  1. There are day boats for hire at Geldeston, Beccles, Oulton Broad, St Olaves and Burgh St Peter. If the swim has 200 entrants then I guess that a minimum of ten rescue boats will be required and I suspect that these will largely be hired dayboats. That still leaves quite a few available for the more usual, casual hirers.

I often wonder if I was the last burbot catcher in England? I was fishing the Waveney with my father back in the 50's. He'd caught burbot with his father. Only time I ever saw one, what caused their demise I don't know, I would have returned it.

Thanks, TC, maybe I'd best head for Horning! We have them on my local Broad, seemingly all my angling friends have caught one, just not me. Still, I did once catch a burbot, more than 60 years ago! As for those large rats, the fur was nutria, the rats themselves were copu.

In over sixty five years fishing the Broads I have never caught a tench let alone one of 5 pounds, I'm envious of that one!
  6. There was also very little wind to blow fumes and gas build-ups away.
  7. Oh for the worry free days of Bucket & Chucket!
  8. Sixty years cruising the Broads, no mean feat is that. Gosh, you must have seen some changes in that time, some good and some not so good. In that time the biggest improvement that I can think of is waterproof decks, those of you who haven't woken up in soaked bed cloths don't know what you are missing! The loss of the deposit scheme removing any financial responsibility from the hirer is probably the biggest negative in that time.
  9. I don't suppose George will read this but just in case he does I wish his new sprog well.
  10. Had they been arrested for not displaying their registration numbers on their transoms?
  11. George is still at Ludham Bridge & I know people who speak very highly of him.
  12. How right you are! https://www.moonfleetmarine.co.uk/#services I'm sure that Richardsons could pick her up for you.

Right, TC, so what will you be fishing for come the 16th? It'll be roach & pike for me although I expect the odd bream might muscle in, maybe even a nuisance carp, we get a few on the Southern Broads.

  16. Good to hear. My experiences with Martham are similar to your's, brillient people to do business with.

I often wear a red jumper and a bobble cap and wave at people! By the way, welcome TopCat! Good to have another angler onboard. No I didn't, Top Cat did! Anyway, here I am in my red jumper, must have been a hot day, didn't have my hat on!
  19. Having looked at their facebook page, with a degree of surprise, I shall reserve judgement until I'm up that way! One positive, it can't possibly be less attractive than it was, can it?
  20. We do get lots of happy soles on the Broads but regretfully we also meet a few miserable old trouts, generally from down South!
  21. I hardly think that there is a run up to Loddon though!
  22. I caught my personal best parr during the freshwater open season, identified from a photo by an environment agency officer who told me that there is a spring run of sea trout on the Yare. My brother caught a few, I never have but then I have never been after them. One of the fishing guides, Charlie Bettell, always maintained it was worth fly fishing for sea-trout in the spring.
  23. I kid you not, I once caught a salmon parr at Loddon!
