  1. Agree with Ron. From memory the track from the Staithe to the road is a bit rough and the road into Neatishead is a minor unlit country road. A good torch is an absolute must after dark. You would be ready for a pint though! Superb pub, well worth the visit. As Ron says Neatishead Staithe is nearer. Enjoy! Sorry just seen your other post - yes, Gays Staithe is easier (more room) so if you don't mind the walk it should be good. Bit quieter end of Sept too I imagine.
  2. Great tale and photos, many thanks for sharing. Also glad to hear you've been supporting the local hostelries Another Bridgecraft fan here too - excellent service and a very friendly yard.
  3. Hear, hear, good luck indeed Just wish I lived a bit closer.
  4. Good grief, that is expensive. I don't normally drink Broadside so haven't really noticed but that seems a lot. We were in Huddersfield at the weekend and paying around 2.80 for some superb beers. I don't object to paying more for the Broads experience but I suppose you have to draw the line somewhere. I can't remember the exact prices in the Waveney a few years back but I distinctly remember thinking it was below average.
  5. Hi Ray, indeed I believe our esteemed member Barry (Springsong) actually sold it too. However that wasn't the original from The S and P Barrack Street brewery which I think closed in the late 60's early 70's. it was an imitation produced by Watneys in the King street brewery. They did Bullards Mild as well which was also an imitation of the old brewery. happy days! (off topic as usual, sorry)
  6. Here you go. A former Steward and Patteson pub.
  7. Very sad to see any pub closing. It annoys me when pubs don't allow dogs but I suspect it goes much deeper than this. I seem to remember the Waveney being a popular pub. We always went in the lounge but the bar always seemed very lively. The beer prices back in the day were some of the most reasonable on the Broads. However when I last went in, during February, they were advertising Doombar at 3.60 a pint. Now I wouldn't drink Doombar if it was free, but 3.60 is a bit on the high side even for the Broads. The Commodore seems popular especially with the younger set and the Wherry will always do well because of its location and facilities. On the other hand the Lady of the Lake never seems to have many in when I've been there. The locals might be going to the Flying Dutchman, I don't know. Perhaps the Waveney was getting a bit tired and not really having the appeal that modern drinkers seem to look for. But its a shame, one less pub and less choice.
  8. Well done Mr Thomson! It seems amazing that a 'public' body can seemingly do as it likes. They must be accountable in some way surely?
  9. Only 2 active as far as I'm aware but there's a former pub, Garden House??
  10. Ha, ha Mrs Nog's with you 100% with the shoes Grace but could be mutiny on the high rivers with the hair dryer
  11. Mrs N has just bought a book which made me think of Grace :-) The lady on the front looks very like her too (Grace that is)
  12. No, not Carling or Carlsberg I see the Hotel Wroxham are getting a bit keen aren't they? I'm off to hide behind the sofa now...
  13. Unfortunately both Summercraft and Silverline have immaculate looking boats but their customer interface can sometimes be a bit flakey. That boat, I think, is an Aquafibre Pearl???? I think several yards have them, in fact I'm sure Royalls (now BB) had a couple which may be another option. I think if it were me I'd take my custom elsewhere (IMHO of course) :-)
  14. I think we've frightened the OP off! Seriously I wonder if this thread could be split. The first dozen or so replies are relevant to the OP' s enquiry but then we start going off on one about fuel prices. Just my 2p as usual
  15. I bet the OP wonders what he has started!
  16. Another point to mention is that the amount yards charge 'extra' for fuel is part of their hire costings, they are not taking the proverbial, it's simply if you didn't pay for the fuel you would pay more for the hire charge. As I'm a light user of fuel I actually think the reverse ie I'm getting value from the yard. As others have said, I'm out to enjoy my holiday, not spending it queuing for fuel. In all my 40 years on the Broads I have never failed to get a refund on the fuel. Just my 2p :-)
  17. Hi Karl and welcome. With respect I wouldn't bother topping up. You have plenty of fuel on board and its a small boat. You would save buttons by buying fuel elsewhere and for all the hassle I'm not sure its worth it. Herbert Woods may not be too happy either. We go with them every year in February and usually get around half of our deposit back. The decision is yours of course.
  18. Is this the one? Runs on the GY and Lowestoft lines.
  19. Quite possibly. Without checking the timetable I don't think there are quite as many as 6 per hour. The traffic on that road always seems very heavy.
  20. I think as others have said, people have a different take on things so I'm sure no criticism was intended. it looked quite busy to me but bear in mind this is the view I'm more used to! Also there is maybe 150 metres of river in that shot from the camera but because of its elevated position it looks more compressed. However I'm still looking forward to December (and the way it is today I bet the weather will be better too)!!!
  21. Interesting and worrying reading JM! I do wonder though, could not Broadland Council complain, in the strongest terms, possibly through their Chief Executive to the Secretary of State? Seems a very unsatisfactory state of affairs. I cant profess to understand it properly but it sounds like the Authority are acting ultra vires?
  22. We have our own Christmas CD which we always have on when we are out in December including this classic :-)
  23. Hi Meg, pretty much the same thing - air draft is just the more technical name. Very few hire boats have an air draft of 6' 4' - an air draft of 6' 10" is more common but even with this Potter Heigham could be tricky, not a lot is getting through these days. Should be fine for the other bridges though (apart from Thorpe and Beccles Old at high tide)
  24. That's good news about the Buck, thanks for the heads up Mark. I've always liked it, proper pub with character. I'll definitely make a point of popping in as soon as I get the chance.
