Chelsea14Ian
We have had the boat recommissioned, and will be on the boat the weekend after next.We want to have the tank sterilized .Any advice welcome. Thanks Ian
MauriceMynah
To be honest I don't think the tank will really need sterilizing. Most diesel engines are very forgiving and the fuel filter will normally take out anything nasty. If it's an inboard petrol engine, the same applies though it's best to have in as much fresh fuel in the tank as you can. For outboards, just put any of last years petrol in your car and fill afresh. If I can be of any further assistance I'd be ruddy amazed.
JawsOrca
I think he means the water tank. Dad try this: http://www.aquatabs.com/marine-airline-safe-drinking-water/water-disinfectant-tablets.html Brian wards probably do similar. Personally though I wouldn't bother as the hoses are never sterile so you can never 100% say that water in the tank is safe to drink. Thanks Ian Hi Ian,I wouldn't bother you will never get the taste of the sterilizing solution out of the water, it makes for lousy tea and coffee and ruins a good malt I am told.If you use bottled water for drinks and brushing teeth then go for it.RegardsAlan

BuffaloBill
Ian, Could I suggest what I do at the start of each season? Put water in the tank to about 1/4 full and then switch a tap/taps on until its empty again to flush the tank. Do this twice and then put those aquatabs tabs in and fill to 1/2 full. Use until empty then use as normal. What Iv'e fitted on each of the boats we've owned is an Aqua Filter which is basically a carbon filter which removes almost everything from the water and leaves it tasting as water should! See the attached how I did it. By fitting the tap before the pump, you can change the filter, pump or whatever without having to empty the tank each time. If the hose hasn't been used for some time, let it run for a while to help clean any algea etc. from the hose. We do have our own though to ensure a clean fill-up. Hope this is helpful. Edited to add that I did this 2 weeks ago and I change the filter at the start of each season.
Matt
Bill, is the filter directly after the pump so is used for all taps? We have one of the filters in thunder but it only serves one tap. We use all the taps as we would at home. Been okay so far.....
ranworthbreeze
Most boats have a filter fitted in their water system basically to protect the water pump impeller from damage from foreign bodies from the water supply. I can see the point of having another filter, carbon or chalk bases filter. Regards Alan
BuffaloBill
Matt. As you will see from the photo, there is the tap directly from the tank pipe to the pump and then to the filter. The exit from the filter then continues back into the pipe that used to exit from the pump to the systems. This way, everything using water from the tank goes through the filter first including the shower. Doing it this way means we can drink water direct from the boat freshwater tank without the any risk of contaminated water. EG. Washing your teeth or drinking squash for instance. We've never had any problems whatsoever since I adopted this way of doing it. I might add that the filter must be after the pump so that water is forced through it.
Matt
So you can drink whilst your in the shower? I like your style ;-) All looks neat and tidy as I would expect given the size of your toolbox

Aye I just avoided the extra year, but in truth had already retired through ill health. I also get discounted train fare to Glasgow with my pass. Iain.
