  1. Carole - can you give a description of the boat to a BA Ranger? That may be one way to find out if it is registered etc. I feel sure the boat/owner will be known to the BA and if they were causing a disturbance, that of course is a bye-law offence as Loddon staithe is a BA mooring. Worth a try I would have thought.
  2. The trouble is that many of these young jihadists were born and brought up in this country. Psychicsurveyor said 'If they choose to go abroad to join a proscribed group then that is a one way trip.' It most certainly should be but somehow they get back into this country again. As much as I feel anger at all of this, I also feel despair. Despair that we don't seem to have any answers. We are told that some of these people have been on a 'watch list' but nothing has been done with that information, as far as we know anyway. We are supposed to have some of the best Security Forces in the world and I am sure there are many foiled attempts that we never get to hear about, but this seems to have been such a simple way of creating carnage and causing such hurt. There will, I feel sure, be more attempts as time goes on and we all have to be on permanent alert. I recently read Lee Child's 'Gone Tomorrow', one of his Jack Reacher stories. The first few chapters involves a suicide bomber and describes 11 ways in which such a person can be spotted. The book is fiction of course but nevertheless a useful read.
  3. That's what a forum is all about and why so many different topics end up being discussed. No need to apologise, I just wish I understood what the dickens you are all saying!
  4. Couldn't agree more, lots of lovely old black and white masterpieces. Admittedly some of them were probably 'B' movies but entertaining movies nevertheless. Not so sure about 'those of us of and beyond a certain age' though - unless of course that age would be 30. (I wish!)
  5. I wonder how many folk have logged in expecting to read an interesting thread on Irstead Staithe?!! Instead they have found Welsh lessons!
  6. As the boat had a previous short visit toll, maybe it has to be registered in person as it is to become a permanent Broads vessel. Just a thought.
  7. Quite noticeable when you get on them too, even a half hour before leaving there is that deep boom from the bowels (the ship's, not mine before anybody asks!)
  8. But I reckon you are a big softie really Speedtriple!
  9. I'm not sure I understand quite why it is a problem if folk do want to stay on their moorings. Each to their own surely? Boating to me certainly means getting out and about with a different mooring every night but I guess there are some who like to 'pose' on their craft and probably some who only use the boat as a sort of holiday cottage.
  10. Welcome to the empty pockets club! Looks a lovely boat, congrats.
  11. I still count the hours, even though I'm up on the Broads for many weeks during the year! I hope you have a super time Bob and the weather is kind to you. Tell us all about it when you return, all the nitty gritty details.
  12. Now that really put a different slant on things! It rather takes it all back to what is probably 'the norm'! Never mind, at least it was a talking point for a short while.
  13. Answer? Because they would lose their YS mooring. Simples.
  14. What a superb write-up, you clearly have the gift of making a story both interesting and enjoyable. At times I almost felt I was on board with you! The scores table makes interesting reading too, particularly the White Horse at Neatishead which very often gets rave reviews. A somewhat mixed bag from your group. As a vegetarian, Barbara seems to have enjoyed her food most of all, I often get the impression that vegetarians are difficult to impress when eating out but that was evidently not the case for her. (That's assuming I have read the table correctly and not misunderstood where it may have gone wonky!) Thank you for taking the time to do this write-up and review, I am sure many others will find the information useful.
  15. Too late, the lady in question has gone! The warden chappie is still there though..................
  16. I believe you are not the only one who does that, there is a certain someone on here that has to do the same thing! I do wonder if, as a society, we are getting less forgiving. I keep giving myself a real talking to these days when I find myself grumbling about the things some people do. If it is something that is not directly affecting me, or will not affect me for very long, then why should I worry? Life is too short and the time I have left needs to be enjoyed! Like this and this .
  17. I'm afraid that's beyond me now, having a simple female mind I can only cope with a little technical detail at a time!
  18. If it has been necessary to use a bow thruster whilst mooring, the engine does need to be run for a SHORT while to recharge the associated battery. I suppose now the usual banter about the necessity, or otherwise, of bow/stern thrusters will start!
  19. I've just remembered that we were mooring up at Irstead (BA moorings) a few years back, in the days before the electric post was installed. We had left the engine running while we sorted ourselves out and 'that lady' came rushing out and asked us to turn the engine off as she had friends round for lunch and it was disturbing them. The property did change hands last year so I guess she must have eventually had enough of noisy engines and fumes and moved. I wonder if she told the prospective purchasers of the horrors of noisy and smelly boaters!
  20. Lots of ideas as to what the problem might be. SwanR, will you be giving a prize to the person giving the correct answer? Hope it is sorted for you quickly and you can be on your way safely again.
  21. There definitely is a sign. It is actually closer to and facing the car park and cannot be seen from the river, which admittedly is a bit daft. We stopped at Irstead (pc side) last week and when we passed yesterday afternoon both sides were empty.
  22. I'm sad to say that I saw this and when the question was asked, my mind immediately went to Southfork and JR! Luckily I recovered quite quickly and realised that was not the answer. My excuse was that I was cooking at the time and didn't really take in the question properly.

As long as possible I would say. When we used to hire, I was continually looking for ways to extend a week into 10 days. When we finally managed a two week holiday I thought it would 'kill or cure'. It did neither, just made me want more! Now we are retired, have our own boat and spend weeks at a time doing just what we love. As you seem similarly addicted, watch out, the bug has bitten and it won't let go! Enjoy your forthcoming trip.
  24. Jill's photos were some of the best I have ever seen of Broadland. Very sad to hear of her passing.

    Thurne Lion

I think I read somewhere that there was a dispute between the landowner and the BA over refuse disposal and that was holding things up. That may have been the old moorings though which have now entirely gone anyway. I could have cried last week when I saw the diggers at work removing the last of the quay heading. (I think this a tearful emoticon!)
