  1. Hello Carol, I am sure that members of not only the NBN but the other two main forums would be willing to hit a donation button if you place one on your excellent website. Regards Alan
  2. Hi Alan, I hope your launch goes better than a boat I worked on in the early 70's. I was on loan to install all of the electrics on a 40 foot trimaran, the boat had been worked on by a team of engineers for over a year, I was there just for the last few weeks. The boat was launched but took on water, it turned out the hulls that had been bought were porous (and then some). I never heard the end of the story on that boat. I am sure you fair far better. Best of luck. Regards Alan
  3. I am afraid that the dangers of electrical installation are not only limited to amateures many tradesmen can & do get it wrong. A friend of mine had a bathroom converted to a wetroom, the registered & approved electrician had a muppet moment and connected the bathroom lighting onto a 45 amp breaker and the shower onto a 6 amp breaker, the fault was only discovered when the shower kept tripping the wrong breaker. I had to replace a three phase 100 amp breaker in a board because it had burnt out on one of the phase connections where it went into the boards busbars, when fitted the connection had not been opened enough for the busbar to go into the connect, so when all three connections had been tightened on that phase the busbar was only touching the connection. People do not realise the dangers of low voltage especially DC. We have a number of ex GPO engineers on the forum who know of the dangers of having any tools (let alone spanners) anywhere near battery banks or even single batteries for that matter. Regards Alan
  4. Our crew on the canals can be heard on the way to the pub at night by the constant winding up of severeral torches. They are part of our Broads boating kit as well. After a few years the boating kit always takes up more room than the bags for our clothes. By the way don't forget the matches or a lighter and after seeing Robin a tin a good tin opener is a must, as is a wooden spoon and spatula. Regards Alan
  5. I agree with Iain regarding the tightness of the screw terminals and in my mind standard twin & earth should not be used, use 2.5mm2 3 core stranded cable for your ring main run. Regards Alan
  6. Hi Howard, Could you upload a better picture, I am having trouble spoting the urinals in that picture Regards Alan
  7. Hi Robin, You and your batteries, I am surprised that you do not carry spares just to keep all of your gear running It is a constant issue on most boats be they on the Broads or elsewhere even if you do not use an inverter we when hiring boats are advided to run for at least 5 hours a day every day. If you were just on the Northern Broads five hours a day every day for a week would mean covering a lot of the ground over and over again. We have all been moored next to someone on these all electrical appliance boats having to start the engine at "what time o'clock in the morning or evening" just to get a shower or to boil a kettle. Shore power for us every time when possible. Regards Alan
  8. Hi Steve, This is a typical shore power bulkhead inlet plug:- http://www.force4.co.uk/department/electrical/inverters-battery-chargers-shore-power/marinco-non-metallic-shore-power-inlet-16a.html You can however buy a similar bulkhead plug to the one in your picture on the same site for a quarter of the price but these like all the Broads power posts are only shower proof. Regards Alan
  9. Sadly these incidents do happen, I have heard rumours of boats being used as toilets. The other year I am sure you will remember the German family being woken in the night after being cast adrift at the Yarmouth Yacht Station. This action is not just limited to the Broads but also happens on the canals as well. With regards to the Broads if you are in doubt then drop your mud weight, we always tend to fasten off on board when ever possible. Regards Alan
  10. Hello Sue & Alistair, Welcome to the NBN Forum from Tan & myself. If you require any advice regarding routes, places to moor overnight please ask there is a wealth of knowledge from our forum members. Have a look at the information pages on the forum, the Richardson video's are worth a look. Regards Alan
  11. Hi Eric, Don't they just keep banging on until it eventually fits Regards Alan
  12. I tend to agree with the above comments regarding the time spent on the water, but at least it was a program that was of interest and a welcomed change from soaps or reality TV. Saltaire is well worth a visit, we were moored almost in the same spot on the canal between the old mills buildings. I was surprised that the program did not include passage through the Bingley 3 & 5 rise locks or Skipton and the top pound above Gargrave with the canal almost coming back on itself, snaking its way across the dales. One of the things I was unaware of was the arcade in Leeds, even though I worked in Leeds in the mid 70's, any leisure time was spent walking on the canal or rummaging around the electronic shops that used to be near the station arches. I will record the rest of the programmes, into Wales next week so don't look down from the Chirk & Pontcysyllte Aqueducts. http://www.pontcysyllte-aqueduct.co.uk/en-gb/top-ideas/pontcysyllte-aqueduct/ Regards Alan
  13. At 8.00pm on ITV (channel 3) Barging About Britain introduced by John Sergeant visits the Leeds & Liverpool Canal this evening. http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2015-02-13/barging-round-britain-john-sergeant-on-the-secrets-of-our-waterways Signing off to watch the program Regards Alan
  14. Hi Bob, This hoax was a waste of everyone's time including the Humber Coastguard who coordinated the search, a RAF Rescue helicopter, the Cromer Life Boat and several vessels that were in the area including a gas rig support vessel and a ferry. These idiots if found should be taken to task for their stupidity, these emergency services can not be everywhere and a real emergency could have developed at the time of this search. Regards Alan
  15. Hi Monica, Deleted as requested. Regards Alan
  16. After extensive searching by a number of vessels and a Sea King helecopter the search was called off earlier this morning and has been deemed as an hoax. Regards Alan
  17. Hi Alan, I would go for 4 lines at 14mm, the blue warps always look well against the white hull. I would make two of the lines with a 10 metre minimum or maybe 12 metres and two shorter. When mooring up I tend to lay out the forward warps back to our side ladders; so I can get down the ladders while Tan goes down onto the bathing platform for the stern warps. If you specify the length's of the lines at the chandlers most will make off the ends for you at a few pounds per end. I know you like to do most things yourself, so you may be better buying a fid and check out some instructions on splicing. Regards Alan
  18. Hello Simon, Thank you for posting this available wetshed mooring I am sure you will be fending off enquires regarding regarding these rare sort after moorings. Regards Alan
  19. Hello Spider. Here is a link to our listing of Marine Surveyors. http://www.thenorfolkbroads.net/forum/forum/196-marine-surveyors/ Regards Alan
  20. Great Film, plenty of humour for a war film, wheeling & dealing with gold bars, 60 foot of bridge no problem ; Oddball recons he can get anywhere! Regards Alan
  21. Hi Iain, Oddball's pink paint would fit in nicely with Alan's pink fenders, mind you he may be resting drinking some wine and eating some cheese. Regards Alan
  22. Hi Alan, Good luck with the BSS inspection. Regards Alan
  23. Our last time on the Broads we used a Tom Tom it gave the speed ok but kept telling us to turn left or right to get onto a road Regards Alan
  24. Hi Griff, If you have been used to Fein tools you might be better going for Makita, I still have one of their very early jigsaws that I have been using for well over 40 years and my plane is far better than the Bosch that I still have but rarely use. I have a Fein biscuit joiner and I find that a very good tool. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00AEASPOY/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=569136327&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B008JD60B8&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0ZCNPKASRH4ZNWEQX4CE The above is the 110 volt version which I assume you would prefer to use on site. Regards Alan
  25. Hi Iain The Eric Morecambe quote came about during the Andre Previn (Mr Preview) sketch where Eric was "playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Classic sketch in the Morecambe & Wise hall of fame, sadly we will never see the likes of them again. Regards Alan
