A friend was getting a boat sorted out that had failed its test on a pipe being incorrect simply because it lacked the kite mark. He went to a company in Soham that specialises in pipes of all types He took the offending pipe with him so that he could make it clear as to what he required. The chap he saw was incredulous, and wanted know why he was replacing it because apparently the existing pipe was what was routinely used in military aircraft and was immensely superior to it's proposed replacement. This was duly to!d to the Inspector who promptly agreed to leave it as was and issued a pass certificate!

When  my boat had its first BSS inspection it was failed on the fuel hoses (Original Volvo Penta parts) because they lacked the appropriate BS number. I took them off and went to a well known local stockist for replacements.

" Are these for the BSS?" I was asked. " Yes, i'v just had a 'fail'.".

" Well", I was told, "best not take VP originals then, they haven't got numbers on them even now.".  They made up pattern parts using the original banjo couplings.....

Just one piece of BSS stupidity.  Another is the requirement to replace perfectly serviceable 'Pyrex' glass fuel bowls with alumunium parts, which will melt if exposed to fire far sooner than borosilicate (pyrex) glass will.

Orca failed her first BSC.. due to braided fuel lines on our new Vetus engine.. because they was braided he couldn't see if they was BSS standard?! I'm sorry but I trust vetus over some canal folk... Our own marine surveyor disaggreed but these BSC chaps won't listen to anyone... we had to modify the pipes... needless to say our broom will not pass bsc now but she's a hell of lot safer to use at sea what with glass fuel filter caps.. there's safe and there safe.. bsc needs improvements in places to cover the right safe!

In terms of pesky poxy dirty liveaboards.. you know where my view lies.. there is a serious issue of housing, I think it's easier for the older generations to be ignorant considering housing in the past was a lot easier to come by, now it is well known it's near impossible to get on the housing market. People have to live somewhere and the government, local authorities etc are still ignorant to permitting residential moorings.. one day.. In regards to keeping boats clean it's really not as easy as it sounds, boat attract crude in seconds and really need weekly cleaning as much as I love my boats I have other things to do at presents.. The joys of shared ownership though you don't get to experience the best of boat ownership...

As part of the older generation I don't have a problem with the principal of  livaboards or any other life style as long as they abide by the same rules as the rest of society, I am all for freedom of choice but along with that freedom comes a responsibility to respect the society that grants it.

Fred society plows hundred of thousands of pounds into land based housing some of which is seriously abused , there are many estate's that are run down etc have gardens full of rubbish partly stripped cars etc n society just plows more money into it , this isn't just a boat orientated problem .

Yes marinas would have to be properly regulated but that said no more so than a private marina is ,I do think in some respect s society is turning a blind eye to the problem hoping it will go away , it simply can't cope with all the people that need housing , image if all the live a boards gave up and wanted a house ? There isn't housing now for those that want one never mind another big in flux of people , cash strapped councils would have real problems housing all those eligible for benefits that currently live on boats which would inevitability be felt cost wise by council tax payer's , the councils currently just move people along that are moored on their land that doesn't solve the problem it just moves it , BA's stance is exactly the same , what needs to be done is tackle the problem head on , be more relaxed about planning applications for residential marinas , they need to engage the problem and by they I mean councils , planning authorities , and those responsible for navigation all of which currently have got the heads firmly in the sand only coming out to say no to others that want to try and tackle the problem by applying for planning etc .

This problem is nation wide not just on the broads but just the sane as here those that can help aren't doing , and so it goes on yr in yr out with no progress at all .
