  1. Hi John, i`ve promised myself to take Karen in there one day, but have`nt yet got round to it. The last time i went in there was with my brother and his rwo daughters when they were toddlers. Ne`s now a grandfather of three, and we went there 20 years ago. It`s shocking how fast the time has flown by.
  2. Hi marshman, That`s the one i was trying to think of, but could`nt remember the name of.
  3. Another one in Wroxham , imediately behind the day boat and bridge pilot office (i think?) anyway, up river side of the bridge in the Hoveton side, and just down an alley. can`t remember the name, but we often go in there for breakfast if moored in Wroxham. Also one in Coltishall, there`s a hotel with a riverside garden. It`s down a track past the common and pubs there.
  4. Seriously though, If an insurance claim is made, and subsequently payed out, does the recovered property automatically become the property of the insurance company who then have the rite to dispose of it as they see fit and try to recover at least some of their losses?. The reason i ask, is if someone DOES get payed out for claim, and the property is recovered, if it is returned to who it was stolen from, and they sell it on, are they then guilty of defrauding the insurance company?.
  5. I think there`s only one person to blame for that Trev? :
  6. I`ve just thought of another couple of places. Cupcakes, beside the river at Reedham, though i`m not sure whether it`s still there, anyone know?. Also the Ship Inn by the railway bridge might do afternoon or cream teas, again, does anybody else know?. Also WRC "Waveney River Centre" have a cafe up on the hillside overlooking the marina and river. It`s in, or adjacent to the pool complex.
  7. There`s also the teashop in Ludham village opposit the church. Take them by boat to Womack staithe, then a 5 minute waklk to the village. It`s just around the bend from the pub. There`s also the little shop on the riverside at Acle bridge, who have a few tables outside, and possibly the Bridge inn might do cream teas. Also, don`t forget, Caroline at Rosie Leas in Loddon has here tea garden next to the car park which is very nice, and they bring everything out to you.
  8. What i find amusing is the road tax analagy. A lot of people, some on here have in the past complained about the way road tax is collected, saying "put it on petrol and deisel, then those who use the roads most will pay the most". Is`nt it amazing to find out that SOME of those very same people DON`T want the same principle used for tolls?. Having cake and eating it come to mind, as well as double standards. I think the fairest way is for everybodies toll to be counted monthly, with the ability to pay on line. That way, there`s no need for BA bearocrats to get involved, and you will only pay for the amount of time your boat is in the main river. With modern day electronics, ANY boat can be loged wherever it goes via GPS, so it will be very difficult to mess with it. As JM said, this is 2015, not 1985, and the technology is already available. My last point is that several people have been saying "open to abuse". By those words, you are implying that toll payers are possible fraudsters out to fleece others. You must have a pretty low opinion of your fellow toll payers.
  9. Hi Ian, The Syndicate boating idea has worked for Karen and me, even though we don`t, and probably never will use all 4 weeks of our allocation (unless we still have it in 8 years time when i retire, then Karen goes on short time?), when we`ll use all 4 weeks and possibly more if other owners don`t use all their allocation. What have you bought to replace "Clandestine", and will you be around in early November when we`re back on Lightning (not Thunder)?. I forgot to ask, how`s Heather, all fine and well we hope?.
  10. Hi Ian, good to hear from you again. I think the whole toll system is in need of a massive upgrade. I pay many things by monthly direct debit, or standing order. I can also pay for many things by bank transfer by a machine in the bank without seeing a cashier, and it costs absolutely NOTHING. Why oh why do the BA still persist in what really amounts to legalised fraud?. There is absolutely no justification whatsoever for any system which makes you pay twice for one service, except for pure greed that is. As for refunds, YES they should be legally obliged to refund any toll on a boat that is taken off the system. The IS`NT any need for any massive admin charges, as everything can be done on-line, and without the need for any BA fogies sitting behind a desk. The only real reason for the system as is, is to give the corrupt BA an excess of funds to ditribute between the old boy network in jollies.
  11. What was "Live Aid"?. I`ve heard of "Lucozade", :hardhat:
  12. Well, your good lady is in luck then How about some of these?, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Volt-Hair-Straighteners-ceramic-plates/dp/B0042NYF3O or these http://www.towsure.com/12-volt-travel-hair-straighteners We got the towsure ones for karen, and they DO work very well..
  13. Seen them. Still fabulous to watch though. The way these films are put together and edited etc is very professional, and in my mind, the sort of standard you`ll see on tv. Why oh why do we NOT see programmes with films like these rather than mind numbing soaps, big brother, and i`m a celebrity?. I do wonder at the mindset of some people?.
  14. Hi Alan sorry, i forgot to say, in terms of time i would imagine against the tide you`re talking around 4 1/2 - 5.00 hours minimum depending on engine revs. If you want to keep the revs down, then i`d leave around 08.00 at the latest.
  15. Hi Charles, Where in Hampshire are you?. We`re in East Dorset about 4 miles from Ringwood, so this journey is a regular for us. We always leave nice and early, usually around 06.00, which sees us on the M25 before 07.30. Then we go clockwise round to the M11 and up the A11. Leaving early means we always seem to miss the traffic, and allows us plenty of time for a couple of comfort stops. W usually arrive in Norwich around 11.00, so divert down to Loddon for lunch at Rosie Leas. Unless we stop off for lunch at the Hockham Eagle with a certain young man and his good lady that is?. I did consider diverting off and trying another route, but we`ve only encountered a problem once, and that was last year when the A11 was blocked between the M11 and A14 at Newmarket, so we went further up the M11 to the end of the motorway and then along the A14. Apart from that, we`ve never had any problems. I hope you have a good and safe journey.
  16. If you HAVE to push the tide, then i`d definitely leave as early as possible. If HW is at 2.30ish, try to get away before 09.00. That will allow you around 5 1/2 hours which see you reach GY before HW, so you can at least take the last of the flood up to Stokesby. From experience, Stokesby can be full quite early, so if you go through GY at around 1.30ish, you`ll have plenty of time to go further up river if you have to. I do see peoples point re running with the ebb, but sometimes that just is`nt an option, and you just have to get on with things. We`ve often pushed the tide on the Yare and Waveney having come down the Bure on the ebb, which though laborious, is`nt as bad as is often portrayed. Just don`t plan to get anyway way upstream.
  17. It does`nt matter one bit how long they`ve been back in power, they all lie through their back teeth even if they were now in opposition. It`s what ALL politicians do best at all times. Remember the film "The Hunt For Red October"?, the guy said "i`m a politician, and if i`m NOT kissing babies, i`m stealing their lollipops" Synical or what?.
  18. Hi Jim, some years back, i was looking to make the same as this, but was told of the sort of device below. It`s the typ of thing i mentioned earlier, but this one has a circuit breaker built in, AND it has 2 usb ports for charging gizmos etc. http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/outwell-power-plus-mobile-mains-kit-p333289 There is also this one, but it does`nt have the usb ports. http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/maypole-mobile-mains-power-unit-230v-10a-p311812 I noticed the one in your piccy does`nt seem to have a circuit breaker, so this sort of device is complete and CE approved.
  19. If you buy a £1.00 card, you get £1.00 of leccy, so if you buy a 25p card, you will get 25p of leccy. Or are you saying when you buy a £1.00 card, they are giving you 25p of leccy free?. I don`t think so. The cost of infrastructure to install these posts will all have been calculated into the overall charge for every unit supplied. So however much you spend on a card, the overall costs are factored in to every penny. So now matter how little you make the smallest amount, it`s already payed for itself.
  20. Knowing how the Conservatives want to sell off everything, it would`nt surprise me to find out the want to privatise the BA?. Then everything they do would be based on purely commercial interrests rather than what is right for the Broads, and those that live, work, and look after them.
  21. Looks like it`ll be worth a visit, however we won`t be able to make it. I think if there are special beers and planes in the vicinity, a certain young Admiral from Gt Hockham might be keen to go :naughty: ?. Something else worth a look is the Flixton Air Museum (Just ouside Bungay), which by the way is ABSOLUTELY FREE to enter. You are invited to make a donation, but it IS voluntary.
  22. I forgot to add, why does it have to be a minimum charge of £1.00?. It would`nt cost any more to issue cards from 25p, to however much you would need for an overnight. When we were there in June, we managed to moor at many locations with postsand all but one, the one at Loddon, had credit left on it. We never used more than 20p per night, so as i said, why not make them start at 25p?. I also like Robins idea of a pay as used idea, where you can`t plug in til you`ve put your card in, then have it automatically turn off and return the card when you unplug. Unfortunately, the current system is`nt perfect, but it is pretty damned good, but whatever system you bring in to replace it, no matter how it works, it will always have some sort of drawback.
  23. I always used to be very critical of 240v on a boat, but since we borrowed a 240v hookup with 3 pin sockets and its own circuit breaker from former forumite w44nty a few years back, i`m now a staunch supporter. If you`re on a hire boat, you can use one to charge phones etc,. even run the boats own tv etc if they`re 240v. The only thing you can`t do on a hireboat with one is heat the water in the calorifier / hot water tank. So if you have one of these hook-ups you can at least keep most of the charge in the batteries. Lightning has a 240v system wwith shore power hook-up, but we`ll still be taking our 3 socket one along, as i think having a couple of extra heaters on the go might overload the system. Roll on November, we`ll see how well it works.
  24. I think Broadlander had a longer aft cabin Alan?.
