  1. I had a go at reading it. It's easier if you imagine Sir Humphrey speaking it.
  2. I have been in contact with NRO and they have confirmed there are 30 pages in the registration document file. Does anyone know what kind of information is likely to be held in these pages?
  3. OK I'll take the bait, where is this? Only Andy Seedhouse would call it tidy.
  4. It's nice and clean too. The fridge I had off you is perfect!
  5. 42ft isn't it? Come August you may be known as Mr Sheen!
  6. I have a Hotpoint Creda Cucina in the Denham Owl. It's the 50cm version and to be honest, it's a bit big for the galley but hey ho, it came with the boat. I looked at a smaller one OBB was selling and that's when I noticed the screwed down burner tops. The previous owner used one of those extended gas lighters for ignition so I was careful how I told her it just needed a single AA battery in the compartment underneath the oven door and it works via a button! Rust can be a problem with the changing atmosphere of a boat; the underside of the burner tops can drop rust flakes into the jets if not cleaned on a regular basis.
  7. I've never seen a Taylor's before, looks like a nice piece of engineering from the pics. Just a note on domestic cookers: the tops of the burners are not screwed down like those for boats/caravans/campavans etc. Should be fine on inland waters I would think until a heavy impact. Tim & Pru probably have everything screwed down on that basis.
  8. Personally, I would like to see the polaroids! I'm sure they will be fine as long as they have been inside a container and exposed to changes in atmosphere. When you get to them, before you open the boxes or whatever they are contained in, clean any dust/muck away thoroughly from the outside before opening as it's amazing how slides and negatives act as a magnet for it.
  9. I know little of France and even less of boating in France but American management..... The US brought us all great improvements in customer service, but to the point of obsession. I have experience of this from when Wal-Mart took over Asda. True they probably run it all from the states but they will employ young, bubbly people locally to carry out the donkey work, teaching them sayings like, "respect for the individual" and "always greet anyone who comes within 6 feet of you". In French of course. These people's total knowledge of boating may well have gained by company training programs which involve showing them pictures of boats. Just a wild guess of course. Avay voo une nice day.
  10. As MM has demonstrated (I seem to be agreeing with him a lot all of a sudden??) it's a good idea to stop and think before hitting post/send/reply. In this case I think it's quite clear and should have been common knowledge that this kind of thread is going to spoil someone's day, even though in only a relatively small way. I don't think the arguments of hot news/freedom of speech etc over ride the simple matter of respect for others; helping them to have a decent day without let downs. It isn't difficult.
  11. Ok, freedom of expression and all that but as this kind of thread always gets the same reaction, why not leave it until after the race has finished when everyone will be more than happy to join in? It's just pointless IMHO.
  12. I was thinking the same thing, and are they the same hieght when the lifting handle is extended? Judging by the photo alone, they look like they may actually fit in the same space?? Edit: Apart from the extended handle of course.
  13. That sounds like a diesel locomotive.
  14. Suggestion for Christmas: Have it in February. Everyone can make it. Presents from the £1 shop and have to be silly. Worked for us one year when Father in law had flu over Christmas.
  15. Well well well, you just never know do you? This being a Broads boat with evidence of self-steering gear having been fitted, I assumed she was converted for sea use later in life but not so. I've found her in the records at the Norfolk Records Office. She was registered from new as Part 1 for use at sea. To confirm Robert's suspicion the registration document states her name as, "Gipsy 3 - Horning (subsequently Denham Owl)" I've only just found the file but I will be ordering copies when I've fathomed out the procedure for doing so and reporting back here. The normal Thornycroft engine for these was the O.E.138 but this has the slightly bigger O.E.160. Again, I had presumed this was a replacement but maybe it was part of the original spec? I would love to know how the hot water was heated after what I've been through! The 1988 change of ownership would have been when Mr Callan sold it on. This was about a year after he married Michelle Dotrice so maybe she didn't like boats or they bought another one. Denham Owl may have had memories he wanted to forget after using it as a bolt-hole during a messy divorce.
  16. My understanding is that originally marine ply had better, waterproof resin than ordinary ply until it became economical to use the better resin for all. Then it came down to the voids where marine ply isn't supposed top have any. As Griff says go for exterior grade but I would add, try and stay clear of B&Q or Wickes. I used some B&Q ply, sealed it with all sorts and it lasted less than 6 months before delaminating. I reckon it was damp and I just sealed it in!
  17. Thanks Stumpy, great answer. Unfortunately, it begs more questions! I'll have a browse of Google and come back. May even learn to spell confidentiality.
  18. I get where you're coming from MM. The term "mental health" and "mental health issues" have become two of those over used "trump cards" that it has become very difficult to question. If someone says they have mental health issues is it ok to ask them to be more specific? Would it be ok to ask if they have seen a doctor about it? A young person on a news article about affordable homes said that not being able to buy a home was affecting their mental health. Maybe we should stop using the overall term and go back to reffering to indivdual issues. We didn't have "mental health issues" back in 1992, is it possible to claim retrospectively?
  19. Robert has prompted me to go through all the paperwork I have relating to the history of the Denham Owl and I have come accross this receipt. Could someone tell me what this means please? I have deleted the name due to modern confidetiality rules but it is not E. Woodward! She would have been down on the Thames I believe in 1988 if that means anything. I also have a Ship Radio Licence for 1999 to 2000 but that was issued in Ambleside! Thanks in anticipation.
  20. I've just checked the paperwork and the hull survey was done at Shepperton on 17 October 2017. She would have been lifted there shortly after.
  21. At the last election nobody of any political persuasion voted for their MP on the basis of their ability to handle a pandemic. At the next election it will be all over and the same should apply as there will be different issues to address. Anyone voting retrospectively because of this... well, I'd be banned if I said it!
  22. Robert, Yes I have seen that old advert but looking at it again and I notice it's you who asks if it is still for sale. I wonder if you had a reply? In the advert the mast is complete, there is a tender with outboard and the cover is valued at £1,800. Seems to be in Windsor Racecourse Marina. My understanding is that it was sold on to someone before being sold again on 10 October 2017 to the lady I bought it from. In that short space of time the tender and outboard went elsewhere, the cover was said to be worth £6,000, someone took a saw to the mast and the purchase price went up by £5K! In your first post here you don't say which marina the Owl is close to; my understand was that she was shipped from Shepperton. There was another website where the Denham Owl was being offered as an air B&B on the Thames for the Royal Wedding of Harry and Megan, even though it was moored at Bowling on the Forth & Clyde at the time! I would love to see the pics if you find them, thanks for looking.
  23. Predictable there would be a thread for this. Leicester went into lock down first and what happened? Did it make everyone else think they should tighten up their defences against covid? No. Everyone had parties. The BBC carried on propagating the message that it was all very confusing and the infection rate went up. So the regional thing didn't work and it was confusing (mostly because it was cool to say so; you could say so without being thought of as being thick). Not confusing anymore is it? We brought it on ourselves. I'm in tier 3 btw and someone has to be near a border. BBC kindly showed a reporter standing by the Kent border saying this pub can open and that cant. Oh please. Stand by a speed limit sign and for two yards either side there's no justification for the difference.
  24. The guy at the front thinks he's in a Mars advert - helps you work, rest and play. Nice pic.
