  1. I seem to remember somebody on the forum had a "strapline" saying "Give a man a fish and he`ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he`ll sit all day in a boat drinking beer". I can`t remember who it was, but i thought it was a great saying, and i would imagine quite true for some?.
  2. I forgot to say above, when we arrived home from our week on Kestrel in June, just as we turned onto our drive, the Red Arrows flew past and greated us. What a great bunch of chaps..
  3. While all you lot were afloat today, Karen and i spent the day staining the fence by the drive, and digging out the top soil so we can gavel it. We WERE however treated to the sound of 10 Rolls Royce Merlin engines, one apeice in the Spitfire and Hurrican of the BBMF, the other other 8 on the two Lancasters. They were about a mile or two distant, and were flying over Verwood way. I could hear the Merlins long befor i saw the planes. Absolutely fantastic sight to see, and now can`t wait till next weekend when we`ll see them at the Bournemouth Airshow.
  4. If you`re still at Loddon, and he still needs attention, I know John Cressy at Maffett cruisers used to be a retained fireman based in Loddon, so they may still have some emergency first aide kit. I know it`s a long shot, but if his foot is as bad as you say, it`s worth the asking. Also, if he`s lost a lot of blood, ON NO ACCOUNT LET HIM WALK ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOAT, irresopective of whether he`s wearing a lifejacket. Injuries like that can sometimes bring on delayed shock, and make people pass out. If you`re still concerned after that?, call out the paramedic, it`s what they`re there for. One last thing, do not wash down the decks with river water, as if he`s on deck, and gets wet feet, there`s also the possibility of WEILS disease.
  5. Hi Strow, yes, i`ve already got Malwarebytes, which auto updates each time. I must say, it`s pretty good too. It picked up on 2 trojans when i was searching various Crossbow sites in the US. And before anybody gets the wrong idea, i do archery, and have often considered taking up crossbow shooting as a sideline. The Bournemouth Archery clubs "Blue lion shoot" has a crossbow section. Anyway, back on subject, when it picked up the 2 trojans, it was just a quick couple of clicks on the Malwarebytes thingy, and they were gone.
  6. Yes, i`ve had weird things happen on this one. Sometimes, on certain websites, my system displays things completely different from Karen tablet etc.And that`s googling the same thing, or even typing in a web adress. Do different systems, or broadband providers display things differently?, i know it may be a stupid question to some on here, but i`m a ludite, and hate modern technology, and don`t want to become a slave to it. Having said that, i do use the internet for a lot of things, but mostly information etc.
  7. Hi Iain, You should have a word with Paul (aka forumite "Paul & Lorna) as their boat "Peta`s Joy" is an ex Aston Seamaster 30. You may have hired it in it former glory?.
  8. Seeing as you`re on Kingfisher Ian, why not go under Beccles bridge and moor at Geldeston. Not many boats venture up there, so you might find plenty of room. You can moor at the bridge just below Rown boatyard, or at the pub.
  9. Many thanks for posting that John, it`s a great article with some really stunning photo`s. :clap .
  10. Ian (Maxwellian), do you recognise this?, it wa last year.
  11. Ah, Langley dyke, now you`re talking. The place does`nt get many visitors, as every time we`ve been there, it`s uaually empty, or with one boat, so it`s a regular stop off point whenever Karen and i travel the Yare. I think since the pub went about 10 years (maybe even more than that, Howard should know :naughty: ) ago, it does`nt get so much traffic. A perfect stopover for those that enjoy a bit of peace and quiet, specially if you want to do some fishing.
  12. Hi Highlander, You`ll probably find the rangers being rushed off their feet sitting in their expensive toll payed for launch using a toll payed for speed gun to catch those violent offenders doing 4 1/2 mph in a 4mph limit :River Police two guns . A bit synical i know, but if the cap fits etc etc.
  13. I think the reason why the Stracey arms has had a chequered recent history is a bit strange. It`s 5 miles out from Gt Yarmouth, with only river and road traffic for its customers. Now think about the Berney arms, it`s roughly the same distance from Yarmouth, but only has the river and very occaisional train for its customers, yet it seems to do reasonably well?. I think the comment somewhere above about making it a "decent venue". We all know on this forum which pubs etc get good or better forumites reviews, so we all use them. That`s because they offer what the public want. So why can`t that be the case for the Stracey arms?. As for the Tapas bar, i did say if we were looking for an overnight mooring, we`d go in, as i`ve only ever had tapas once (in Norwich 13 years ago) and rather liked it, so if it`s still there and open in late October, i`l try it again.
  14. Absolute rubbish. There`s no reason why you should`nt be the lone voice John, it`s what makes for interresting discussion. We all have our gripes and opinions on may subjects, some of us from experience, and some from other sorces, be it media intervention or just word of mouth, though that is only hearsay. The difference is we all see things from our own perspectives, and form opinions based on them. The important thing is that no matter how different your, or my, or anybody elses views are, we have the rite to air them, and we should all at least respect those views, even if you don`t aggree with them. Besides, it might just make someone with no experience on a subject see things in a slightly differnt light. Keep on being the lone voice John, i for will always respect your views, and more importantly, i will not judge you or think differntly of you for being so. Regards to all ....................... Neil.
  15. Yeah, strange that. I`ve hired several Alphas, and all the beds that run athwarthsip are, or feel like they`re 6` or shorter. We had Kestrel this year, and slept in the centre cab8in with the engine beneath, The bed was quite high, so my size 9s were a little cramped under a low side deck, even worse was how short the bed was, so i could`nt stretch out either. I think Ian (Maxwellian) might know what i mean as Kingfisher is the same.
  16. But it IS their responsibility to make sure allpremiums are honest and above board, and that means if you have a car with a forecourt value of £5,000, but a trade value of £3,000, the insurance company should be honest enought offer a lower premium in relation to the trade value of the car. That said, i`ve always insured my cars to the value of the cost and gradually decrease that every year. Shame they don`t decrease the premiums pro rata. As for US HONEST CUSTOMERS paying for insurance fraud, personally, i think all insurance companies should be liable for the fraud, by investigating it thoroughly. and take the nessecary funding from the directors dividends and expence accounts, then we`ll see just exactly how commited they are to HONEST CUSTOMERS satisfaction. None of the insurance companies give a damn about insurance fraud, they just brush it aside as an occupational hazard, payable by hiking up customers premiums. If THEY were legally bound to sort the problem, they would soon do what it takes, no matter what. Theives and robbers the lot of them. It`s no wonder the public no longer have any loyalty to them and keep shopping around on "Compare the meerkat" every year, i do, and every year my insurance goes down.
  17. I`l be going to work tomorrow, but Saturday, i`m going back to work :cry :cry . I`l be thinking of all you lot afloat and enjoying yourselves, but i bet you won`t be thinking of me slaving away in a dusty old hanger?. Well, alright, not slaving away, but busy nonetheless.
  18. We`ve moored at Thorpe river green, and it`s a really stunning place when the sun is shining. As for the bridges?, well, we`ve been under them when they`ve had 8ft clearance, and we`ve passed by them when they`ve had only 6ft, so it really does depend on tides. We`ve not been in any of the pubs, but i did read some years back that the one on the opposite side of the road was very good. If we stay south on Lightning this October, we might just moor overnight if we can get through the bridges, then try the pub. If we do, we`ll let you know what it`s like.
  19. Yes, i was talking to a friend (in Norfolk) on faceache the other day, and he said the one in East Kirkby HAS 4 new engines now, but whether or not they`re yet installed and tested and certified is another matter. Would`nt it be a sight to see, 3 Lancasters flying in formation. On a recent TV programme titled "What the Dambusters did nex", they had the wreckage of a downed Lancaster somewhere in Norway. which is still lying where it crash landed, though the ravages of time have started to take their toll. This particular Lanc is the sole survivng example from the original Dam raid.
  20. Or do you mean "come for the car sir" while "Dualling banjos" is playing?.
  21. Yes, i`ve put my brother down as co-owner, the reasoning being that Karen and i only really want 2 weeks, then if Trev wants a week with his family, we can agree which weeks we`ll have. and he can have the others. We`ll both be on her some times, but working for a bank, he gets more holiday than Karen and i, so if he wants to use Lightning when we go elsewhere, he`s more than welcome. Geoffers, you can buy the 2 week share in Evening Shadow, we did consider it, but went for Lightning because the 3 cabins are considerably more spacious. Also, if the 4 weeks does`nt work out, and my brother does`nt use the 2 weeks we don`t, i`l try and split mty share in two, and sell the other 2 weeks.
  22. oooooh, This is getting better by the day. Thanks for that GC
  23. Hi Sue, If you are definitely coming to the Bournemouth airshow, let ma know what day or days you`re coming, we are intending to go, so it would be nice to say hello.
  24. Hi all, The 2014 Southamton Boatshow is only abot 4 weeks away, is anybody venturing to the South coast for a visit?. Karen and i will be going on the Wednesday, as we were given tickets last week, so going on the Wednesday will break the week up.
  25. These two will be at the Bournemouth airshow at the end of this month, and i work at Bournemouth Airport where they`ll be landing. I`m going to make sure my camera is charged up, and get some photo`s, as it`ll probably be the last time i`l see 2 flying together. Having said that, the other one that`s based in Lincolnshire somewhere (i think?) will not be given a license to fly, as it needs 4 new engines. But after a conversation with a good friend of mine, he told me they have them, so it will hopefully be flying soon. I did read somewhere that you can actually pay for a taxi run up and down the runway in it, though i don`t know if that`s correct. Anybody else know any more on the subject?. Regards to all ......................... Neil.
