BroadAmbition
On our way home for our after shoot dinner at Blyth. Griffs Growlers were victorious over Bobs Boyz with a score of 548 Thats 1-0, five more to go for the season Griff
BroadAmbition
Update - Lambton last Friday - Bobs Boyz won that one so levelled the score to 1-1, they came 10th overall with Griffs Growlers back in 14th. That out of 53 x teams. Both teams improved on last years scores, thing was they improved more than we did! On Clay (Goal) difference we are just two ahead Tomorrow sees us at Widmerpool on our third competition team shoot of the season. They beat us last year - Just - Time for revenge - He says optimistically Griff

floydraser
Blatant thread hijack to say a big congratulations to Nathan Hales for the Olympic gold. Just watched it live. What composure! And although it hurts to say it: well done to the BBC for being grown up enough this time to show it live so the competitors get just recognition.
BroadAmbition
I'm going on a game shoot soon - Pheasant and partridge, taking Purdey dog too of course. First time in about three years as the prices have got a bit silly. (This one was won at an auction - we stole it) The thing is it will be a non-lead shot day. Bismuth and tungsten are out of the question so It'll be steel then. But what size? I normally shoot 30/32g No6's lead. I've been advised to go up to No4's in steel Griff
ChrisB
Difficult! I hate steel, for so many reasons. Yes, up two sizes is what they say, but No4 is going to make a big hole in a Partridge so I would compromise with 5s. Personally I shoot Bismuth through my 20gauge game gun but at £40 per 25 about 5x the price of lead it hurts, but I do not go on big days anymore because of cost as you say got silly these days. My last syndicate shot over a SSSI near Stalham, only Steel allowed, so we complied and littered grazing marsh with plastic wad, crazy! The Scandinavians are more enlighted, they are much the same but if shooting water greater than 2m you can use lead even on Wildfowl.
ChrisB
MOST IMPORTANT. Check your chokes nothing tighter than 1/2 using Steel.
ChrisB
Seems I am out of date as I bought a "Slab" for £400. This seems the going rate gor a box. 12 gauge should be a bit cheaper as demand is greater.

Wussername
I used to enjoy my day with my dog. My gun, the latter, a bit of a wall hanger I know. With a couple of friend's. A couple of brace on a winters day. Back to the farm house for a wonderful hot soup on the Arga. That was my day. Memorable. I will never forget those days. Then there was an episode that I experienced on a marsh near Acle, as dawn was breaking that I never forgot. I shot a bird, and its mate flew down to comfor its mortality wounded mate. It must surely have known the danger. A brace. I turned away. I have never picked up a gun since.

If you remember December 2010 it was incredibly cold one night -17°C was recorded. My late wife and I went for a walk on a snow covered Happisburgh Beach. To our dismay we counted the bodies of nearly a dozen Woodcock that had not made it across the North Sea from an even more frozen continent. Judith looked at me and said " if they had arrived you would be waiting for them with Dog and gun " . I also from that day never shot Wild Game again. In a good breeding year and this year has been dreadful, I would make an exception for a day on a Grouse Moor. But on my Pension only in my most distant dreams.
BroadAmbition
Todays the day at Loddington I ended up with 32 4’s & 3’s a slab of Black Storms was nearly £150 Purdey is up for it Griff
BroadAmbition
Well what a great day out that was. First time for me in over three years, it'll probably be another three years before I go out on a 'Paid Day' and here's why. The day cost us £950:00 each (Should have been about £1'600 which is why I was on it), Gamekeepers tip £60, cartridges £35, B'fast £15, road diesel £10 = £1'070 for ONE days shooting in the field. Some of our group went down yesterday evening and stayed in a local hotel, that along with dinner etc cost £200 on top. So the full price day with a stay over comes out at £1'920 Aside from that, Purdey had a great time, I shot 15 pheasants as I was being selective - I always am, but more memorable for me was I did get a Left & Right - It doesn't get any better than that Oh and I brought home two brace of oven ready pheasant for Christmas dinner, just need a few partridge now Griff
Luise
A couple of years ago I joined this Forum in order to pm Vaughan for advice as to whether to move my boat from the Broads - private toll increases disproportionate to hire craft, and the BA wonders why the numbers are decreasing - to Capestang or Colombiers on the Canal du Midi. Thanks Vaughan, I made the right choice and I still owe you that drink… I don’t really have much to contribute to the Forum, but perhaps an interesting tale for the shooters: to raise funds for “Pink October” our local range has an open weekend during which members bring along their personal weapons and the public can get to use them. They purchase the various ammunitions from the club at retail prices, the “profit” is given to breast cancer charities. It’s a great boost for membership of the gun club, a lot of money is made for a good cause, and even members have an opportunity to try different guns. Anyway, I was helping out, and a chap brought along a shotgun he wanted to dispose of urgently, having been informed that his Shotgun Certificate would NOT cover it. Because of the weapon’s capacity (seven rounds plus one up the spout), and I’m not even sure about the barrel’s length, it becomes a Section 1 weapon requiring a full FAC (Firearms Certificate). So I snatched it away from him for tuppence; well, not quite, the procedure is that today I was obliged to take it to a registered armourer for him to check the serial number and specifications and enter it on the government database of my registered weapons. And charge me 30 euro for doing it! I’ve no idea what I’m gonna do with a pump-action Winchester… the missus and I shoot target and metallic silhouette disciplines but I guess we’ll have a bit of noisy fun when I can source some sabot loads. It does look cool though! Peter (Luise is the name of the boat)

Capestang or Colombiers are both good spots on the canal with very few locks in the area. The canal has been very quiet these last 3 years, so more or less un-encumbered cruising! It does look cool though! Peter (Luise is the name of the boat) Looks very similar to the Franchi Spaz that I owned. The spaz was likewise a large magazine shotgun that could be switched between Pump Action & Semi-Auto. I foresaw the 1988 Ammendment Act and sold mine in Autumn 1987 following the tragedy of Hungerford. I lost over half the guns value but I reflected and supported the Ammendment because there is truly no purpose for the general public to own this type of gun, as it has no sporting field use what so ever. We used to set up a trap putting out continuous "Boulting Rabbit Clays" and rapid fire it at those.
