  1. Thanks for the science chaps - now anyone used them or had any experience of them? Unlike Vaughan, I mistrust the use of the powder ones!!! If PBO and all the Classic Car mags seem to "endorse" them, I wonder why it took so long for people to hear of them in this part of the world?
  2. Miles Weston - says it all!!!!
  3. What impressed me was the length of time they fired for - 50 seconds is a long time or even 25 seconds with the shorter version is log enough if it works. I have always worried about the powder ones as to whether after a length of time, they still work. No - it won't be compliant with the BSS but I will comply anyway with the standard extinguishers!
  4. Ops in the wrong slot - meant to put it into Broads Chat!! Please please Mods can it be moved???
  5. Anyone have any experience or knowledge about these? https://firesafetystick.com/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=fire+safety+stick&adgrpid=78187154616&gclid=CjwKCAjwlZf3BRABEiwA8Q0qq8ho21pMHa9KgRXcSFYLC30tpcNHaRNAnqzFGUQ3s6HuCs3M6tjVPRoCpIEQAvD_BwE&hvadid=381563951686&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9045093&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=b&hvrand=15245342455148697091&hvtargid=kwd-775988933201&hydadcr=18510_1793628&tag=googhydr-21&ref=pd_sl_91x56fh21d_b Apparently there has been a lot of comment in some magazines such as PBO and indeed Classic Car magazines on their effectiveness. Having had a fire I realise how dangerous fires can be and if they are better than the dry powder variety, no cost is too high if safety is paramount. Any one used one? How good are they? I am sure it will take the BSC a few years to catch up but I have been thinking about carrying some in addition to the powder type. I am always wary of the powder type given the damage that the white powder can do, especially to an engine if running.
  6. Yes I agree about the lilies but lilies only grow in clean water so thats a good sign. Mostly we see the yellow ones on the bigger rivers but we are also beginning to see the white ones too in the upper reaches of rivers - and they like cleaner water still i believe! Stiil not had any issue with those up my filter - perhps they are too big!
  7. Tidal waters only? So on Barton ,you could stay? I don't think I would rely on that too much!!!! Having said that, if they knock me up at night, and I appear in my usual garb ( or not) who will have the biggest laugh????
  8. I really like those last two posts simply because it shows a degree of positivity instead of moaning about what might happen if...!!!! I am sorry for you prognosis but at least you are getting out and about and making the most of it - you are clearly not too scared to get into your van and get out either. OK - its not as you would wish but I applaud you for making the most of it, instead of constant negativity that some others allow to pervade their lives. How can you possibly increase your risk if you go out in your van, or indeed your car ( other than an accident! ), go somewhere pleasant and enjoy the day? You are hardly spreading the disease even if you open the car/ van door! Neither is it banned by Government decree either!! So its good to hear others making their own judgement even in these difficult times and just getting on with it. Good for you m8!!!!
  9. ECIPA - I was not suggesting that Ian does not do as he is told, and by and large I comply as you would expect. BUT I seen a marked change as we relax previous restrictions. Many still to seemingly still be glued to the daily briefing (not watched for over 2 months! ) and every spurious bit of news put out in the Press - I don't think I would believe a word, for example in the Daily Mail, but honestly the situation is not as dire as some would suggest, or the incidence would not be dropping rapidly and the vaccine testers having to pop over to Brazil! But right from the outset, I have been trying to judge the risks and to be honest have not, except once or twice, felt nervous about going food shopping or indeed doing so if I need to. I try not let these factors impact too harshly on what I do, and yes, I did moan about the restrictions but having made a judgement I did what I felt necessary. And will continue to do so and as a result, I find it is not as bad as some would have us believe! If I catch it, I will hope that , like the majority, it will have minimal effect but if I succumb more badly, the kids will inherit earlier - of whats left. I have generally had a good time and indeed still am but I will not be scared of it, just as I am not scared of dying in a car accident, scared of other diseases or of drowning if I fall overboard, or indeed any accident. It is what it is.
  10. I went right up to the lock the other day - no particular issues. Certainly no more weed growth than normal. I did check the filter out of habit but nothing special i.e not a lot really!!! However it is due for its first trim I believe!! However mussels might be a problem - chatting down the yard (at a distance of course! ) and the other day they took 5 barrow loads of zebras off a 27 footer!!!! Mind you, it had not been out for a long long time!!
  11. Ian - your posts continue to depress me! Like it or not, life continues and we cannot just stop the clock - whilst I am all to well aware that there are numbers still shielding, you still have to come into contact with someone with the disease to catch it, and to be honest, I think it that risk is not as high as you imagine. Of course you should take every precaution but the amount you worry, that alone is not doing you any good! I see the team testing the vaccine has had to upsticks and shift to Brazil - I will let you work out why! The large hospital in Norwich has just one case in ICU I suspect, and whilst the toll is very high, I read that over 60000 have had cancer treatment deferred - what of them? Of course lives matter, but you cannot lock yourself totally away for ever! You seem now to be pinning your hopes on a vaccine, and your place in the queue - even if it appears as early as you hope, vaccines rarely give 100% immunity so there will be a risk in that. Has no one had the flu this year - everyone has forgotten about that!! You must regain your ability to assess risk - however much you shield, risk will be ever present and not just from coronavirus so keep working on your individual risk assessment, you might begin to feel that this virus is not around every corner and under every stone! Well I don't and will carry on much as I do despite advancing years!!
  12. Why on earth should there be weed issues? I can see no evidence that weed growth has changed over lockdown? Do weeds read newspapers?
  13. Yep it does - I am off soon to a bubble in the North East - I look forward to it and have no concerns whatsoever!
  14. I suppose if you feel that your boat is better off locked away, then so be it! Yup - it was a fantastic day out with just sufficient breeze to take the heat away, as it is so often here. And to top it all, the light this evening was superb and I moored up at the end of a cracking day around 20.30 - a whole 4 hours later than some of my other brethren, and still oh so lovely. As you say, each to their own...!
  15. I also saw that the NNUH only had one Covid 19 patient, I assume that meant in an ICU. I am afraid I take a differing view from some of the posters and would recommend tourists to come here! You have all been sitting in front of the television watching every single detail for far too long and you all know you could so easily die of something else just as easily. We seem to have lost the ability to make a rational decision about the risk - instead you are all paralysed by the fear instilled into you by listening to the advice of too many so called experts! Bit like Boris really!!! Of course I am going to be shot down again in flames for making such a statement (twice in one day - a record for me!! ) But my view is that you have to take a view - you don't shut down the whole car industry because someone sadly dies on the roads, nor do you hide indoors! In fact you take not the blind bit of notice and just jump into your car! So come back as soon as you can and enjoy this beautiful county and bring with you loads of dosh to help the beleaguered hospitality industry, ashore and afloat - I certainly think the risks are now acceptably low and would welcome them!
  16. Never take a camera these days, simply because after so long, I never recognise a scene worth recording as "special" I know that that may sound strange to some of you and I accept how lucky I am, but it is so very normal - but I love it!!!
  17. I am just off Mr W, to enjoy doing b***er all on the river!!! ( Back around 8pm. - how I love the early evenings on the river! )
  18. OK - I will disappear and apologise! ( See - very short! )
  19. I read the other day, somewhere, and tell me by all means if I am wrong, that Broadsedge were still restricting their opening hours? If that is the case, and I apologise if I am wrong, and this could I hope ,lead to a very short thread, but why are the owners taking the view that it is up to them as a private company, to police the Government guidelines? I must admit if I was moored there, it would right royally hack me off, especially as I rarely get back to my own marina until around 8 in the evening this time of year. Please tell me I am wrong - if only to keep st least one thread short and devoid of squit?
  20. As far as I know its never been cut all over and you wouldn't expect it as no one goes all over it espcially into it deepest corners but the last time I went up their on a normal tide, I recall sailing over quite large sections outside the channel. But then it only drew around 2'6" - neither exclusion or neglect. BUT the weed does seem to have a mind of its own as to how much it grows! You will of course recall just how much trouble the GYP& HC had with the weed in Hickling but correct me if I am wrong, at its worst even they only did the channels!!! I believe that they appointed someone to study the issue - only for the weed to die off!!! 60 years later and it is still being dredged and used, and open to traffic!
  21. The BA haven't stopped cutting at all - the weedcutter has already been out and will continue to be out on its regular programme throughout the rest of the summer. However sadly like many things, its not the BA's decision but that of the EA who have the final say as to what is, or isn't cut and to what level it is actually cut. Generally however it is only the channel that is cut, and I would seriously doubt whether the channel is such you cannot get up or down it! The fact that there are few boats is I am sure, dictated by other factors - no one is hiring yet but with Martham doing day boats now, I guess we shall soon see a few more around. Fishing is also about to start and that should help numbers further. But you can guarantee that as soon as people can actually hire, it will start raining properly and water levels could drift back up!
  22. Whilst I agree with some of what has been said, I am afraid sitting indoors, and in front of computers, has caused a lot of you to seemingly lose the ability to assess risk in any kind of balanced way!!! Worst of all, there is poor old MM obsessing whether anyone has been fiddling with the batteries - you just could not make it up! I will leave you lot to continue to muse away and fantasise about the risk whilst I am out and about enjoying myself, selfishly of course! This weekend is going to bring more sun, and I shall enjoy it out in full. Incidentally, sorry to disappoint you Mr Nog, but I have been able to polish my boat this week so its not been that bad - a bit cooler but thats been fine! And equally whilst I agree with young Mr Waller about human waste, the councils must bear considerable responsibility - I am not sure even now as to whether all public conveniences are open? Just as they have in Broadland abrogated their responsibility for domestic boat waste, they are seemingly sitting around in meetings discussing whether to reopen urinals at all because of the splashing! Dear oh dear!!!
  23. It is really quite simple - either two singles living alone can form one bubble or one single living alone can form a bubble with one other family of as many as you like. Isn't that what it says? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51506729 And ECIPA remember there are 69m people in the UK and not all went on the marches. Any one seen an estimate of the total marching?
  24. Maybe - but I would not advise sex with some spiders! You know what they do with their mates......!!!!
  25. The problem is that they are trying to avoid opening up the whole rental market which they would have to do if they allowed two to stay over together - actually it is quite a good way of relaxing things very slightly without opening the flood gates - award Dominic a gold star for thinking that up!!!!!
