Its a small world John. I live on the edge of Grimsby where you originate from before moving to Norfolk, and I left Norfolk a long time ago to return to Lincolnshire! I once lived almost opposite the Crown at Smallburgh. So it was not far to come to the Broads then. That was a long time ago though. Maurice -

Hi Gramps. I actually live in Great Coates. Afraid you can no longer get near the North Wall. ABP are very security conscious. Occasionally they do have an open day at the Dock Tower. Its all changed a great deal now with all the offshore wind energy companies, and the car import docks. Its not like it once was. The Humber itself is still very busy, with plenty of shipping movements. You mention Killingholme. That huge now, and very busy. I still find the bank interesting. Talking of fishing they are now enforcing some archaic old law to stop people setting drift nets at low water off Cleethorpes. Its a shame there was only to of the old fishermen still doing it. Still I guess nothing stays the same! Maurice -
Lovely photograph. Very atmospheric. Really captures the Broads in a special way. Maurice

Welcome. Have a good holiday. Looks like the weather is set well for another week at least. Maurice

Welcome Pia. Good luck with the restoration. I am sure many people will be able to offer advice. There's a few of these boats about. I am not sure I agree that she is an "Ugly Duckling" I hope you have many happy days on the water with her. Maurice

Hi Gramps. I am not new to this site. Just not an avid poster. I have to say I do like this site, and the friendly way its run. I also come from Lincolnshire so welcome from me too. Maurice -
Hi watershed, and welcome from me. Nice photo of your boat. I feel I might have seen her before somewhere. Was the picture taken in Heybridge? I digress a little now, but in another life many years ago I used to call on the County Arms at Terrington St Clements. Not long ago on my way back from Norfolk I decided to detour, and call in for a drink. Surprise surprise! the pub was a house, and the car park a housing development! Nothing stands still does it. Its an age thing!! Anyway do enjoy the project, and perhaps we will see you on the water someday. I hope you let us know how you are getting on with the restoration of the yacht. Maurice

Perhaps they did a search on Ebay, and were unable to find one. Bit scarce on the ground they tell me! Maurice

A few copper nails/roves for authenticity perhaps. Now that would be progress. Maurice

Polly I watched it, and reacted as you did when they put it in the water. I felt they should have let it sink for a week! They made a lot of work for themselves! Maurice

She is one very special Wherry. The inside is spectacular. Long may she sail The Broads! Maurice

Mystery donor secures WW2 Bomber Command memorial spire

Sue. I know Canwick Hill well, where the monument will be erected. Its a nice area, and I don't think vandals will be attracted to it. I know that many monuments/plaques have been stolen for scrap. Its become harder now to sell metals. The scrap yards are far better regulated than they were. I am amazed that there are low life out they who do vandalise such things as war memorials, and cemeteries. Times we live in!! Maurice -

Alan. Thanks for posting the link. Its good news. Someone has been extremely generous. I have been wondering how the project was progressing. Maurice -
I imagine that Richard is waiting to see how it goes over time. It perhaps is teething problems. Lets hope it is. I wish him well, and hope it sorts itself out for both him, and the members. It can't be easy running these forums. Maurice

I seem to be favoured by Nigerians. I get these emails with tales of woe. i.e. My father is a political prisoner he has 20 million US Dollars in a bank in London ...................................What a wonderful opportunity lol It amazes me that there are people who fall for this. Greed of course. Maurice

Amazing how a thread can develop! Lori asked about gas lamps! and its turned into an hilarious thread, with some fantastic, and extremely funny contributions. English humour at its best. Loved them all especially the four Yorkshiremen, living just across the water from there, I can relate to such folk. I have enjoyed reading this thread immensely! Maurice

I remember them on boats in the 60s they were fairly common then. They were noisy, and burned with an odd smell. As Alan said you could very easily break the mantle with a match they were very fragile. I think we did trust it, after all it was in everyday use then. In the 50s I had an Aunt who lived in a house which only had gas lighting. In that case people did worry about leaking gas. It was coal gas, and very toxic!! and was the cause of many deaths before North Sea gas came along. Had health and safety been about then, they would have had a field day over so many things. Maurice

Not been around for a month due to moving house! and not having the internet. I wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year. Maurice

Andy Banner Mentioned Teamac. I have also used this product, in a salt water environment. I found it excellent, and stood the test of time. Maurice

A really interesting film very nostalgic. I had to call my wife in to see it, When it was showing London St in Norwich, she was employed at Bullens the Jewellers shortly after the film was made, there was a lovely shot of the shop. Things have changed somewhat but many identifiable places on the Broads, and around it. Almost made me feel young again..............Almost !!! Thanks Jill for posting it. Maurice

Oh dear! Has the NBF gone belly up again or is it just me?!

I like to view whatever sites that cater for my interests, some of course more than others. Its a choice thing, and up to the individual. If I feel any one, on whatever site is too opinionated then I just ignore that persons post. If you were in any group of people its unlikely you would get on with everyone, but I am sure you would still go there to chat with those you do! Maurice -
Always a pleasure reading your posts Jon, Especially on these dark afternoons. Oh well spring will soon be here again. Have to be positive! Maurice
