Smellyloo! Imagine twenty years down the line when all our little 25 to 30ft stinkies have gone to that boatyard in the sky, the Broads will be full of 45ft ex Richo's boats there won't be any room for raggies or anything else on the Broads, Now a question one of you raggies might be able to answer for me! I'm based on the Ant so travel it a lot, one thing thats always puzzled me is why do raggies try to sail it, it's narrow with trees both side at best there's a very very light breeze on it, yet everytime I'm out I see raggies tacking every five feet going nowhere with the sails just flapping, I realise that not all of them have engines but even ones with them do it, I once moored at Irstead Staith and watched one of CB's raggies take twenty minutes to go past he must have tacked 30 times and he had his engine running but not in gear, what am I missing here? because if it was me I'd be under engine untill I reached Barton or the main river,

I must read the whole thread because I thought it was about stinky owners now I have no real love for raggies apart from they look nice, but if you think that attitude only applies to raggies you really need to get out on the water a bit more, I've been a private stinky owner on the Broads for 35 years and the worst offenders for all of the above have been private stinky owners, I much prefer the gentle swish of a raggie going past to my cup of tea or my dinner in my lap when a stinky going hell for leather goes past, or when I'm doing 4mph and for some reason they just have to be in front cutting up boats coming the other way and me having to take avioding action because they just couldn't wait five minutes, like with raggies there's only a few bloody minded ones out there, trouble is they are the ones we remember and give the rest a bad name, so Pot, Kettle, Black comes to mind here, just follow the instructions of the man in the little boat and everythings normally fine,,

Depending on the Reed bed it dosn't actualy take a lot of speed to get that far up the bank, don't judge them just yet it may simply be their steering went, it happened to me many years ago in a 25ft Seamaster doing 4mph and all that was showing of my boat was the last three foot of the stern, and it was pretty scary as I was new to boating, if it proves to be an error on their part then then back to normal and we can all laugh at them,,

We have an iPad and my Samsung on the boat, the Samsung is definately better than the iPad but baterry life on both is dire, usualy a couple of hours, what I'd like is a small laptop that can be charged from 12v

I used to do a similar thing in my Cars before they came with built in alarms, I used to fit a small red flashing light from Halfords and fit it in my dash and put alarmed stickers in the side windows, never had a car nicked even though a few neighbours did, so the don't know if it is or not alarmed theory does work in detering them, Meant to say you can buy similar ones like Robins from E/Bay for around £3.00

Must admit when I read that my first thought was is wasn't kids, I love mooring there and just by luck because I wanted to take some short videos, I went and bought a Car Cam from E/bay for £19 if I put in a 32 gb memory card it can record up to 14hrs continiuos, so it will be recording overnight when I moor anywhere dodgy, I can't expect too much for £19 but it's 1080 full HD with low light level night vision but even if it deters someone it will be worth the money,,

Well! Thats exactly what I just bought to replace my other one, I went for it because it's a sealed unit and know that if my grandkids or anyone else uses my boat there's no chance of them removing the battery, the reason I changed to the digital is that the little green light on my other one is hard to see, but I do check it everytime I'm on theboat, at least now with the digital PPM screen I can see at a glance, I got mine from Wick's for £29.00 but if anyone is interested I just found this on Amazon for £18.00,, FIREANGEL

I have one fitted on my boat and it's always the first thing I fit on any boat of mine, I aslo have two solar vents, one taking in air and the other taking it out, they are solar rechargable so still work when the Sun goes down, I have a petrol engine and my alarm will go off if the wind is from behind the boat, as it blows the fumes in and it's one reason why I leave the cabin door open when on the move or the engine is running, and the front hatch slightly open to blow any fumes through, I think the main question we have to ask ourselves is are our lives worth more than the £15/£20 an alarm cost, I know mine is!! on the BSC I can't see them making it compulsory unless they are sealed units, I know quite a few people that have them on their boats or in the home and the first time they go off they just take the battery's out, I'd like to find a hard wired one that can be fitted on the boat but I don't think they make one yet,,

I'm not knocking the £132 as every little bit helps, I'm just saying I think it would have been a lot more if more people knew about the event, I didn't realise you were a one man band so well done for even getting that far, now I know about the event I'll be there next year with the rest of my tribe, there are several Broads based forums and Facebook groups for the Broads and for something like that I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you put a link to the event on them, If you can send me a link to the trust I'll put it on my Daughters facebook group, and have a word with another large group as I'm sure the would put it on theirs,, Frank,,,

If Peter hadn't put it on here I wouldn't have known anything about it and I live in Oulton Broad, even then I thought it was last weekend, it was only when I drove past and saw the lifeboats I realised it was this weekend and as I had planned other things I couldn't visit, I'm quite amazed it only raised £132.00 if it had been advertised a bit better and maybe a bit early it could have raised more, I have family local that said they would have gone if they knew about it, but even my daughter that belongs to every Lowestoft/Oulton ans Suffolk forum knew nothing about it,,

Thanks Vaughan! I couldn't remember what it was called, now I know it's the excitor, when I fitted my new 70amp alternator it did say in the destructions it dosn't cut in under 1800revs,,

Sorry to disagree Robin but RPM can and does affect charging if your not carefull, with most modern alternators they don't start charging until you go past the 1800/2000 rev mark, once you hit that they will happily charge at low revs when your moving, I had the problem on my present boat, I rarely go above 1200RPM even when starting, went out all day and my battery's were nearly flat even though they were new battery's, when I checked things the previous owner instead of replacing the red ignition warning light had just connected them together under the dash making the circuit, I had one in my spares box and when I fitted it noticed that it didn't go out until I reved the engine to just above 1800RPM then it went out, I got my tester out to make sure, stopped the engine and the battery's showed 12.4v, started it as normal and it still showed 12.4v, Reved it to just over 1800RPM red light went out and it was charging at 14.4, so unless your alternator hits that cut in mark your battery's won't charge, once you hit it they will even charge on tickover, advice on that is always give your engine a little rev up when you start it, Another point that someone like Mark may or may not confirm is that the Red ignition light forms part of the charging circuit, if it's not working or the bulb has blown the battery's won't charge,,

It might be worth checking that it has a thermostat fitted! running at 50 degrees sounds like it hasn't, I think most engines with one run around 70 degrees, I had that problem one one of my boats where the water was barely warm, when I checked there was no thermostat, I fitted a new one and had piping hot water, as others said it could be an airlock but my first port of call would be check the thermostat

What they need is a big sign in hire boats and a clause in the contract, saying that any damage caused by the hirer going under bridges will have to payed for by the hirer, there's enough info telling them they must only use the pilots so no excuse in my book,,
