Broad Ambition - The Model

hinges being applied, they are being glued (carefully) and pinned (literally, using 0.7mm dia stainless steel pins) this involves drilling a 1mm hole through the hinge, and a 0.6mm hole through the wood, the pin is then tapped in place and the hinge is glued, then once the glue has set, the pins are cut down to 1mm through the wood and the end turned over.

well not happy with that windscreen I went out and cut some timber into strips ready to try again, this time in a red wood, I also progressed model #2 with a new plank shaped steamed and clamped.

then it was down to work a second time on the windscreen, the middle section #2, every length cut in pairs with a square across to ensure all of the shoulders are the same length, and checked for square.

well I dont believe it, after oh so carefully measuring everything and making sure it was all square, I managed to make the window short, I will just need to start it again. best to find out now rather than later I guess. anyway that plank I shaped yesterday has been glued up and clamped.

I have to admit to rushing this one a bit

Well stoppit - there ain't no rush, githisen a break man!

Re the windscreen frames, now you have plenty of teak in stock, just a suggestion - cut each frame out of some teak without any joints / clamping.  The full size version, I purchased a full sheet of genuine marine ply 25mm (It cost an arm and a leg even back then) and cut each frame out of that, then routed the reveals for the glass, therefore no joints etc.  It worked for us

and there was me admiring your work in making the windscreen frames. I was a bit dubious about making them from one piece as you then get short grain on the uprights, I may follow your example with the plywood, or I may try a better way of making the joints accurately.

not quite, they are the smallest piano hinges I can get (120mm long), each leaf of the hinge is about 6mm wide (about the equivalent of using a large door hinge with 2 1/2" screws to fit a cupboard door) these are specialist ones made for 1/12 scale doll houses but still a little large for scale.

well not a lot of work tonight, just gluing up the plank shaped yesterday, I was held up over an hour getting across the bridge at dartford due to a bad accident in the approach to the tunnel, it must have been a bad one as they had the green screens up to stop rubbernecking, yet it still held me up.

Early start this morning, these last two top planks wont get any shaping, plus since we have got away from the sharp curves at the bow, they dont need steaming either, so on with the glue and onto the model, clamped in place.

At present I am finishing this one side, then it will be the last 4 or 5 planks on the other side too.

in between planks I will be concentrating on that windscreen, so far this part has been a bit of a nemesis for me, with several attempts, but I am determined to get a good finished result, preferably with a jointed frame, but I might go with a plywood frame if I have to.

Its been sweltering indoors today, outside was worse, so progress was slow today, short bursts.

Still one side is finished planking, the other has about 4 or 5 planks left to do.

As well as that I have produced a blank for the windscreen the top edge still needs shaping, and the outer edges will need to be trimmed.

today has been a bit warm, so work has progressed slowly, the next set of planks have been sanded up (it was 33 degrees in the conservatory where I did that) the house has now risen to 30.6 degrees. but despite this a plank was shaped and steamed and clamped into place - just 3 more to go after this one.
