Boats For Sale,brokers Etc

Recommended Posts

In my search for a boat,

live already noticed that there is not much for sale( in my price range).

what appear to be nice boats are under offer pretty sharpish.

is it too early in the year?
ive been to look at two boats,

1st was a Broom 30 up at Thorne nr Doncaster,

up at just under £30 k.

on stepping aboard I could smell the damp and rot,

the windows were leaking, all of the lining woodwork was rotten under the decks,

the timber work above the windscreens was delaminating and rotten,

I managed to lift the floor above the port side shaft and the bilges were full of water.

To cut a long story short,

on commenting to the broker about it,and suggesting it was well overpriced,

HE AGREED WITH ME!!

so 5 hr round trip,£40 of fuel wasted.

The  good thing to come out of it was,I liked the layout and style of the broom

2nd boat was a steel Dutch cruiser ,

same price,nice condition,BUT,

the interior had been ripped out and “ remodelled “,

so not for me.

im interested to hear people’s views on the boat market this year,

I have read and have observed the hike in prices throughout the COVID/lockdown period with all things leisure related ,I wonder what this year will bring,

I’ll hope for a bit of a reset with prices, but won’t hold my breath.

In the meantime,I’ll keep searching

The market has been hot since Covid kicked off two years ago.  When we found our boat in 2019, the NYA website used to have about 6 or 7 pages, each with 20 craft advertised.  Now, it’s usually 3 pages, including trailers and craft that are either sale agreed or sold.  Look on  Apolloduck, too - https://www.apolloduck.co.uk/

Have you registered an interest with some brokers, so you’re notified when something suitable comes in?  Also, look on other waterways.  The Broads carries a price premium.  You can buy something elsewhere and get it transported and registered with the BA and still save money.  Be patient - something will turn up.

I suspect the market may improve as the year goes on, likely starting from April onwards as decisions to sell up are made before mooring/tolls are paid but currently it's very limited and anything decent gets snapped up quickly.

My advice is be patient, don't just buy for the sake of buying and really know what you want so when it does pop up you can move swiftly to secure the purchase.

I’m in no rush,

I’ve contacted boatshed, they’ve put my details on the system and I’m searching tinterweb most nights inc Apollo duck etc.

I guess my problem at the moment is there is only two broom 30’s for sale in the U.K..

one is a single engined SKIPPER,

I have  viewed the other one and it’s a project.(been there,done that.)

I want original,unmessed with and loved.:default_biggrin:

im sure my boat and I will find one another!

So if an owner puts a boat into brokerage, who’s paying mooring etc,etc

if ,for instance it’s with boatshed where the boat remains in its current berth.

If it's with BoatShed then the owner is still paying for the mooring and toll but if it's at an actual brokerage with premises such as NYA then the boat doesn't need to be tolled and the mooring/storage is covered as part of the brokerage fees(usually free mooring for a set period and then maybe a charge after that). Boatsheds fees are lower than the 'full' brokerages.

Ok got that,

so with a broker such as NYA market forces come into play as they won’t want overpriced boats hanging around,?

The “broker” where I viewed the broom was a marina so they don’t care if it sits another year if the rents being paid I guess?

The odd boat does pop up on fleabay and gumtree (norfolk) now and then by owners selling privately not want to paying brokers fees.

Keeping a look out,

personally,

I think an active forum like this is my place to buy.

you guys will know,the owner,the boat,and it’s history,

word of mouth and social contacts.

It’s the way I’ve carried my work forward for the most of my working life.

Can’t seem to edit,

so let’s say boatshed have a vessel on their books which is overpriced ,

at some point after feedback from viewings they will more than likely advise the seller of a realistic price to sell?

Yes the full brokers will definitly want to keep prices realistic and probably insist on reductions etc if a boat doesn't sell(that or ask you to take it away) and I'm sure Boatshed will advise sellers too but they would have less incentive to do so I would imagine - there are one or two boats currently listed with them that have been at their original asking prices for months.

Don't be afraid to make a 'cheeky' offer on something that seems over priced, you might be the third one that week to do so which might make the seller realise they are asking too much....

I’m searching everyday,not because I’m desperate,

purely because I need to see the boats.

unless you’ve studied your target boat, you won’t know whether there “all like that sir”

I’ve only been looking for a few months,

in that short time ,we’ve gone from

a Shetland 4+2 at  mebbs £10 k(don’t like that how much is a newer one)

back to my starting point in boating ,a 30 ft twin motor cruiser,

however , the numbers seem to have got a bit bigger,:default_blink:

Have a look at some of the Irish brokers as there may be some Broom 30's over there.

Be careful with that, now.  Since Brexit, there may be issues and charges importing from Ireland, including the addition of VAT.

I’ve had a reasonable look around,

shannon boats tick the boxes,

but haulage costs,( on a ferry) kerrrrrrrkhing.

added to that vat on Southern Ireland boats.

I’ve looked at Dutch steel cruisers in France as well, but the vat and haulage,,

hmmm ,not convinced that there’s any gains vrs hassle
