  1. You wouldn't believe how many of these are on the London canal system these days!
  2. Aha.. methinks the Cap'n maybe a bit of a 2000AD fan?! Me too! We come up from London to holiday on boats and one of the nicest things about it is how safe you feel and how friendly everyone is.. Let's hope these perps meet the Broads version of Judge Dredd.. Soon!
  3. Brilliant, Robin! Have been dying for the next one to come out.. been a tad under the weather and your vlogs have been a highlight.. Note for next visit.. Roy's cocktail slushies... x
  4. We are going to be proper live-aboard "river-gipsies" in the next couple of years (can't wait!), and were chatting the other day... even when we live on a narrowboat we will STILL go to the broads on holiday! (sad or wot?!) There is a certain quality to the light, the huge skies, the dalliance with tidal waters, the isolation if you want it, the friendly Norfolk welcome if you don't! Mud-weighting overnight, watching the wildlife... I know the BA aren't perfect - but overall i think the broads have been pretty well-managed..
  5. I had this, and found a session with an Osteopath very useful.. you STILL have to take it easy tho..! Hope you feel better soon..
  6. Would like to add our congratulations too, i was so impressed with your team on both occasions we've been - you guys totally deserve this! Now if you could only develop a team of "troubleshooters" to go and sort out the rest of British Industry's customer care...!
  7. We just "yesterday" went past the Rising Sun to have an explore.. About 500 yards past it gets very tight so we bottled it and span round whilst we could! Having said that - we did see a lot of fish in the water and a pair of kingfishers - so we deemed it worthwhile! , Jane and Jon

    Bridge Pilots

Can anyone tell me if these times include Sundays? Many thanks! Jane xx
  10. Mine will be adorning Little Lettuce (Petite Gem!) between 4th and 11th October - many thanks! Jane x
  11. We're hiring Petite Gem again - we like to call her "Little Lettuce"! Last time was my first time on the broads, i found her so easy to drive that within a couple of days we elected to nip off darn sarf - many thanks to the lovelies on the phone at GYYS for helping this amateur with crossing times etc! To increase our confidence even further, we're playing it safe and going with the same boat - next year we will probably try one of the lovely wood ones from Marthams Jane and Jon (only got less than 3 weeks to wait!)
  12. Charles - you are a star! (think next year's first hire is sorted!)
  13. Welcome Charles and many thanks for that excellent information! We really wanted to get past PH in June, but the pilots said no - Horsey Mere is number one on my list - so plz do bang on to your heart's content! I used to go in the north sea - but only in full drysuit diving kit! (oh and Wells-next-the-Sea when i was 14!) Have seen a few of Marthams wooden boats, they do look lovely, but the OH is 6'2" and even though he says he's used to his feet hanging off the end, i'm not sure if it would be fair!? Would love to hire one tho!
  14. Wow - many thanks for all these fab ideas - google can be your friend here, but there's no substitute for folks real experience! Much food for thought, and most walks include beer! Even when we're in london we do like to go for "yomps" as we call them.. Robin - have you ever wandered the london canal system? It's actually pretty interesting - from the posh bits on the regents canal (london zoo area - not often you get to see baboons from a canal boat) to the sometimes "innovative" liveaboards on the lea river! Many thanks all!
  15. Now that looks nice, what are the cockshoot dyke moorings like? We went in June and you could still smell the new paint! Nice beer, we didn't eat as the OH loves the challenge of on-board cooking! (how lucky am i??) !
  16. Ian, There looks to be a few nice walks around those moorings..
  17. Hi Lovely Forumites! We're having another week on Petite Gem, 4-11 October and we're counting the days (literally!). We'll be staying north this time as the tides aren't really favorable for a jaunt "darn sarf" this week.. We'd like to do some nice afternoon walks, chug in the morning, moor up at lunchtime and walkies in the afternoon. One i'd really like to do do is a wander across to the coast from West Somerton or Horsey - if we can get under that bridge of course! What are your favorite walks (accessible from moorings) on the Northern Broads? Gang! Jane x
  18. ........Especially if Jon is going to be making his special chilli!
  19. Strange you should say this - i have this open on another tab! Indeed, the tide times do not seem favorable for a jaunt south on this occasion, sadly - as i really enjoyed the Breydon crossing - esp on the way back as it was a tad choppy! But thanks for the thought tho, there will be other times i'm sure!
  20. Stalham - we're going on Petite Gem (or "Little Lettuce" as we've affectionately renamed her!) Was v impressed with Ricos in June.. Also like to thank the folk on this forum John - the "inside knowledge" we managed to glean before our first trip made our week so much more chilled and enjoyable!
  21. The "center line" is regularly used on narrowboats as a mooring aid, it's crucial on a nb to have it attached at the "pivot point" or things can go a bit wrong - don't ask me how i kno this! It's also not used as a tight mooring line on "the cut", as this line is attached to the roof, and if the wind gets up a tight center line can result in a fair amount of "rolling" as it tightens! More as a "belt & braces" slack "safety" line really.. We're back on the broads on the 4th Oct for a week.. thanks for this thread, i tend to be the one mooring and Jon tends to the lines.. with his extra-long legs he can do the "controlled step" onto the bank with ease! I was pretty happy with my mooring technique in June - but methinks there may be a tad more wind about in October!
  22. Leatherman, Head torch battery led "pea lights" for ambient lighting (+ boat battery saving!) Thermals Coffee + (turkish) coffee maker (metal = unbreakable! Iphone nope, not just you! ETA and brandy for the coffee!
  23. Looks great! May i ask, how is the bed for length.. my OH is rather tall..
  24. Lovely, Robin! We live near Greenwich so i get to do this quite often, the speed of these boats is quite awesome.. And just a quick thanks for all the Broads vids, they were quite instrumental in us making the decision to have our first ever Broads holiday, starting.... Tomorrow!!!!!
