  1. ok i decided that there is no way that i am going to cover any of the helms chair up with upholstery, there is too much chance of ruining it, so, i decided that the seat needs to be shaped for the users posterior, out with the miniature flap wheel and two shallow grooves were made in the seat, then the beech dowels needed darkening up. So out with the teak stain, and onto the beech doweling, i am happy as this instantly improves the visual appearance of the seat.
  2. sorry i just added to my reply, re adding a link, basically if you are going to quote huge chunks its good to attribute them to the source with a link. this then enables people to go to the horses mouth so to speak
  3. Bill, it would have been better if you just posted a link to the above - https://www.facebook.com/gretathunbergsweden/posts/recently-ive-seen-many-rumors-circulating-about-me-and-enormous-amounts-of-hate-/767646880269801/ then people could have read it in the original context, and with the full text remember in speakers corner :- Support your argument. If you refer to a document make sure you list that document in the 'library thread' and link to that entry in your post so that everyone has access to the full document.
  4. well for some strange reason the boot fair had been cancelled, so its back to watching youtube restoration videos and replacing the burnt out soldering iron on my solder station (i found one of my old soldering irons yesterday this enables me to go forward.
  5. winds blowing some strong gusts here, I will be off in half an hour or so to see if the boot fair has been blown away, no sign of damage, but the wind through the trees is noisy.
  6. I am glad you can see the difference, i was worried that i was being finnicky when i decided to be more careful over the second one and fix what i saw as the errors in the first, i knew i could do better, thats what bugged me. plus i could see the seat back was too chunky so i slimmed down the width and thickness of the back, as well as slimming the size of the seat. i can be happy with not perfect, but not if i havent done my best when i know i can do better.
  7. this morning it was back onto seat construction, the holes are drilled in the seat and base for the legs, dry assembled to align everything, then a level was marked for the front stretchers, dropped slightly and then the side stretchers, then it was assembly, one stretcher at a time allowing the glue to dry between work. once all the stretchers had been glued, the seat was glued in place, then the base, and finally the back was fitted, this is a thinner back, so there wasnt a lot of spare wood around the 2.5mm holes, I am a lot happier about this chair, here are the two to compare, then in place in the model, being modelled by rogue (one of a batch of 1/12 scale x men figures i picked up at the boot fair to be repainted for use on the model). finally a shot of my work area, just so you can see where i perform these miniature feats.
  8. Cleaning? it looks more like chatting and giving guided tours of BA.
  9. it will do the old girl good to have some time out and about, also it will be good for yourself and mrs G to reconnect after the last few months of looking after her mum.
  10. thats fine, by the time i have finished with a car theres not enough left to sell on to anyone, most get used as parts donor cars for the next one.
  11. not unless they are supplied by some means other than the national grid, the infrastructure isnt in place to charge electric vehicles for more than about 1 in 50 cars on the road at present, a radical clean technology leap needs to happen for that to become a possibility.
  12. I may get in later, but currently just arrived at a&e with mother in law in tow, with a damaged wrist,
  13. we had this twice on the lads week last year, both dogs after a change of mooring took a flying leap off the boat to where the land had last been seen, one straight off the stern at full speed.
  14. i am working on a map of the broads, currently it is a work in progress, but as I pass moorings they are being added to the map, it will eventually be uploaded as a forum resource, attached are a couple of sample sections, the bigger rivers have a correspondingly bigger file, the entire map is currently 22Mb Ant Sheets -14-06-19.pdf Thurne Sheets-14-06-19.pdf Waveney Sheets-14-06-19.pdf
  15. IMHO that post deserves one of the biggest ‘likes’ possible! except we are overdue to have tipped over into an ice age (usually preceded by a period of warmth). what if our pollution was the only thing that had prevented a new ice age, wouldnt we look silly then if we stopped the pollution. actually a lot of climate events are overdue, ice ages, magnetic flips etc.
  16. must have been the attraction of all those attractive wooden boats that caused it
  17. except for the fact that speakers corner is just as open as the rest of the forum to general viewing, its just that this has turned into a debate, so this is where it belongs.
  18. perfect time for a quick costal trip on independence
  19. it is sometimes very difficult when you throw a light hearted comment into the mix when the discussion is in the middle of an ongoing debate, as quite often some of the rest of the participants arnt thinking in a light hearted manner, and the humorous witticism falls flatter than a pancake as they havnt spotted the smiley or come to the conclusion that the post was light hearted when they respond. witness my post in another thread that upset Vaughan where I casually threw in a witticism, only to have it backfire on me (apologies were proffered afterward once i realised my error). perhaps we should have a no joking rule in speakers corner (just kidding)((oops done it again))
  20. I cant wait to see Timbos response to that
  21. I have just moved this thread into speakers corner as that seems a better location for this topic to be discussed.
  22. I think the issue here is more that the eco warrior types who go round protesting, dont do any favours for the resolution of the problem, I would rather see those who go around picking up litter from beaches and rivers and leading by example, than those who cause great disruption to others and try and force their ideals down others throats, this second method never works as it just makes those affected more stubborn. the first method can make people stop and think. As for Greta, good luck to her, but her methods seem to be encouraging the former group above, not the ones who show by example in a more peaceful manner.
  23. Actually thats not quite as silly as it sounds, there is a version of the sterling engine that would be powerful enough to run a boat. I have actually been looking into this - Stirling engines are external combustion engines , you heat the cylinder up and this causes transfer of gasses to activate the piston, the main issue with them is they are best at running at a constant speed, not slowing down and speeding up, but they could be used to power a generator which could charge the batteries for an electric vehicle. you could burn hydrogen gas to heat the cylinders, and power outputs are comparable to steam engines (but dont require the vast amounts of water to turn into steam), you might need to cool the cold end of the engine to achieve best performance, but here boats have a great advantage.
