  1. Thanks Lorraine. Will be in touch either at the pub or in Stalham. Bill.
  2. Why was'nt the story finished? Just had to put some dry undercrackers on! :
  3. Thanks John. Mark, right on the button!
  4. I know what your trying to get across Martin. Slack Water at YS is supposed to be just that but whenever i went through, the river was still running out of the Bure at that time whilst the tide is starting to flood into Breydon. Anyway, what I was trying to get across was that I prefer the way I do it for the reasons given, Other people may not agree but 'punching the tide' for a short stretch gives benefits with the tide later.
  5. I'm with John on this. 30mins after slack water in both directions is what I aim for. John explained the going up the Bure direction so here's my take on the going down the Bure one! Having had someone pull out and turn downstream from the YS right in front of me(and i DO MEAN RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!) 5yrs ago which gave me real handling problems as we were going with the tide, which does tend to get a move on there..., I had full astern with the resulting smokeing exhaust and no steerage and how we never hit them I'll never know. It must only have been literally inches! From my helm position I was convinced we were going to hit! Their helmsman never even looked at us once and appeared to have never seen us at all. We were going only slightly faster than the ebb tide to give me steerage and this was at slack water time. Most regular boaters know the Bure continues to run out for maybe 30mins or so after slack water which had never bothered me before but now after that incident, I always arrive at least 30mins after slack water!! Bill. Edited to add:- You also get the benefit of a good push through Breydon having a good tide with you!
  6. Hey up Chip. We need 6' 10" for our boat and went into Thorpe for the first time with her this year. Hadn't been there since the 60's so was keen to get through the bridges and did it at half tide with 2" to spare! People in the Rushcutters breathed a sigh of relief as did Jenny!! Just keep in mind that you may have a long wait until the tide allows you back out though if you don't go straight through as we did. Next time we intend to stop for the night. Loverly place. Just keep your eye on the bridge height gauges
  7. What absolute dross. You people ought to get out more.
  8. Being within a few minutes of our moorings, can anyone enlighten me as to why she caught fire? I would be gutted (No pun intended!)if ours did so can only sympathise with the owner. We are down from Saturday morning till Wednesday and going by there so will keep eyes wide open!
  9. Come on then! Give Give May pay to go down that route for us.
  10. Nice photo's Paul. I would like mine in a satin finish black to reduce the glare as mentioned. (I already wear a hat when in the sun so as not to blind Jenny.... ) The biggest obsticle really is the engraving. Jenny says do it with Dymo tape. No NO NOO! Is there a kit available to DIY that sort of thing or is there another way. Paul's is worth noting though!
  11. Correct. On the right is now a row of very expensive houses in the trees and a marina below them, where the boats are moored on the riverfront. It all belongs to Barnes now and can be viewed from their webcam. I couldn't believe it had changed that much!!
  12. Many of those old photo's brought back memories for me, so much so, I went and found my old honeymoon ones from May 1985. Anyone recognise this place now? (ps. now divorced from her!!)
  13. This is the dash now. The whole of the flat white part needs covering to give a more pleasing finish. An odd shape but it's worth doing well if I'm going to do it!!
  14. for that. Jenny says it has to look good or else! Would like to see Grants dash and if it's good, how did he do it! Yes I'm pretty handy at most things
  15. Ok peeps, I need to update my dash as I'll be adding speed and depth logs, + over the years there have been additions and replacements to switches and gauges which now look untidy! I know Brian Ward does them to order but the question is, does anyone else do it too? The reason I ask is that the quote they gave me I felt was somewhat over the top. Any ideas?
  16. My boat is absolutely fithy... gets like it every week it does.... Where can I book them..
  17. Dear oh dear, my boats absolutely filthy.. gets filthy every week it does..... Where can I book 'em?
  18. Hi Bill. Regarding that little inlet... when we left Gelderston the following day after meeting you, we passed that inlet and a Shetland 4+2 was just going in to moor. Can't remember the state of the tide though.
  19. If I was anything to do with HMC&E, I'd tell them where to go and put their Directive Time we had that referendum on pulling out of the EU. Bags me first in the queue

    Arrival Day?

Also if you do fry-ups, bring your own frying pan as the ones on all the hire boats we had were useless as everything stuck! Also bring a torch if you feel you may be late getting back to the boat at night (Saves a late night dip in the river...). As you will be arriving late-ish in the day, it may be a good idea to bring some milk in case the shops have run out,(it will be a busy period!) and you may need some matches to light the cooker. . Bill.
  21. Hi Will. Not to put a downer on your choice of boat, but, Don't forget to bring a brolly with you as the Breakaway's don't have a wiper! Friends of ours hired one last year and they had to lower the centre section of the screen to see where they were going during heavy rain. Apart from that, they enjoyed the boat but will hire a larger one next time as it's a bit on the small side even for 2. . Bill
  22. Water Gypsy A304 is sitting on hard standing next to our boat after sinking in the cold spell after Christmas. She is being repaired albeit slowly, and may take several months to complete as there are lots of rotten segments below the water line which the frost may have blown. At least she is on her way back and will look good when she's painted again.
