  2. Richard reported a couple of weeks ago that he was having problems with the software and that he is also unwell but hoped to get it up again in the near future.
  3. I have spent the day onboard doing odd jobs and finding an additional mooring for the new boat. My moorings have been split across the marina, about as far apart as they could be. I have claimed the one next to Denham Owl as it is only about 50' from Whitey. Now all I need is Horning to dry out so the boat can be transported down. I now need to practice stern on mooring, it's been 15 years since I did one 🤞
  4. Good morning all, Please be aware that a large tree has fallen and is extending 10m into the channel of the River Yare about 800m upstream of the Water’s Edge pub (true right bank). The tree is currently marked with 2 yellow buoys. Navigators are advised to exercise caution when navigating in the area. Work to remove the tree will begin next week. Thank you for your cooperation. 6. You might need a refresher driving lesson it's been so long.
  7. It does beggar belief that they budget for inflation on the previous year rather than on the forecast rate. One more way of keeping the empire growing. They are not alone, my mooring fees will go up by 9% in March when inflation should be around 3.5 %. So much for sustainable increases.
  8. I think the last few lines of this poem by Bill Mitton are particularly sad. The Crosses I stood there before the crosses glowing white in row on row Everyone a young life cut short as the names upon them show. The dates they died below the names tell of wars now past and gone Passchendaele, the Somme, and Mons of battles fought, and lost or won. History remembers, as it should these men who fought and died Whilst for their families left behind a dull sorrow tinged with pride. The faces of boys held now in Sepia who died in days long gone yet living on in memories and hearts, still holding on. Yet despite the hurt and grief here what with horror makes me fill Is that when I look behind me there are more new crosses growing still.
  9. Talking to my youngest granddaughter Annie on the way home from school tonight she was telling me about a poem they read out during a Remembrance assembly today, she could recite the first few lines and said it was a lovely but sad poem, I recited my favourite war poem, The Life That I Have, this is now her other favourite poem. At my grandsons school the vast majority of pupils were wearing poppies on their blazers. Anyone in a cadet unit could wear their uniforms for the day. I saw a good number of Air force, Army, Navy and Royal Marine uniforms, all being proudly worn. How good to know the next generation are being shown the importance of Remembrance. In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. By John McCrae The Life That I Have The life that I have Is all that I have And the life that I have Is yours The love that I have Of the life that I have Is yours and yours and yours. A sleep I shall have A rest I shall have Yet death will be but a pause For the peace of my years In the long green grass Will be yours and yours and yours. by Leo Marks
  10. Have you tried the sky view app, it is useful to identify bright lights in the sky.
  11. Boating News - Breydon and Haven Bridges both operational Peel Ports have advised the Authority that Breydon Bridge and Haven Bridge are now fully operational. Vessels will be grouped together on lifts whenever possible. When craft are to transit the bridge in opposite directions, those vessels going ‘with the tide’ will be given priority. Lifts for weekends should be booked by 16:00 on Friday or on the previous working day in the case of Public Holidays. For information on how to book passage please visit: https://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/boating/navigating-the-broads/boating-news/haven-and-breydon-bridges-back-in-operation

  14. The same engine as in my 1988 Sheerline 740, mine is on hydraulic drive and shows 3700 hours. Seems to go okay, but it was around Horning. It is going to be used on the Southern areas so I will have to see how it goes although I am not to worried about speed.
  15. Here I am 😁 As the waste pipe is open it would take a prolonged and deep freeze to ice up and if it did it wouldn't damage a S trap but theoretically could cause damage to a P trap. I have never seen one frozen up either on a boat or in a domestic setting. If you are worried just pour some salt down the hole and a splash of water to mix it. Much nicer than antifreeze. The waste would be the easy one to thaw, bit of hot water dribbled down it would work.
  16. Good afternoon all, As you have likely seen from the news, Storm Ciarán is forecast to hit the Broads area on Thursday 02 November 2023. Met Office weather warnings of wet and windy weather are currently issued for the East of England, with potential gusts of up to 60 mph. We are advising boaters not to navigate during the storm where possible, and that fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life. Please ensure boats and covers are secure, and to be aware that high water levels will continue to make navigation difficult in some areas, especially under low bridges. Some moorings may also become flooded. For boaters who are on the rivers during high winds, please be mindful of where you moor up, avoiding areas with lots of trees and other potentially-unstable structures. When mooring, make sure to adjust your ropes, be aware of the effect that wind has on your steering and be extra careful getting off and on the boat. Broads Authority Rangers have increased the number of safety checks around the Broads before the storm and will be undertaking additional checks afterward, particularly looking for any trees that might be down in the navigation or any other obstructions. Check tide times and flood warnings before you travel: https://check-for-flooding.service.gov.uk/alerts-and-warnings To report fallen trees and obstructions please contact Broads Control which operates daily between 9am – 5pm (on 01603 756056 or email Broads.Control@broads-authority.gov.uk) and call 999 during an emergency. https://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/boating/navigating-the-broads/boating-news/safety-warning-due-to-storm-ciaran Best, Tom Tom Waterfall
  17. I did the survey myself, first time I have had to abandon the car and get a boat to do a survey. Ferry Lane was in full flood. I thought it had been well maintained and certainly well built. The best clue was the sliding canopy was square with equal spacing, unlike two previous boats we had viewed. It has had money spent wisely on it in the last four years. The accommodation will suit growing grandchildren, 14 year old grandson is now 6' 3"
  18. It has the badge on the dash. I have just realised, I will have three boats to clean in the spring before it goes. 😬 At least a sneaky visit over winter to check they are ok will be more justified, well it will be in my mind, I just need to convince Matron.
  19. I would think that scenario would depend on hire costs not rising above the level of increasing ownership costs. The biggest cost of owning a boat has got to be home mooring fees, a 10% increase on these overshadows 10% on tolls.
  20. They are not what you would call fast, 😁
  21. Having spent 10 days onboard I seem to have acquired another boat. Having looked at a few over priced rough boats I found a Sheerline 740, sliding canopy. 1988 model. It has everything on my wish list except being one foot longer. It has a bilge keel apparently, it does feel very stable. It is going into Boulter's for some minor works I found doing the inspection and should be ready mid November. Late October appears to be a good time to find the early bargains, or at least realistic sellers. Late October is a rubbish time to sell a Shetland family four so rather than it looking stale on a brokage site over winter I will keep hold of it until the Spring and then sell it, hopefully.
  22. Given that the rate of inflation is generally expected to fall to around 5% by march 2024, it is wrong to base next year's budget figures on last years figures. In the real world, replacement of equipment is delayed if a company can't afford it, shiny new toys are on a wish list, the existing equipment has to last longer and have a bit more maintenance than expected, unless you have a captive cash cow to squeeze dry.
  23. Hi everyone, The fog has lifted and Breydon has now re-opened to hire craft. There may still be areas of localised fog/mist in the Broads so please be cautious. Wishing you a good afternoon and weekend when you get there, Kind regards Tom
  24. Good morning, Breydon Water is currently closed to hire craft due to the extremely foggy conditions. We'll issue an update later on when it clears. Visibility is poor in many areas of the Broads so please be careful this morning if you're on or near the water.
