  1. It is all relative. We lived in South Buckinghamshire before retirement so found Norfolk very cheap indeed especially as we did not need a large house like we had. As someone pointed out in another place unaffordability is a product of poor education, qualifications, and low income not property's value that only reflects demand. I put the money I released into closely monitored investments so the cash is there should we decide on a change to another really expensive area again.
  2. Once again this region is well represented in the nominations: Restoration of the year: Hathor Spirit of Tradition under 40ft: Kite & Rebel Reiver Spirit of Tradition: Spirit 46 Power under 40ft: Lucy Lavers Power over 40ft: Spirit P40 Not bad going!
  3. Over there, in the other place is a discussion regarding full residential status for ten moorings at the WRC. Somewhere or other I am sure I read about the Government wanting more homes afloat. Could this be the start of a change of heart by the BA or could someone else pulling their strings? Don't you just love a conspiracy theory!
  4. It is to stop the good produce of Speyside reaching England. They are going to give us that rough old stuff from Jura, Islay and Skye.
  5. 6. Browns results for today have been published and this propert is listed at £240,000.
  7. Ice breaking is not a good idea in areas of leisure boating. Proper ice breakers as used for shipping partially ride up on the ice to break it. Using a mud wherry would ram the ice into moored vessels damaging gel coat and scoring planks on wooden ones. Furthermore it would refreeze in no time at all. I have had a few moments with ice in Stalham Dyke and just don't risk it any more.
  8. Love the post from Bitternboy. The RAC did the same on major roads. And what about the radio SOS messages before mobile phones that went something like: "This is an SOS for Mr & Mrs Smith" Pause " Would Mr & Mrs Peter Smith touring Scotland in a green Morris Minor registration 123 XYX Please phone home. It is about Mrs Smith's mother who is dangerously ill" I think they were broadcast three times s day before the main news and after the weather forecast. Anyway essential listening if touring.
  9. I actually think most boaters be they hirers or owners prefer to navigate "The Old Way" using the tide table and height boards. Many actually like to escape technology. The ability to make a phone call everwhere is however highly desirable.
  10. Helmless boats would be good like the Google Car. Might not get hit as much and the punters can concentrate on their game box and watching soaps.
  11. Vodaphone actually is not bad in Blakeney as they have boosters under their "sure rural scheme" I think it is only 3G though. I also think that the second home owner bit can be a little overstated as there are very few of them with either the time or inclination to be on the parish council of their village. Now Incomers (of which I admit I am one) can be a different kettle of piscatorial all together.
  12. Full 4G now at Broadsedge on Vodafone. That has only happened recently. Still a complete black hole up here on the coast though.
  13. I have bought it and will try to make an enlargement for my den. Thanks Strowager.
  14. Missed it, zI will try i player
  15. That was on about three weeks ago, repeats get closer and closer.
  16. Escargot these days are farmed commercially. Even in rural France the gathering in the wild has virtually died out. The reason is the land snail (and the slug) are carriers of Liver Fluke, one of the less welcome parasites.
  17. They went because the catering trade bought in bulk. They don't appear to limit the quantity per customer on specials like some supermarkets.
  18. I looked for some in Cromer and North Walsham without luck. A few weeks ago their Escargot lasted no more than a few hours! But one thing I have noticed whenever they have a "When it's gone it's gone" is that certain well known eating troughs in North Norfolk will have the same fare on their menus four to six weeks later. A few weeks ago I was in Tesco Stalham I knew where the gentleman in front was from, the trolley contained the cheapest butter, eggs and various ingredients that Tesco sell! Their menu does make much of local ingredients. I suppose Tesco is local.
  19. If I had that money I would have a new J class built in Holland and campaign it worldwide. It would actually probably cost more as you need a large motor yacht to act as base for all the crew and the airfares and hotels for the team as the boats move from venue to venue add up. Seriously I would have a new wooden cruiser built to my spec that the two of us can handle. Something like a Bates Starcraft. (can no longer sail with comfort) and split the ten million twix RNLI, McMillan , M Curie, and Cancer Research.
  20. I look at the Norfolk Web Cams every morning inc. Blakeney, Wells and Horning whilst having my first cup of tea. I would love to view one at LudhamBridge. Up and down river would be great.
  21. Earls Court was a holiday every year after Christmas. I used to love looking down on the pool from the first floor but it was not only the boat show, you had: Harrods sale plus all the other Department Stores doing the same. The West End shows. The choice of dozens of hotels to cater for all budgets and the same for restaurants. It really was a short break for all the family and that is why Excel has struggled. Also like it or not there is vast personal wealth to the West of London who have easy access to the West End and Southampton and are not going to fight their way to the East End.
  22. We watched last night. One of the best hour of tv for a long time.
  23. Everyone with the interest of Broads boating at heart needs to be a member. Boat ownership is not obligatory. The Green Book alone is worth the small cost of membership.
  24. When I was young and foolish Churchmans No1 or Senior Service were my choice with a glass of Glenmorangie.
