  1. Oh yes - had forgotten about Atco mowers too!!! I used to shove it back into the shed and say "I can't cut the grass - could not start the mower!" Strange that as when he tried it it sometimes went first kick!!! But then had I been cutting the lawn, I might have missed out on all that exploratory work which, as an early teenager, you tried out on the local girls!!
  2. Great stuff - loved the outboard diagram as it illustrates perfectly the position adopted permanently by my father in Fig 4!!! Chris i hear what you say and yes I understand - my recollection was that they loved the full throttle position when started but sadly I recall only too well the fact that after a tiring days sailing, coming back to an offshore mooring where we had left the dinghy and it not starting - necessitating a row ashore in an inflatable! What we used to put up with just to get out in the Thames Estuary!!!!
  3. Somewhere in this green and pleasant, there are people who clearly revere the old Stuart Turners - me well I just hate them!! Had a 2 cylinder one in a Macwester 27 Bit like Seagulls as far as I am concerned - always went first pull when it wasn't absolutely necessary, but when it was necessary? Those old engines always had minds of their own - in the early Fifties when my Dad had a 16' lifeboat originally from Jacksons in Peterborough ( I think) I hardly ever saw his face whilst out, as he seemed to be forever bent double over a British Anzani Pilot on the back winding a bit of string around the top! Happy Days
  4. Jay - I am sorry for the impact these recent events have had on your life and indeed very grateful that it has had little practical on my own but I will not retract my original post as i really do believe that in the midst of all this sadness, we have to careful that we do not lose sight of what may be happening under our noses. I know some will think ill of me for even posting this, but we have to be so careful of the freedoms won so hard by our forefathers are not eroded amongst this torment. In the blink of any eye, these hard won rights could so easily be taken away as a result of pettiness or misinterpretation by those in authority and I really would hate to see this happen. People like the BA, and the police too, rely on the support of the people and without this support their job becomes ever more difficult and I am not alone in being concerned. Nonetheless I am happy to leave it there out of respect to you and others but I bet we have not heard the last of this, either now, or in the future especially when the half hearted attempts to get out of this mess start to emerge!
  5. Vaughan - your post is very apposite at the moment - over vigorous enforcement of questionable guidelines could well mean the BA will begin to lose the support of some of their remaining supporters and then what will they do? And given that, and the fact I need to travel only a very short distance, perhaps when the lockdown is lifted, will there be differing rules for those that live here and those that live further away? Why not? There is much less chance, statistically, of me having an RTA on my journey to my boat than someone driving 100 miles! Thats the argument many have been using to prohibit people from going and that just does not stand the test! However what you can guarantee is it the BA will have given little thought to how they are going to get out of this conundrum! They now seem to be offering differing guidance from the police - dangerous dangerous territory! They will be banning us from tidal waters soon on the pretext that I can catch coronavirus from someone going the other way in a boat. Closing the Broads to those in the area, and indeed outside, seems to be setting an unwelcome precedent
  6. The paint thing is a load of old rowlocks especially if you have a hardware store nearby. Just go in and buy it and ignore those who are intent on trying to rewrite legislation to THEIR interpretation! Better still, ring them up and see if they deliver - most will. If your hardware shop is open, then use it - if we all carry on like this the only place to go and buy anything will be your computer!!!
  7. But they have just confirmed that I CAN get in my car and go a short distance to exercise! So thats good, I can now drive to the boat ( 5 miles) to polish it - if you don't think thats exercise you should try it!!! Its certainly harder work than actually walking!
  8. End in good time for the 16th June? I have to say I am pretty sceptical about that - especially for those "officially" old ( i.e over 70 whatever your health ) and those others deemed vulnerable. I am not particularly clever but to me the only acceptable exit strategy would be a vaccine - its not just going to fade away as far as I can see, so how are you going to able to protect those mentioned above - to me it seems the only option is to continue the lock down, at least for them, as I am not sure miracles actually happen. If you just release everyone to continue as before will that not just encourage another outbreak? I cannot see anything to say that it will not just reoccur as previously - someone cheer me up and say ,convincingly, that that will not be the case? Do we really think the holiday industry will just be allowed to continue for everyone on a given date without preconditions? My issue is that I don't really have that many years left, statistically, and its an awful waste to sit around on your bum waiting for a whole year to just pass by, just in case!!!!!
  9. Thank goodness for normality!! Titty's back!!!! It will be "The Dambusters" next!!!
  10. Cuckoos PW? The first ones are just crossing the Sahara as of yesterday - they usually cross Europe pretty quickly on the way up so with a bit of luck....! (Although they do seem to be even thinner on the ground this year - sadly) https://www.bto.org/our-science/projects/cuckoo-tracking-project
  11. Its OK Vaughan, people only read what they want to see not wot you wrote!!!
  12. For what its worth ECIPA, thats pretty fanciful As has already been said, I care not a lot about the money but far far more for my Broads which I have loved, and still do, for so long. If paying a toll keeps it broadly as it is, then so be it. Indeed after its all over, I shall be pleased to stand up and say that I contributed - what you do I really don't care but to be quite frank I just wish you and your like, would just shut up and go out gardening!!! If that gets me a warning do I care? No not a jot!!!!
  13. I think a new one would cost less than that, leaving out labour, but can you leave out labour? After all if they were not building a boat, they would be doing something else! I think this post has gone a little awry - as I pointed out, clearly its not that easy to make money or the Broads would be awash with new start ups, not vice versa.
  14. I think some think that rather than God, its regarded as the other end of the spectrum!!!!!!!
  15. If you could really make that kind of profit from boatyards that easily, I cannot see why any yards should close down at all, and indeed I would expect to see a queue of people taking over those yards so they could live in luxury!! My guess, for what its worth, is that figure is far from the truth - but I could be wrong!
  16. Not convinced about the animals one - if you check I believe the Hong Kong dog story did not prove to be correct in the end. We shall see about the tigers in due course I guess - although don't ask me to insert the thermometer please!
  17. James Knight posting in a personal capacity and not without a prior agenda? Yeah right!!!!!!
  18. I have just had a horrid thought!! Perhaps if we don't like paying the toll money to the BA, we should consider transferring everything to the control of the EA, like the Thames and the Fens do? Would that make people happier??
  19. I don't want to destroy the Broads or the BA by reducing their income - do that at your peril. Vaughans words should be heeded - in other posts I think he has pointed out how precarious the overall situation is and I would not wish to exacerbate that, as I want the general status quo to continue - I want my rivers and my Broads I love so much to remain unchanged, and in overall terms the cost of the toll is acceptable to me given the total investment I have made.
  20. You boys are stars!!!! See - I told you it was a bit harder!!! Thank you all so very much for your collective effort and I know someone who will be delighted! Seriously though it is the collective knowledge of all of you who nailed this so thank you once again - it has enabled another missing part of the Archive to be properly identified. P.S. Pete - my Black Sailed Trader should be on the boat by now - all the boat stuff is stored in the attic overwinter to protect it. It should be on the boat and it might just get there now as I do have to drive a bit to my walk tomorrow and I might just pass my boat on the way!!!!!
  21. Thanks for everyone's comments - what a real help you all are!!!! Not sure I am much closer to a definitive answer ( I know I will not get one of those! ) but there are a few clues from some which, either get me closer, or perhaps further away!!! My own Black Sailed Trader is in my attic with the boat books - need to pop up and check something and then I will be back!!
  22. That wouldn't surprise me particularly as she was known to work the Norwich River.
  23. Vaughan - just something to mull over!! Some 5 years ago my brother in law died and he had a huge collection of railway and transport photos ( including many transparencies) of lines and especially branch lines pre Dr Beeching. He knew many of the specialist train book writers and he was always sending stuff off to them for publication in many of their books. How many he had I never knew but he had boxes and boxes of them - but access to the right box was only in his head! When he died, even though it was not long ago, there was only one place who offered to take them and they promised to sort them out and digitalized what was a truly historic record - as far as I am aware it was never done and I bet they now do not even know what they have got! You must do yours - its part of the Broads and cannot be lost! I keep telling Mr Waller to do the same especially as I know he has some precious glass slides including many of wherries which like my brother in laws will eventually be lost unless they are preserved. Its always one of those jobs you are always going to get round to - but never do!! The Norfolk Wherry Trust has a huge digitalized Archive available for use - why not have a look at what can be achieved
