  1. We've got the same postcard in our collection. It is used and the cancellation is September 1959 - so earlier that 1960's.
  2. When Grebe was being built in April 1999 we applied for a BA registration and we were allocated 16E. When we arrived in Broadland we spotted two new Belaugh Boats that were 2E and 3E?. In general they run a number series with a following letter until 999 is reached, then start again.
  3. R Derwent in Derbyshire forms the resevoirs, Derwent, Howden and Ladybower, where the dambusters practiced and where they flew the tributes recently. it runs thorugh Chatsworth, Matlock, Matlock Bath, Belper and Derby before joining the R Trent at Shardlow. The Yorkshire Derwent drains the North Yorks moors and runs through Malton, Stamford Bridge and lots of villages before joining the R Ouse at Barmby. It used to be navigable to Norton and beyond but the upper reaches weres closed a long time. An attempt was madein the 1980s to force the land owners to allow navigation but the locals and the Yorkshire Derwent Trust finally lost in the appeal court. Navigation remains to Stamford Bridge although Elvington/Sutton-on-Derwent Lock is currently out of action on safety reasons. The river also offers access to the Pocklington Canal. The Derwent has no navigation authority but EA will inspect that the boat is non-poLluting and issue a Permission to Navigate certificate. The Derwnt is the source of much of S Yorkshire's drinking water. There are large extraction works on the banks.
  4. Is that a Christmas picture JA? "Chestnuts Roasting by an Open Fire!!"
  5. There was a fire in the roof area of a Boeing 787 at Heathrow last year. It was parked up, switched off and not connected to shore-power. The cause was from the Li-on battery in the locater package in the saloon roof. Root cause was a wiring and assembly fault on the battery pack.
  6. Norfolk Broads Yacht Club on Wroxham Broad are holding their Fireworks Event on Saturday 7th November this year, start 1800hrs. We used to watch it from the island moorings when we were Hoveton moorers. Check other club websites.
  7. There was a thread about pizzas in boat ovens on a canal forum a few weeks ago. The concensus was that you need a pizza tray i.e. a round tray wirh small holes in the base, to get good results. Turning the item on the shelf halfway through was also considered beneficial. I'm not a pizza eater so cannot offer an epicurian opinion.

    Hathor

As Chris said, very well indeed. Externally she looked fine to a 'high standard' as we useed to say. Internally the panels had been refurbished. The inlays were found to be solid dyed through the wood and it was possible to reinstate the original colours prior to revarnishing. They did have fiddly job cutting new inlays for lost pieces.

    Hathor

We were at Barton House on Friday 14th on boat-building related business. Hathor was in the wet-dock along with Ardea. The wherry yachts were on the basin and riverside. Maud was moored at Stalham museum, and we saw Albion on the Bure and Ant earlier in the week, so almost a full house, only Solace missed. Peter said they were due to be on show for the weekend at Granary Staithe. We were fortunate enough to be shown over the interior refurbishment of Hathors interior.
  10. Certainly the signs on BA moorings state: In Emergency Phone 999 and ask for Coastguard. They know the locations and can initiate services as appropriate.
  11. If push comes to shove do what you have to do. Motor somewhere, Disturb other boats, Knock on house doors whatever you have to do. When I was still in poor health we carried a list of health centres, walk-in centres etc. Additionally we have made our own chart book for Grebe and have added to the charts the map references of all the BA moorings we have used - this means we can direct emergency help accurately.
  12. Thanks for the invitiation JM. After a long absence, 7 years or so, we are planning to bring the little red boat south in September. OB will certainly on the itinery but not a full tour of the south. Off on a cruse to Fjords before then, see you soon. Mal and Chris
  13. Fresh water filter is a good place to start. This will normally be before the water pump so it will not make the pump cycle. Shower leak 1 could it be water from the shower tray? Shower leak 2 have you got a separate shower discharge pump? some boats are built so the shower tray drains into the cabin bilge and it is then eventually discharged by the 'normal' bilge pump Condensation, no people equals no breathing out warm damp air, restricting condensation.
  14. You should also consider the load going the other way to recharge the battery. You may only draw a low demand over a long period but the charging circuit will push as much as it is rated at back into the battery. OK you have an outboard and I do not know how many amps they can produce. Perhaps check the spec for your motor and rating your cable against that would be better.
  15. We heard one a few years ago when we were walking in the nature reserve at Wood End. We also saw one in flight at the top of Barton Broad. Our friends saw one fly over the M18 near Doncaster a couple of years ago. Those Carr nature reserves are very broad-like.
  16. We used to be early to bed and early to rise and start. We always ensured that boats moored near to us were aware that this was our intention. Especially if we were off to catch an early flood tide through Yarmouth at 0700hrs and are at St Olaves or beyond.
  17. ...when a couple of years ago a young lady offered me a seat on the underground. I was only 60 at the time. p.s. I remember most of the extensive list the others have offered.
  18. We did every Christmas afloat from 1999 to 2007. We've had some magical times on quiet rivers. It was always the time to winterise the boat at the end of the Christmas outing. Now we have a land base in Broadland we still try to get out if we can. Having said that, Grebe has not been out since May. We will have to see a forecast before contemplating taking the covers off and coming out for a short trip. Mal
  19. After lurking as an occassional visitor for years I wanted to post on the First Time... thread, so I joined. I've been a member and poster next door for years, so many of you will know me already. As my other post said, I've been coming boating since 1986 and our boat has been here since 1999. We moor at Stalham. This year has been a wash-out for me due to health problems but now I'm sorted and 2015 had better be ready. Mal
  20. September 1986. A Calypso from Blue Line at Horning. We did a lot in the week. Having sold our narrowboat we went off boating on waterways we could not get to, or didn't have the time available to get to them via the inland network. But it was the Broads that hooked us. Back again on and off until 1999 when we brought our new boat here and have been Broads based for 15 years.
