  1. Well, we went to the funeral today and thankfully it was the right day and the right funeral As always there were moments of sadness for the loss of the person remembered. and moments of pleasure from the shared memories of that person too. At the end of the day it was what it was, a fairly typical situation for people of our age group. Another one of us shuffled off the mortal coil. Carole
  2. This reminds me of a story told to us by a berth holder close to us in Brundall. Apparently he'd got pulled by a Ranger for speeding and given a ticket which he accepted graciously until the Ranger left which he did apparently at top speed. the receiver of the ticket was not amused and went after him. On catching up with him he called out to him "Oi, what's good for the goose is good for the gander, Here's your ticket - Stick it!" he never heard anything more about it. Carole
  3. Well today didn't go as we thought it would. We were due to attend the funeral of Tony's cousin . We drove to the crematorium in Peterborough and having parked the car, looking round we failed to recognise any one else. So a discreet enquiry of the undertaker who had just arrived with the hearse, revealed wrong funeral! A quick call to the widow confirmed that she had given us rhe wrong day, when we spoke to her yesterday confirming details. At least we didn't find out after we had sat through the service! So tomorrow will see us setting off once more. I'm just grateful that Tony was with me when I made the call to confirm details and that I'd had the phone on speaker otherwise nothing would have coinvinced him that I hadn't made the cockup and I'd never have heard the last of it. Carole
  4. We're very much hoping that it will have a similar menu to the Yare. We've really missed the Yare, we've tried the Ram a couple of times and whereas the food was o.k We weren't comfortable in the atmosphere. It is very much a drinkers' pub and could get very loud and raucus, people bawling and shouting at the top of their voice sitting just a few feet away is not really what you want while trying to enjoy a meal. We've been using the Shoulder of Mutton. The food is very good with a very varied menu but charging over £8.00 for a glass of not particularly special wine we feel is a bit much. I'm hopng that the White Heron doesn't resort to the usual pub fare as is served at the 2 pubs adjacent to Broadands which I dislike immensely. You couldn't pay me to eat ribs smothered in bar-b cue sauce, although I quit enjoy the occasional burger, but not with chips that have the texture of wet cardboard and zero flavour. Carole
  5. When I was a child we had a golden Springer Spaniel named Skipper who we got as a rescue dog. He was in very poor condition when we acquired him needing eye surgery and with galloping mange. He used to sit in his basket looking such a pathetic sight that the cat used to stalk past him pausing to eye him with total contempt. However after careful nursing by my mum he grew into a magnificent dog. I found I could get away with murder as there was no question of me ever getting a clip round the ear for naughtiness as he would have killed anyone who even looked as if they posed a threat to me. He had a quirk that if anyone came into the house uninvited he would let them in passively but woe betide them if they atttempted to leave! My parents decided to find him a new home after 2-3 years as he hated to be left and we were all out all day and he was slowly eating his way through all the doors in the house. So he went to live in a pub where the landlady absolutely adored him and he lived the life of O'Reilly, with someone employed to walk him daily and a diet of best steak. He caught and detained 2 burglars while he was there, again giving no indication of his presence till they tried to leave with their "Swag". Carole
  6. Booked into our surgery tomorrow for a Covid No. 4 and flu jab. We kept getting e mails and post telling us to book on line but each appointment offered when doing that was for somewhere miles away, so Tony Phoned the surgery today - result! Carole
  7. Reading this thread demonstrates how differently people!e react to situations. We were moored outside Coldham Hall in our previous boat, Hot Gossip.A Hire boat came past from our stern and moored in front of us. All four of the occupants came up to us full of abject apologies we were bemused until they explained that they had touched the large ball fender just behind our bow. They were mortified,we hadn't even realised. We explained that their concern wasn't necessary as the fender had done it's job so no harm done. But we were very impressed by the respect they obviously had for our boat. Carole
  8. I dislike this time of the year immensely, September being my least favourite month. While I agree about the extremes of heat we had last summer, too full on for the most ardent of sun worshippers, and certainly it is easier to deal with being too cold rather than too hot even so give me Summer every time. Carole
  9. We used Raffles's cage as part of "his"world putting his bed, toys etc inside so that he went in and out of it all the time at his own volition. It was never an issue for him and he was never anxious about it. Without the cage he would probably have done himself a serious harm as he ate his way through the house! Carole
  10. A cage was essential when we had Raffles an English setter who lived up to his name,an elegant impeccably bred gentleman thief! Being long legged, little was inaccessible to him and he once consumed a China elephant that he had helped himself to from the mantelpiece. A small corner of the ear was all that remained. He once had to have surgery to remove a foreign body from his stomach, I am sure he thought he was a goat. Carole
  11. We also need 8'3" and always phone the yacht station before setting out across Breydon Water to be on the safe side. Carole
  12. We felt the need to get up and put the heating on during Monday night hence the decision to go home. Carole
  13. As said our intention was to go where the mood( or the weather) took us. Well it took us home! We didn't fancy cruising anywhere in the rain. the marina was like the Marie Celeste - totally deserted. In other words it was no fun at all and too cold to be relaxing either. We wait in hope that temperatures will be user friendly again before too long. Carole
  14. It bucketed down last night.Window dry this morning! Result! Carole
  15. It absolutely hammered down here in Brundall last night and as expected some water ingress below the offending window. A thorough inspection of all windows externally this morning revealed a blocked channel on that particular window. Tony is hoping that having given it a thorough clean out, we will have no further problem. We can but hope. Carole
  16. Sometime back in the 90s a group of girl hirers managed to sink a fairly large boat outside what was in those days the Cambridge rowing team boat house on the RGO on the main drag through Ely. They had apparently tried to turn round backing up to the corner of the wall that flanked the slipway Because the water was exceptionally high they were unable to see the acute angle which was submerged. A massive hole the size of a dinnerplate was punched into the stern, and she went down pretty quickly. The story went that one of the girls was trapped in the v berth and had the presence of mind to kick out the front screen and escape. Once the boat was resting on the bottom they apparently gathered all their belongings and promptly went home. Their car was only a few minutes walk away as the hire yard was just a few hundred yards upstream from where they sank. We watched the refloating the next morning, fascinating. Carole
  17. Came to the boat this morning after a couple of weeks at home and found we had one of those most irritating things - A leaky window! Tony really doesn't " do " water where it shouldn't be and is on the case big time! I feel a shipping load of Creeping Crack coming on! Fortunately we came without a particular agenda. Just go where the mood (or the weather) takes us. Just as well because experience tells me any plans we may have had would now be firmly on the back burner and that top on the agenda will now be curing that pesky leak. Carole

    Swag

We were looking after my daughter's elderly shia tsu. One afternoon she was in the saloon and suddenly decided to relocate up to the cockpit, hurtled up the stairs, rebounding off the closed glass door did a very agile mid air twist and landed back in the saloon neatly on her feet looking very confused. Swag

My daughter used to have 2 cats, Pilchard a rather serious natured female and Benjamin a ginger bundle of mischief. One morning my daughter was in her study having just unpacked a newly arrived carton of stock. Pilchard seeing the empty box, did what is typical of cats and promptly jumped in. Seeing her do so Benji immediately flipped the lid back on and sat on it to Pilchard's fury. Apparently her efforts to dislodge him and get out were hilarious. I just wish I'd seen it. Carole
  20. I agree the king did look exhausted, likewise the queen consort who looked to be beset with nerves. After the punishing schedule they had both endured in recent days it was hardly surprising. I doubt they have had a single relaxed moment since the Queen's passing. I couldn't maintain the stamina to do half of what they have done. My admiration knows no bounds. Carole
  21. I felt very sorry for Liz Truss. Just in the job at a really difficult time and not having the immense experience of the Queen to help guide her, but I think from king Charles she will have all the wise guidance she may need. He has learnt a huge amount while in the wings I am sure. Carole
  22. I really believe that with king Charles 3rd at the helm we are in safe hands. I thought his speech in both content and in delivery was faultless. This is man who has been systematically underestimated all his life. Those who do so now do so at their peril. Carole
  23. We're beyond sad and feel cast adrift. I remember the day she became our queen very well. I was a very small child and recall being seen across the road by a neighbour with whom I had been with the instruction to "tell your mummy the king has died". I thionk in Charles we will have a good king if they just give him a chance and also Camilla will do a first rate job as consort I have no doubt. Carole
  24. The situation in Ely wasn't helped by the local authorityy refusing to give either party right of way. Carole
  25. I must say that we have found the fishermen on the Broads to be very much more pleasant than those on the RGO. There they were very aggressive and it wasn't unknown to have a catapult full of maggots aimed at your cockpit! Carole
