  1. I was recently executor to a friend's will. There was a carer who wasn't mentioned officially, but I knew Margaret wanted her to be remembered. The solicitor was fairly bewildered that I was determined to give away some of my personal small bequest to her, there was no legal requirement etc... The mechanism is called a 'Deed of Variation' determined by the beneficiaries, whereby part of the legacy could reach you and add financial security. It's a possibility.
  2. Daylight hours will be so much affected by cloud cover too that it sounds like you are cutting it a bit fine? Having Thursday as an insurance option is sensible of course.
  3. I'd suggest you buy a cow Chris, but the emissions are known to be problematic.
  4. I don't know, but Timbo is chanelling his inner Samurai on Royal Tudor.
  5. RYA , Robin? The courses are the best, and not just for sailies.
  6. I am relieved to hear they are optional!
  7. Briiliant will be stronger and stiffer as a result of this work,....then she will have to have a smart paint job.....argh!
  8. I was threatening MM with Kate's surgical skills Varnishing yes, painting? Oo oh that's a bit more scary!
  9. Which boat Vv? We are spending the week at St Mawes in early October and might think of a day's charter.
  10. Ohhh Trader looked beautiful! I loved the materials used to finish her, no acreage of white plastic.
  11. We look after Brilliant in summer and lift her out for the winter. It would be nice to keep her in for longer, but she is a woody and we live 2hours+ away.
  12. John, thoughts and prayers, best love.
  13. I think that you cannot own a boat and not maintain it. They live in a challenging environment and need to be kept on top of, maintenance wise.
  14. And leave you out of the 'internal surgery'?
  15. The RNLI seems to have its priorities well sorted, I am proud to be an Offshore Member.
  16. We are eliminating some short planks and doing internal 'surgery' so yes some stuff is coming out before it grows gills. Yes redefining said 'rabbet' to Phill made me translate it to 'rebate', no fluffy bunnies were harmed in the process.
  17. Argh, I don't need any special language to describe that! On the plus side, that caulking looks as fresh as a daisy. The bilge pumps generally are never busy on Brilliant.
  18. Hmmm...I lost my Nike Saily Hat aboard Chameleon and this was the thoughtful replacement sent by Uncle Mike and Aunty Pat. Not sure if it's really a wedding hat as such...
  19. Doug is undertaking a lot of work on Brilliant to get her frames and planks in best condition. We have bewildering conversations...... Timbo to the rescue! Like him, I have invested in Boatbuilding Manual (5th Edition). Unlike him, I wouldn't trust myself with a saw on Brilliant's hull, Japanese or otherwise. So I am in training to be an armchair boatbuilder. My aim is to make something approaching intelligent responses to Doug' s remarks! Actually, this is a super book! I think we should have got a copy years ago, because the why and wherefore of Brilliant's construction is very much explained here and it adds so much to the experience of having our beautiful saily. I always knew this boatbuilding thing was a bit of a dark art, and the language is just as complicated as that related to actually sailing her, but I am persevering....after 4 or 5 attempts , I finally figured out what a 'rabbet' was and mentally located ours! Happy days! Now just you watch Doug set a few hurdles!
  20. The Queen and Duke had a few years of normality on Malta before they got hit by the full monarchy thing. I'd guess they are trying to do the same here for William?
  21. I recently had a chat with someone who has known and worked with Upton Dyke for decades, and isn't at all convinced, good enough for me. Love your smart awning Poppy, BTW, that is one nice saily!
