  1. Traditional clock repairers charge double a new one would be - bite the bullet and get a new one or do as Paul suggests. To be honest if its for use on the Broads, then Broadland tides work nothing like the tides out at sea so it will not be accurate so you might just as well use the tide tables on Shorebase and adjust accordingly using your local knowledge!! Well thats my view for what its worth!!!!!
  2. I don't believe there is any evidence that a boat has sunk because of osmosis! Many people have made a fortune saying the work is necessary but evidence that it will affect the structural integrity of GRP - unlikely! Don't forget they used to lay up hulls more thickly - I think the bottom of my Westerly was well over half an inch thick, probably nearer an inch in places!

I think the area they are talking about is at Caen Meadow - Little Switzerland is really a little further up and as Vaughan hints at, is an entirely different area and an extremely interesting area although my understanding of its primary use is as a fertiliser and a neutralising soil for acidic soils. Difficult to get to as it is very private - another BIG landlord keeping erks out, but i have been in several times over the years and has a unique high /low bridge and plenty of evidence it was a very major operation in its day. Probably worthy of a whole new thread!!

I have to say I tend to agree with Andy regarding those comments - these rivers and waterways belong to everyone, like it or not, and whilst they are used and enjoyed differently by differing people, we shall always see all types of people and behaviour. Personally I think that generally its still very much ok and a haven for those looking for peace and quiet - yes its there but would you really expect either Horstead Mill/Lock or Coltishall common to be quiet and peaceful on a hot and sunny day? I am afraid you expect too much! Get Vaughan to tell you what it was like in the early 70's when there were up to 3k hire boats on the system!!!!! I can think of places to fish which are quiet and peaceful and places to moor where no one will disturb me - I am afraid Popeye I can think of quite a few places with bankside access without the crowds but just as I will not tell you where these are, so its down to you to find them I am afraid! Not because I am being rude or objectionable, but no one told me, and its down to you to ferret them out from a map or wherever - ok ,I no longer fish but Horstead Mill would be amongst those places I would not even consider!!! Sorry!!!!!

Sadly I believe Chris B is correct - it never was a public footpath, merely a permitted one, and that permission was withdrawn by the Cators at the time the lease on the moorings was not renewed. There were plenty of signs then saying just that and that its now private. At the same time the angling club concerned - forget which one it is,- leased the fishing rights from that bank, or so I believe. I could of course be totally wrong! Don't you just love our local landowners!!!!!!!!
  6. Not if its Town Centric! Although to be fair its a long way from the centre. Alan - what sort of moorings had you in mind? The current one IMHO serves well - it does what it says on the can - you are never going to see one surrounded by bistros, restaurants and pleasant plazas ideal for an evening stroll, I am afraid! You have to remember its a long hard winter in Gt Yarmouth and the Town has few if any attractions in winter. There is virtually no river traffic and given the shorter daylight hours, few people would venture south which is why, I guess, the Yacht Station is not manned overwinter. Show that picture at Low Water in the middle of winter, and it may portray a differing view!!

  8. I would not call Clive a "small yard"!!!! He may not have a large hire fleet but he has a big yard and moorings for about 40 private boats, mostly large. I don't know what he plans are with his hire fleet but I expect he has plans for 10/15 or so. He has a big workshop with room for fabrication, and I guess room for some expansion. Whilst it does not make him "large" in comparison with the four main yards, I would say its a fair size and well within the "middle" range. And he is growing a good name whilst others have got too large and are losing the personal touch!
  9. Yes I think you are being a little unfair (not on the tank size!) simply because there are many variables. A 150l tank is fairly common on hire boats I have an old Perkins MC42 and over a year use approx 1 1/2 litres per hour or a little more but I have seen reports of people using astonishing amounts by my standard!! But then I always plan my voyages to spend at least 50% of the time travelling with the tide - yes even up and down the Ant and rarely exceed 1500rpm. That keeps me by my calculation around about the speed limit but does anyone do that? Punching a full flood tide south of Acle would probably double consumption, yet most people do it without thought. I don't go south anymore because I have been there, done it and read the book but especially down south punching the tide for any length of time would add to my consumption. We are coming up to neap tides this weekend, so that will help as will lack of rainfall will also reduce flow in some upper reaches. There really is no average given the variables - or thats my view! Today I cruised for 5 hours but I doubt I used much more than 8 litres but others would have got there quicker and used double - its a bit like a car! Depends how you drive them!!!!! How much thought you give to it, where you are cruising and whether you take note of tides and wait until the tide has turned, if thats the way you are going!!

Just thought you guys might like an update on the Wroxham roadworks which were clearly finished yesterday I guess, but the little man is still sitting in his van watching the lights changing, and not a workman in sight!! On the NCC site it says the roadworks are until tomorrow so I suppose we have to endure another day of this crass stupidity, driving slowly through the lights, looking at a filled in hole, which wasn't really big enough to warrant lights in the first place!! Why cannot the man just ring his boss and say the lights are no longer required and that they are just causing a hold up for the sake of it? Perhaps he was busy reading the Sun but he must have finished that by 9 - 9.30??? How much fuel and time was wasted today alone? Unbelievable!!
  11. I believe that they are especially lax in Norfolk - to be honest it would not matter if it were on a by road but it is on a major traffic artery with few alternatives.
  12. Wroxham again- far from getting better they continue over the weekend. Not that anyone will be working then. Supposedly up until the 4th - until they start again!!!! I do wonder whether the companies concerned are actually capable of sorting the problems out!!!

  14. Looking at potential infrastructure in advance is always fraught with problems - living in Kent as I did many years ago I remember the outcry about the Channel Tunnel. I wonder how we would be 30 yrs on if that had not been built? The M1 and the East Cost Mainline? Everywhere else in the world has high speed main lines, most faster than ours ever will be but then who am I to say? The trouble is you need vision to see ahead like that - Crossrail, now the Elizabeth Line first discussed many years before it got started in 2009. Who even now after a few weeks, says it is a waste of money - its already proving its worth. Verging on the political I guess, so I had better go away!!! Who am I to say whats good infrastructure, other than generally, we leave it too late in this country!!
  15. Take out the top 5% of wage earners, and that includes a lot of public sector too, and the "average" is know where near £39k. Indeed the ONS on their website show the average quoted pay in Grendels post above to be way off the mark - their website shows total pay per week in June as £604 and regular pay as £562 - the latter shows the average as being under £30K. Perhaps that puts a different complexion on the rail sector? And who is paying for the rail sector - my figure is probably a bit off the mark but I think we paid £12bn to keep that sector afloat during the pandemic. I know lots of less fortunate individuals who were laid off then and even those on furlough were not safe often being made redundant at the end of furlough. And don't even get me started on GP's who are just being asked to pay tax like everyone else on their pension pots - goodness knows how they will spend their retirement earnings. Most seem to want to retire at 50(!!), yet some people I know do not get their state pension until 67 and still have to work to make ends meet!
  16. The kids have been swimming from Caen Meadow, to my knowledge, for 65 years plus!! Nowt changes much, except we now worry about it. They used to swim out and hang onto your dinghy - that was when the extra long boathook we carried, came into its own!!! A few thwacks and they soon let go!!!
  17. Treat her to a trip on one of the tour boats - always loads of room on the Wroxham ones and loads of choices of times etc. and I am sure she would enjoy it - parking should be ok too.

    Perhaps ,as far as weed cutting is concerned, perhaps they should just pick up the phone and ask the BA??? The northern cutter is about to start on the Thurne again for the third time this year. The southern one is probably on the Waveney or at least thats my guess. That post ought to be moved to a new thread to leave this clear for this Breydon thread. Incidentally do they cut adjacent waterways or dykes - I suspect not?

    Sorry Meantime that boat is going the wrong way and the picture on the other side shows it almost dark - the sun still appears to be up and it wasn't - it was virtually dark as the other picture shows.

    And if you cross, when advised, at low water , its actually impossible to run aground where they did and the channel is very very obvious. Sunset is 21.17p.m. so good old fashioned lighting up time is 21.47 - a cloudy night would make it pretty dark most places on the Broads, except possibly Oulton!

    Correct! I just forgot what they called it! In the past I believe they have used them from dismantled groynes but having looked online, I was amazed at the price - lets only encourage them to do the necessary ones!!! Dread to think how long they are and the price of a full size one!!! If you look on "the other side" you will see it was the BA who had a hand in putting out the markers and signs! Or so they say!!

    Part of the issue is that I am not sure they are telegraph poles - I think they may be hard wood. Indeed they could even be OLD hardwood. Steel posts would probably help but lets not talk about moving them all - we do not need that adding to the nav bill! Perhaps they should be alternate so the posts are never that far apart!!
  23. The majority, have managed to negotiate that bridge without real issue for years - they do not need the BA to spend more money on unnecessary electronic solutions - you have that available for free in your brain and your eyes as is evidenced by that majority!
  24. So what makes you think that punters would take any notice of such signs? They don't stop lorries, people still travel around after dark when they are supposed to be tied up, and try and navigate Breydon after dark. Not that that makes much difference when you cannot spot a buoy even in broad daylight!!!
  25. Perhaps the need for caution is why the boards are as they are - if it was closer more people may be encouraged to try - unsuccessfully!!!
