi!!!! Is that essential travel then? " Probably a bit bored - a bit like me!!!
  23. I don't think that the Which complaint will be ignored as ..an individual complaint...! Its by no means the first complaint they have lodged on other issues in the past, and as a charity have many many members - this has been brewing for some weeks and technically I guess the issue will have been raised on behalf of the members who have been complaining in droves to Which. Potters have also been pro active in returning funds I believe, so its not impossible to actually refund - unless you have spent it elsewhere!!!!!
