  1. I think that’s very true in all walks of life. A person’s attitude will very often determine the outcome of a situation. I remember reporting a guy being absolutely thoughtless on Breydon a few years ago. I told the BA ranger that I hoped a quiet word would do the trick and his reply was ‘we’ll see what his attitude is like’. It must be a nightmare running a hire boatyard. Most clients will be happy and cheerful to be going on holiday but there will always be one or two who expect too much and actually like to be confrontational.
  2. Hylander - I think we may be showing our ages! 🥺
  3. Fleet Dyke moorings are northern rivers. Rockland Short Dyke is where the moorings are in the south. I believe the ‘long’ dyke to Rockland is known as The Fleet and there are no moorings along that stretch.
  4. You don’t need video evidence surely to just say ‘you were apparently seen doing xyz’, if the persons involved denied it then at least they would have been warned that others take an interest in what goes on around the broads and might be more careful in future. A shot across the bows so to speak . Exactly.
  5. I think if we are able to get boat details and report these foolish and thoughtless (and in some cases downright dangerous) incidents to the BA, we will be helping them in their safety campaign. It relies on the BA taking action, either by intercepting the boat, contacting the owner or contacting the boatyard and asking them to contact their clients and warn them that they have been reported as doing something unacceptable or dangerous. Now I have no idea if this is something that the BA would want, maybe Tom/BA could comment?
  6. Are you able to pass the relevant details on to the BA?
  7. I’ve found that even at a legal speed they throw moored boats around.
  8. As far as I’m concerned it is, as well as the other occupants of the vehicle. 🐶
  9. Some of the worst boats for creating wash are the Broom Captains, Explorers etc. Plus NYA’s elite boats. (Maybe the elite boats are allowed to go faster as they cost more? )
  10. The airline situation came to my mind too. However, in the case of business class you are paying hundreds if not thousands of £s in extreme cases so should definitely expect more. I suppose it’s the same in many things these days, pay more and expect more.
  11. I have little experience of boats with more than one loo, do they all empty into one tank? I would have thought the really large boats had two holding tanks but really have no idea. Thinking about your ‘problem’, I wonder if some of the older boats may have larger holding tanks. If ours can go 2 weeks (and it is an old boat) but some of the newer models need mid-week pumpout, maybe they are installing smaller tanks these days. Just a thought.
  12. But have to make sure it doesn’t tip in the car……….
  13. Definitely not for hirers. The recommendation is for boat owners only.
  14. I notice from fb that Pacific Sky is available (due to a cancellation) for one week from 6 August for £925 + £75 diesel. That sounds like a bargain to me bearing in mind some of the prices being quoted here. Bet it won’t be available for long!
  15. Jabsco do a toilet cleaner that doesn’t react with the blue. It’s very effective. We hired Shimmering Light when it was a new boat many years ago and the electric flush was a fairly new concept. The gauge was showing full every couple of days and it was a real pain getting pumped out. I can’t ever remember getting pumped out midweek on any other hire boats when out for a week but there were just the two of us. On our own boat now we can go 2 weeks between pumpouts but usually just leave it 10 days.
  16. I remember Fleurie! Along with Sancerre and Chablis etc. That’s a blast from the past!
  17. Thanks PaulN, that’s interesting. The OH always takes care of plugging in etc so I’ll pass this on to him. I’ll ignore your comment on girls reading instructions and ruining all the fun for you guys!
  18. In our hiring days, a while ago now admittedly, it was always 3 or 4pm. I used to phone the boatyard to see if we could take over any earlier and more often than not it was ok. I think a lot of people still do that although these Covid times have probably scuppered the idea to a large extent.
  19. I usually get ours from the BA information place in Wroxham (Hoveton!). We’re very similar to that and invariably find ample left on the post. There have been times when there has been £1+ on the post so I guess someone has not checked before adding their card. Beccles is a strange one, not BA of course. You put as much cash as you want on one of their own cards, however, what you don’t use is lost as they apparently ‘zeroise’ each post on a daily basis.
  20. Bound to be a success. Nice to see an independent boatyard still making waves
  21. The worst thing, I think, is the wash created by some boats. It’s clear some helms, both private and hire, have absolutely no idea what sort of wash their boat is making and have no conception of slowing down when passing moored boats. They’re within the speed limit (just) so that’s ok. Interestingly, we were at Reedham a couple of weeks ago when the ranger there shouted at a private helm to slow down. He got a mouthful back to the effect that the boat wasn’t speeding and suggested the helm looked at his wash. Seeing all the moored boats rocking around the helm looked sheepish and said ‘point taken mate’ and slowed.
  22. Some do, some don’t. Some couldn’t care less about rules. I think private boat owners and experienced hirers mostly know the rules and mostly obey them. Not all though by any means, particularly on your first point - speeding!
  23. Reopening Friday 6 August according to EDP.
