I see on the EDP website that the old Oasis leisure centre in Thorpe has just joined the Griffin pub, Langley Junior school (Beech Hill) and Pinebanks by being burned down in the night after spending a good while empty in the hands of potential developers.

I hope someone managed to rescue all the newts that have previously prevented any change of use or building permission on the site.

We had a very similar situation here along southend seafront. The one that sticks out is the old esplanade pub. They had several attempts at burning that down, they got it in the end lol..

The old Pontins site at Hemsby was very unlucky with several outbreaks of fire before planning permission was given for housing.

I once worked for an organisation that was on a large site with various different buildings.  Dilapidated buildings tended to mysteriously catch fire in the night.  4 times it happened, 3 of those times were to the same building in a period of about 70 years.  Just prior to 2010 it had again been rebuilt at insurers expense into practically a new facility.
