  1. Just looking at Horning sailing clubs web cams apart from the water being amazingly still in the sun set, the water is just over the quay heading.
  2. All most all waterways below Acle and the southern broads up as far as Thorpe are now showing Severe Flood Warning (the highest level)
  3. TheQ

    Snow

They've now closed Norwich airport due to snow, until 13:00 when the next decision will be made.

    Snow

Heavy snow now reported all over Norfolk, I can see it over the airport, and on the web cams on the broads, whether or not it will settle overnight we have yet to see..
  5. They are getting very worried about Caister / GY at the moment with several Severe Flood warnings, they are evacuating 5000 homes, and are most worried about tonights high tide due 22:00 to 23:00. so the peak tide would be 03:00 in Horning.
  6. 5000 properties are being evacuated from this morning in Caister and GY.
  7. Thinking about it. Some of the middle speed range boats, if they are in one of the early starts, will, if there is a good wind, will go direct to Acle against the tide, then up with the remaining tide to Hickling and try to do the two short legs on the way back. Those that get the tides right, win the race, if you can do the race in 2 or 3 tides you stand a chance. This is where the slow boats have a problem, they always need 4 tides, which means being on the water overnight when the wind drops and you often end up hanging onto the reeds to stop being washed back down river.
  8. The competitors can go round the turning points in any order. from Horning to... The turning points . Ludham bridge but turning in the slightly wider bit before the bridge round a bouy, NOT going under it. A bouy IN South Walsham Broad, A bouy ON Hickling Broad, Normally up Near the sailing club ( it's handy for us to go and get some chips during the night....) A bouy below Acle bridge, Normally the Stracy arms (Hindu temple now?), but it could be just past the bridge if there is no wind or another mile or two below Stracy if the weather and tides are perfect. With the start this year being near high tide if there is any sort of decent wind, the fast boats are likely to do: From Horning to Ludham to South Walsham to Hickling to Acle and back to Horning the rest are likely to do: From Horning to Ludham to South Walsham to Stracy to Hickling and back to Horning. Of course if there are light winds or delays to the start , then anything can happen as everyone recalculates their best route round....
  9. That woke you up, no it's not early this year, this is a quick heads up for those interested in competing, I've just been chatting with the organiser. So here's the confirmed information. Race date 3rd and 4th June 2017 First Start 11:00 near High Tide!!! Entry forms will be going out early February after the next 3RR committee meeting. If you weren't in last years race but wish to be, then some time in early February, the entry form On the Horning Sailing Club website /3 rivers/ entry forms, should be updated to the 2017 version. I'll be counting you all round the Hickling Mark...
  10. I've just checked HSC web cams (click on horning sailing club / 3 rivers race /web cams) and there is plenty of room for more water, of course they are GY tides + 4hours. Oh and they are racing radio controlled yachts at the moment..
  11. Not yet they're not https://flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk/map. The warning for some areas around Southwold and Felixstowe is the next level up... expect flooding... If you think this storm is expected to track down the North sea on Friday I think the alerts will be higher by then. It's blowing 38 at Norwich airport and Weybourne at the moment which is just into gale force.
  12. I was taught to write like that at my first primary school, unfortunately the next primary school forced me to change to up and down straight writing, hence my writing has wandered between the two ever since and is generally a mess. Mean time, Keep up the postings Timbo It's most interesting...
  13. Welcome to the Site, Another Elysian owner here, those few jobs seem to grown and get bigger...
  14. Thanks , it's a disputed matter, because Rous-Marten didn't publish the records straight away, it was only discovered later, it's thought GWR did not want it published for fear for frightening the customers...
  15. Not on the NDR there doesn't seem to be a lot of work gone on on that for the last fortnight, But the Horning Road at the Hoveton mini roundabouts has signs on it saying road closed.
  16. There are many who would dispute that, so here's a quick quote from Wiki to save my typing. City of Truro was timed at 8.8 seconds between two quarter-mile posts whilst hauling the "Ocean Mails" special from Plymouth to London Paddington on 9 May 1904. This timing was recorded from the train by Charles Rous-Marten, who wrote for The Railway Magazine and other journals. If exact, this time would correspond to a speed of 102.3 mph (164.6 km/h); but Rous-Marten's stopwatch read in multiples of  1⁄5 second, so the next possible longer time it could register was 9 seconds, corresponding to exactly 100 mph
  17. Also definately don't go between any red or green (traffic cone shaped) bouys, or thin yellow posts (2X2 inches squares, several feet long) and the bank. Thats the Broads authority marking an obstruction normally close to the bank.
  18. It depends on the boat and the local Knowledge, during the 3 rivers race a couple of years ago, a broads sailing cruiser spent most of the night hard aground, just off of the channel near the sharpest point in the bend up to the sailing club (seaward side), where as others sailed past either side of him. Of course you might not Know what depth other boats draw. As someone in a Yeoman drawing 3 ft found out, when I sailed over the Stokesby slipway in a bilge keel boat drawing 18 inches and they came to a sudden halt behind me. The broad has had some dredging lately, particularly up by the sailing club and the mud banks will move around /slide into the dredged channel giving a general increase in depth both sides of the channel markers.
  19. Why do you think it's called a joystick?
  20. Quiet often, They did exactly that soon as the wheels were up. left the ground
  21. Are the Engraved intials anything to do with your family? if not then Uncle Albert picked it up much later in it's life.
  22. Was there any truth in the roumer that the Yorkshire earthquake was the cause of yesterdays Borads flood warnings?
  23. Flood warnings have been issued for the Southern Broads https://flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk/target-area/054FWTBT2A
  24. One of the other Fora I frequent has the below, (each reader can only use one per post) Like, Agree, Thanks, Craftmanship / clever, Informative, Funny, Friendly / Supportive. I must admit I like that range of expressions, much more indicative of how people think, and you are inclined to use more.
  25. Actually Poor old Odin was not very bright, and because he was always out with Baron, we used to call them in shouting Baron Odin..... Odin didn't realize his name was Odin but would only turn up if we shouted both names Not just Odin (or Ody)
