  1. The stick to the right rule appears to preclude common sense! But lets be honest, the first time hirer in a day-boat is probably either scared stiff or oblivious to the problems, just sticking to the rules exactly as told to them. I have been working both the wind and the tide and been heading along what would be my left side when an approaching day-boat, on his right side, has squeezed between me and the reeds, actually pushing against the reeds, not only that but actually passing under my boom. On another occasion, in the Three Rivers Race, a dayboat actually overtook us on our right side, and we were well over to the right anyway. He too pushed against the reeds and passed under our boom, which itself was just touching the reeds! In both cases had I not sheeted in sharpish then my sheets would probably have snagged on their cabin roofs. Does seem to be a dayboat rather than a hire cruiser thing. I suspect that the bloke handing over the dayboat has given the minimum advice possible, e.g. stick to the right and you'll be alright.
  2. They have, IN PART, the status of a National Park! In truth it is that minor indiscretion, detour from the full truth, that dissuaded me from pressing the buy button and asking if anyone here had read it. However, that Poppy suggests that it is a 'light read' means that it is probably a tad high brow for myself but I respect Poppy's opinion and both trust and appreciate his recommendation.
  3. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Norfolk-Broads-Biography-Pete-Goodrum/dp/1445613190 Anyone read it all?
  4. Berney Arms on the Acle Straight? River on one side, A47 on the other, sorted.
  5. Well, here's the basic reality, apparently the idea is that the Authority wanted to speak to 600 private toll payers, broken down by segments to reflect the tolls structure. So there was a need to speak to some youngsters, some relics, some sailors, some gin palace owners, etc, etc. in proportions that reflect the proportions found on the tolls database. The Authority was advised that a sample of that size would be sufficiently representative. Hopefully Authority officers have had no input into what questions have been asked and that previous criticisms that leading questions are asked have been noted!
  6. There was a time! Charts, compasses and leadline, they were the days! Sentimental old fool that I am!
  7. John, apparently the opinions of those of us over 54 don't matter thus the suggestion that those of us of that age plus will no longer have a place on the Broads.
  8. Even closed to private boats with radar and chart plotters? Not that I would wish to attempt it despite having the ability & equipment to be able to navigate at sea.
  9. The age limit, have referred the matter to the NSBA.
  10. That makes two of us. Re the 54 year old age limit, age discrimination, objectionable. Worth pursuing.
  11. The area known as Carlton Ham, a 'ham' being a bay. Lovely picture.
  12. Now't wrong with dropping in to see Jon at Wayford Bridge, not so old rum character, tells it as it is, go along and judge for yourself. Couldn't help me when I wanted an outboard but it was a pleasure meeting the legend!
  13. Jan, you aren't wasting your time but I do think that you are worrying unnecessarily. It is a fact of life that the selling of boats, especially lower priced ones, is seasonal and it's quite likely that your boat won't shift until after Christmas, even March. As a matter of interest when did you buy her? Taking her in as a part exchange might be an option worth exploring. Personally I would go back to Herbert Woods & Waterside and talk part-exchanges, after all they sell boats and subsequently their moorings.
  14. I was talking to a rep at one of the big agencies, said he wouldn't bother getting out of bed for anything less than £100,000.00! Re E-Bay my daughter sold her Delta speedboat there and ended up richer than she expected so I wouldn't dismiss that route.
  15. Matt, I think that that is good advice. I see that NBS has two other Alpha 26s for sale so a move might be sensible.
  16. Hi Janice, I have replied on the other thread too. Since then I have looked at the brokers website: http://www.norfolkboatsales.co.uk/used-boats/alpha-26-lady-lindar-191.asp Lovely boat, in my opinion, lots of us older folk, apparently, are downsizing to more manageable boats so good luck!
  17. Janice, at this time of the year the brokers will be awash with boats for sale. I rather fear that it's probable that bigger, more prestigious, more profitable boats will be featured in the main selling area. Don't take that as gospel but those guys are in the business of making money, been at it for a long time, know what they are doing. In any case I doubt that she'll sell before the New Year, maybe as late as Easter, so cleaning it now will mean that she'll need cleaning later. The alternative is to sell her yourself. Unfortunately there are scores of small cruisers up for sale this winter. I'm afraid selling a boat is not as easy as buying one! When the time is right I'm sure she'll be cleaned, bit pointless at this time of the year, in my opinion. Anyway, good luck.
  18. DF, on an Olympus a 50mm lens is the equivalent of a 75mm in 'old' 35mm terms. My everyday outfit is a 25mm 'pancake' & the 50mm, although I do have zooms my two prime lenses get used 95% of the time.
  19. Was in Norwich today, hardly an award winning picture but it is autumn. I walked the Wensum Way, very pleasant and interesting walk, just need more rewarding lighting, next time. A worth the effort walk, recommended, in my opinion.
  20. Judging by your avatar, David, I hope that you do, so we can then see your pictures!
  21. Should be good for a genuine counterfeit camera then!
  22. I don't know who took this one, it's an anonymous picture hanging in Lowestoft's maritime museum. I just like the atmosphere of it
  23. A few minutes later: Quo Vadis, Olympus E420 with a Zuiko 50mm f1.2 lens for these last two pictures.
  24. The view from my 'office'! (garden shed). Great time of the year for sunsets & tonight's was excellent.
